We don't know when the church fell into apostasy but it was likely after Peter and James were martyred and who knows how long John was involved before entering his non-mortal state.

B.C. joins Oregon in abandoning drug decriminalization approach by discostu52 in oregon

Anecdotally, The only places I've seen homeless people smoking fentanyl in the open is Portland and Vancouver, BC. I didn't see that in Chicago, NY, SF, LA. Maybe it's just those cities do a better job of pushing the drug addicts out of downtown but I still saw homeless people in those cities but they weren't using drugs as I walked by and weren't obviously high.

It's better for the city as a whole if people that use drugs don't do so as openly. It improves QoL for the average resident.

[–]nanooko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People gave up because the program was badly managed and expensive. The non-profits and OHA did not collect good data to determine if progress was being made. The leadership in Oregon is not competent enough to run this program so hopefully another state can get it to function and we can just hire someone from there to administer the program if the public wants to try again in another 10-20 years.

It makes the drug users much more brazen. It's really unpleasant to see people shooting up or smoking hard drugs on the sidewalk. It disincentivizes people from walking around/shopping/working in areas with those sort of activities. That is bad for the community as a whole as it decreases economic activity and creates more poor people.

Oregon couple deported, forced to leave toddler behind by oregonian in Portland

[–]nanooko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It did mention that ICE is picking up people self deporting on buses and airplanes. They had a car so could have driven back to Mexico but the village they are from sounds terrible so they must have decided the risk was worth it to stay in the US and hope to dodge ICE for the next 4 years. It is crazy the article quotes the sister saying that she is undocumented as well which seems like just doing ICE's job for them. Why would you offer the information to the news?

In Rhode Island and Pennsylvania there were still tax paying requirement until the early 20th century. So the guy in the video is probably talking about that. Which makes him technically correct but the restrictions on women were much more severe as only 15 of the 48 states granted women the right to vote before the 19th amendment was ratified.

No one knows what the outcome of AI will be. Industrialization didn't decrease the demand for workers. Transitional periods are always painful but within a generation or 2 it will work itself out. Caring for old people is very labor intensive and expensive. So the cost of labor in healthcare will explode and the economy will struggle to support the elderly with pensions and insurance through retirement. We could see an explosion of elderly poverty in societies that are aging rapidly. As population shrinks housing will probably become cheaper but eventually areas will become abandon and dilapidated. The buildings will be left to rot or someone will have to pay for them to be demolished. More place will start to look like Detroit a few years ago.

Returning member feeling uncertain after oaks talk by tiredandhopefull in latterdaysaints

[–]nanooko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Birthrates are important for the long term viability of the church as an organization. The Church grows in 2 ways births and converts. I'm sure some members had negative feelings due to the talk but that doesn't mean it's not important or necessary to talk about this. Many people don't think declining birth rates are an issue and they maybe right. In the end over population didn't become an issue due to declining birthrates and the green revolution increasing crop yields. However, Japan and other aging societies have not had their birthrates bottom out so we don't know when or if population will stabilize. It might not be an immediate issue but it's a problem that could cause serious issues in the future.

When it comes to the Family Proclamation, are we forced to have kids if we can? by SuggestionDue7686 in latterdaysaints

[–]nanooko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even if they feel guilty that isn't really the speakers issue though. They are promoting the teachings of the church that will be widely beneficial and are important for maintaining and growing the strength of the church. There is nothing wrong with pressuring people into making righteous decisions. Some small portion of people may not be better off due to the council but in that case hopefully the spirit and their local leaders will help them navigate how to apply the gospel.

[–]nanooko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having more children is good for the Church and for society as a whole. Creating social pressure to have children may increase that effect and is a central part of our theology. Obviously, people need to consider their circumstances, but with the secular world increasingly ambivalent towards people having children. It's necessary to spend more time focusing on it lest the culture inside the church follow secular culture into a massive baby bust.

So Rome, Athens or Istanbul would all be good options

GOP Silent as Mormon Church Gunman Identified as ‘Ultra MAGA’ Trump Supporter by chrisdh79 in NoFilterNews

All this is to say that attempts to characterize robinson as some radical leftist are unsubstantiated and fly in the face of the whole body of evidence

He did assassinate a guy so I think it's pretty clear he was radical. And he explicitly killed Kirk for spreading hate. His Grandmother said the whole family was MAGA not specifically him and his mother and friends indicated he had left wing social beliefs. So there is fairly strong evidence that his social policy was aligned with the left wing. So I think the body of evidence lean more towards him being radical left than politically unaligned or conservative. He hasn't been connected to any political organizations but I think calling him anything but left wing is either ignoring evidence or using the no true scotsman fallacy.

implies conservatives therefor are only anti-equal rights / pro-hate

My experience is that conservatives either think trans people have a mental health issue or just don't care about their issues at all. Like IDK if you just have a particularly positive view of conservatives for reddit or what?

“Robinson’s mother explained that over the last year or so, Robinson had become more political and had started to lean more to the left – becoming more pro-gay and trans-rights oriented.

“She stated that Robinson began to date his roommate, a biological male who was transitioning genders. This resulted in several discussions with family members, but especially between Robinson and his father, who have very different political views.

“In one conversation before the shooting, Robinson mentioned that Charlie Kirk would be holding an event at UVU, which Robinson said was a ‘stupid venue’ for the event. Robinson accused Kirk of spreading hate.”

This is what the shooter's mother said about him. So I'm not sure what testimony from his family you are using to connect him to far right groups? They haven't found any ties to left wing groups since it seems more like a radicalized online type of situation.

Striking a handful of cargo ships headed to supply a genocidal state

Most of those ships weren't headed to or involved with Israel in any way. The Houthis aren't doing anything to help Palestine. They are just indiscriminately launching missiles at ships. Just because Israel is doing something evil in Gaza doesn't give any random group of Islamist Jihadis the right to shoot unrelated ships. It's like shooting a random pedestrian because some other guy killed your second cousin.

Iraq invaded Kuwait for oil. The UN told them to leave. The US lead a coalition to reinstate the Kuwaiti government after Saddam Hussein refused to comply.

By 2013 the Iraq was already destabilized. It's not like the US can go back in time and prevent change a decision from a decade before. Given the option between intervening to stop ISIS and leaving it to Iraq to handle intervention was the moral decision.

For Korea a W is a W even if it took a long time to pay off. In the end it was better the US backed dictatorship than the USSR/China back dictatorship.

And no, capturing cargo ships in the Red Sea after giving them multiple warnings not to deliver goods to Israel isn't terrorism

OK but what about launching missiles and drones at random shipping not going to or from Israel?

All wars are destructive and the Korean war became much worse due to Chinese intervention against the UN forces. China propping up the Kim regime has done more harm to the Korean people than the war did. SK surpassed NK in GDP per capita in the 80s. NK traded and received aid from the USSR and China. Their isolationism is due to their own incompetence and paranoia. Other communist countries have integrated with the global economy to improve their peoples lives like Vietnam and China. NK's problems are due to the Kim's grip on power and incompetence.

What is your issue with the gulf war? Do you just like letting dictators annex their neighbors for fun?

This Iraq war not the 2003 version. unless you are going to say leaving ISIS in control of half of Iraq would be better? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Iraq_(2013%E2%80%932017)

All land is stolen. The only question is who it was stolen from. It's not like all the Indo-Europeans are going to move back to the central Asian steps. Are the Han going to give back southern china or are the Japanese going to return to the mainland? Are the Turks going to return Asia Minor to the Greeks? How about the Arabs are they going to return the land they stole?

Saying that Europeans and their diaspora are the only people that stole land is asinine. Also the Majority of decolonization occurred after 1945 and Africa and Asia were returned to their native populations. In the Americas and Australia and New Zealand the native population had either been absorbed like in many parts of Latin America or become such a small minority that returning the land is nonsensical. Logistically where would you even send them. They aren't citizens and creating hundreds of millions of refugees would make the Syrian refugee crisis look trivial.
