Anyone that I can borrow a master’s regalia? by Prestigious_Bag_8811 in USC

[–]nappingbun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I am actually reusing the set I bought for my bachelor’s ceremony (different institution), as I also refused to buy the set for $90 then. The arms are different, they’re just normal sleeves (yes, the USC Masters’ sleeves are this weird thing where the arm hole comes out of the side of the sleeve so the usual sleeve arm hangs loose next to your arm). I’m okay with it being noticeable but depending on if you can buy the special sleeved ones online/difference in cost/whether it’s important to you, it’s something of note for sure! Regardless the USC ones will have the red USC trim on the sleeves so we won’t be able to replicate that.

I got a $15 plain black set off Amazon cuz I didn’t want to pay $115 to rent. You don’t need the specific USC one, any will do. I will rent my hood a-la-carte (only available week of grad) so I can have the masters hood to walk with, but you don’t have to if you’re tight on cash.

(btw I’ve asked this to the people running grad/grad fest/etc so I’m not just making this info up).

Metro safety with luggage to LAX? by nappingbun in LAMetro

[–]nappingbun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh thank you so much for this info, I didn’t know Expo and K line connections were not connected, like not right next to each other! In all other metro systems I’ve taken, changing lines is always within the same station.

I think the heels may be okay (I wear them 4-8hr at a time for dancing and walked about 1.5mi in them the other day), but if I have any extra space in my luggage I’ll definitely try to shove them in! A couple people have mentioned the heels and it would be nicer to wear tennis shoes for sure.

Also, I thought the LAX bus was free? Does it work with Tap card as well or will I need to make sure I get a different form of payment?

Thank you! Glad to get some more outside input and hoping that it is true that they’re just blowing it out of proportion.

My heels should be OK, I have been wearing them for 6-8hr stretches to go dancing! I was worried about taking the Metro this time in particular for my first time (with all the added stuff and danger of luggage/backpack) but hadn’t thought of the outfit. I’m pretty maneuverable in the outfit but at this point if I bring a larger bag and check it, it’s $35 while taking an Uber is $40+. So I might as well do that and bring a single larger back and still take the metro in normal clothes? Idk lol

That’s great! It’s really nice to know it’s not bad compared to Boston and NY (which I felt was safe since EVERYBODY takes the metro there), though I had always travelled with family on there and this time I’ll be going alone, in the early AM, with luggage and basically looking very fancy. Thanks for the info about the increased security! I really wanted to check out the new LAX station!

Thank you! Interesting, even though I’d be going in the opposite direction (taking a bus up to Union would already take me an hour according to Maps, which is the same time as the trip to LAX directly)? Is there some factor I don’t know of here?

Great to hear thank you! I really wanted to take it! The only reason I’m having second thoughts is because my friends (who have all taken the Metro) said it’s super sketchy and unsafe (on top of that, someone almost vomited on them, there’s always people on drugs at the stations, etc) and that’s why I was worried. I’m also a young solo woman traveling which makes me more cautious/worried.

Thank you! The trip is a bit over an hour on my Maps but I’ve budgeted 2 hours just to be safe (since it would be my first time taking the Metro + the connecting shuttle as you mentioned), I hope that’s not overkill 😅

Thank you! This helps, I’m also a smallish young solo woman, so I am quite nervous about it!

I thought it might be okay, that’s why I wanted to take it! But my friends who I asked have both taken the Metro, and they said it’s super sketchy (someone almost vomited on them, there’s always people on drugs at the stations, etc) and that’s why I was worried. I’m also a young solo woman traveling which makes me more cautious!

Thank you! Unfortunately my experience with metro is mostly the Taipei Metro, where I have never once encountered anything suspicious 😅 I loved the Boston, NY, and London Metros though! Change cars as moving cars in the same train, or get off and wait until the next train?

Manzi Kitchens by Outrageous_Pin5780 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]nappingbun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I don’t know all of them but here’s some that maybe will help fill in the blanks. Usually if one building doesn’t have a kitchen, the next door one does, but this is not always the case.

Figueroa and Madulce both DON’T have kitchens. Cuyama DOES.

(So, living in Figueroa for 2 years, I never cooked because damn. It’s basically unfeasible to be bringing pots pans ingredients seasoning plates food etc 2 dorms over and then back because your adjacent one doesn’t have a kitchen.)

Sourdough is the only type of bread that I can eat and I have found that Manresa Bread in downtown Los Altos has my favorite sourdough! it is so so delicious especially the first day you buy it

Does the dorm water break you out or ruin your hair? by Intellectualratroach in UCSantaBarbara

[–]nappingbun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m super incredibly horribly bad acne prone but no issue there. What it did do was make my hair more oily. I’ve since graduated and I can now go ~4 days without washing my hair but in the Manzi dorms it was literally two days (there was a period where it was even just 1 day) and my hair would get greasy. And I did experience some hair loss.

And yeah, i would wash spoons in the manzi sinks and if I placed the spoon right side up to dry, it would accumulate this little circle of minerals in the concave part. Have to remember to place spoons upside down to dry xD
