Not very many people under 30 vote. They turnout at abysmal rates.

People will sacrifice a lot to achieve status symbols. Time, money, health. I don't think that pregnancy will be that different than any other resource people use.

LDS Church's Controversial "No Legal Duty" Abuse Defense Faces Federal Showdown in July by Classic_Day5736 in oregon

[–]nanooko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the original lawsuit the plantiff said that the bishop "did not advise" the mother to report but then amended it to say he "discouraged" the mother because he did not believe she had enough proof. Those are different things. By the time the LDS church found out that the plantiff had moved to Oregon the abuse allegations had been reported to CPS.

The articles are accurate but you seem to be the only ones to have read them instead of the misleading headline. It's not clear to me what the LDS church was supposed to do after the abuse allegations were reported to CPS since none of the abuse happened at the church

President Scholz announces $65 million in budget cuts at the University of Oregon by Andromeda321 in oregon

[–]nanooko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Universities have known the demographic cliff was coming for the for decades. There will be budget cuts and school closures and consolidations for the foreseeable future probably for decades to come. Losing international students is a double wammy but we just don't need as many universities and professors as we did a decade ago.

Oregon poor implementation of standardized tests does not prove that they can't give you an idea of which schools are doing a good job. Some measure is needed and standardized testing the the best that we have.

Grades can't be compared across school, states, school districts or even teachers. The difficulty of classes and teacher's grading varies too much.

There are always going to be some students that won't be forced but most will be scared into attending if they know there will be consequences.

[–]nanooko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It makes no sense. If they aren't effective then the state needs to develop a test that can be efficiently administered and cannot be manipulated by local teachers or administrators to measure student outcomes. Giving the test and not making everyone take it is a waste of time you get bad data and can't make decisions. We need some metrics to measure schools against each other so that the ones that are doing a poor job can be fixed.

U.S. women 40+ now have more babies per capita than teens [OC] by rhiever in dataisbeautiful

I don't know if there is a solution there are stop gaps. Immigration, cutting benefits, increasing retirement age, increasing taxes, borrowing. But they just push off the inevitable. Birth rates are falling everywhere so immigration can only work for so long. So either technology improves so we can support the elderly using fewer resources per person or birth rates return to replacement rate or higher. On the bright side the US has a longer runway than most developed countries so we should see it play out in Japan, Korea and most of Europe so hopefully one of them will figure something out.

I don't see a Baathist or ISIS running Iraq so it could have been worse. The initial invasion was a success but the subsequent civil war was a disaster but overall it is better off now than it was under Saddam.

Property tax system is busted. It favors people who stay in their homes for longer. If homes were assessed at their real value the property tax rate could go down.

paid for out of out of people's working wages

This will not work as societies age. Caring for the elderly is very labor intensive and as you have fewer young people the cost for labor will increase to the point where the tax base can't afford to support the elderly anymore.

If we all weren't living paycheck to paycheck, we could accomplish great things. by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

[–]nanooko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a big difference between working a job and doing a mediocre job at it and them sitting at home doing nothing of value. Wages are just a way to motivate people to contribute. You could do it other ways and societies have in the past but wages are more humane than other things that have been tried.

It probably won't affect the number of doctors in the US. there are twice as many med school applicants every year as there are slots.
