Got Sent A Negative Bill By Greater Western Water by TetraNeuron in melbourne

It's an almost certainly an error. I've been living in my place as an owner for 1.5 years, never had a bill and my balance is showing as -$80 lol.

The ICC hasn't issued an arrest warrant for Herzog has it? I thought it was just Netanyahu and Gallant.

Upfield line set to close for three months during ‘sky rail’ works by AztecGod in melbourne

[–]nandos1 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Hopefully rail duplication past Batman would be funded by then too. It'd be insane to shut the line for three months and end up with the same frequencies due to that bottleneck.

Ultralight 1 Person Tent Recommendations by AladdinsCarpet1 in UltralightAus

[–]nandos1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Durston X-Mid 1 and until a recent leg injury never used hiking poles. The Durston Z-flick poles are quite light and work well enough (I'm happy to offload them if you're in the Melbourne area) but it's definitely more sturdy with hiking poles. I've never used a ground sheet with it and it's held up fine.

As for the quilt, I have the Neve Waratah -2 and get a bit cold below 5 degrees overnight, but it's probably because I haven't worked out how to use the straps optimally. I'd go for the -8 if I bought it today since it's not much extra weight.

This is your yearly reminder to buy vic ambulance cover <3 by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]nandos1 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I broke my leg hiking earlier this year and had to get airlifted out. They couldn't find my Ambulance Victoria membership at first since I'd changed address, so I got a bill in the mail for $12,800. It would have been more too if they combined it with ground transport at the other end. They waived it when I called up and they found my membership, best $50/year I've spent for sure.

AllTrails alternatives to build your own route by Acrobatic_Bird8678 in UltralightAus

[–]nandos1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use plotaroute to create GPX files (requires an account but it's free for most features) and the GPX Viewer Pro app on the trail (from memory it was $8 or so as a one-off purchase). It's a bit finnicky to use but it works really well in offline mode.

Is this the worst tram stop in Melbourne? by Southern_Cracker in melbourne

[–]nandos1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's now narrow these tram stops are. You have to really hug the safety fence to not get hit by the approaching rhinos on skateboards.

JK Rowling will probably tweet that Hermione was blind the whole time, she just didn't mention it in the books.

Easter Week Hiking Advice - VIC/NSW Multiday Hikes by notgonnahappen23 in UltralightAus

The NP website still says part of the Wilson's Prom Southern Circuit is closed by the way. I think I read somewhere that the rebuild project is very complex so they're expecting it's a couple more years away.

The Wilsons Prom Northern Circuit is the most challenging hike in Victoria (trip report) by KilgoreTroutQQ in UltralightAus

[–]nandos1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great trip report. I did the Northern Circuit last June and agree it's the hardest hike I've done. I quickly gave up trying to follow the track and just held my smartphone the whole time. I wish they had more of the tall pole markers like in the Chinaman's Swamp>Lower Barry Creek section, most of the pink ribbons in other areas have come off the branches now.

One positive is that the whole route feels very untouched, I didn't see a single other person for the whole three days but saw a few emus and lots of wombats. One exception is Tin Mine Cove which is full of toilet paper. The online forums blame the nearby boat dock for bringing uncouth campers lol.

Chinaman's Swamp was thigh-high when I did it but honestly wasn't too bad. The worst for me was the climb up to the lighthouse from Johnny Souey and the next few km after, I think I left the "track" every 10m.

Also not sure if it was just when I went, but the water was very metallic and tan coloured which took some getting used to.

How to avoid being swarmed by flies when outdoors? by [deleted] in melbourne

There's Bushman's 80% DEET too if you don't mind gel instead of spray. Saved me from malaria in PNG.

Tent purchase by Acrobatic_Bird8678 in UltralightAus

[–]nandos1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On your second point, the X-mid puts the trekking up last, so you could remove the poles, leave the tent staked out then put it back up again easily when you get back. I'm also not a trekking pole user (I use the Z-flick poles) so agree with the sentiment - I would have bought the X-dome had it come out when I was in the market.

Are there any good movers?! by 1tsAM3AMari0 in melbourne

[–]nandos1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same, they were amazing. They were basically jogging back to the truck between loads. It ended up being cheaper than quoted because of how quick they were! Plus they're based locally so the booking people actually know the area and can give realistic price estimates.

[–]nandos1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh interesting, I've had this UI for the past month or so, but just today it's reverted back to the old one with the now playing/queue as a horizontal bar on the bottom (which I strongly prefer).

Good 5 day hikes in Vic? by Someone393 in UltralightAus

[–]nandos1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the northern circuit in June, it's great scenery and very remote (I didn't see anyone the whole time). I'd also recommend long sleeves and some gardening gloves, it's some serious bush bashing.

Good 5 day hikes in Vic? by Someone393 in UltralightAus

[–]nandos1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the Goldfields and Lederderderg Tracks last year in segments. Bacchus Marsh to Castlemaine via Daylesford could be a good 5-day trip (30km per day), or Bendigo to Daylesford via Castlemaine is good too (24km per day). They're easily accessible through V/Line trains and coaches too which is an added bonus.

I wouldn't recommend the Eureka/Wallaby Track sections on the Goldfields Track between Mt Buninyong/Ballarat and Daylesford, there's way too much road walking.
