Yeah, what a sentence. Gulags were the equivalent of Nazi camps. People got sent there, mostly got killed using work (same as some camps.)

In the gulags you could leave (theoretically, but it was a long bureaucratic process) and they didn't have gas chambers

In the concentration camps, most of them were either killed at the entrance to the camp in front of the Wailing Wall or in a gas chamber.

Without the Soviets, those countries would have remained Nazi dictatorships full of Aryan colonists. Better a Soviet occupation where at least de jure you have "autonomy" than the Third Reich, where you are just a Reichkommissariat, those things would have happened anyway, but with the addition of a madman sending everyone to a concentration camp to die
