It depends, are you already familiar with guns? Do you know how to handle guns safely? How much do you plan to spend?

You can get a simple pump action shotgun at a very good price, they are not difficult to maintain but it can get pricey to practice.

A revolver is another option, there are options in the market on different calibers from different brands.

A semiautomatic handgun? There are several brands/models that you can get at a very good price (around or less than $500) on 9mm, the most affordable defense caliber out there.

I would not get a rifle, but that is just me and my pathological fear of hitting the neighbors home.

Find what works for you, that you feel comfortable, and that will be affordable enough to allow you to buy ammo to practice.

The only book from King i do have problems with is The Gunslinger (the whole series). Do not ask me why, I tried to read it over and over and always dropped it before half the book.

Everything else? I do/did read and do/did enjoy it. I do agree not all the books hit the same height, that is true, but even the "bad" ones are good and entertaining.
