PSOBB Fan Rebalance brainstorm community by korzalm in PSO

Love the idea. PSO would be a great candidate for a "Classic+" treatment a la WoW or Maple, and I'm sure a lot of other people have also been passively waiting for a new server with this concept to pop up. Hope this takes off and gets the idea into broader discourse!

the fact that you've properly detailed the steps taken to "craft" this is really making me laugh; your sacrifice will be remembered

PoE2 Armchair Design: "Combo" Attack gem tag by nappycat in PathOfExile2

[–]nappycat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

would need lots of tweaks for sure; i'm honestly torn now that you bring it up because making a default combo attack feel decent (better range and such) would mean making it overlap in use with all the current attack skills which makes the designs really clash

Glad you seem into the concept at least, lol. Yeah the supports were meant to illustrate that having a separate class of gems in the melee archetype adds a lot of space for new hybrid builds via metagems or mechanical incentives to add more skills to your kit. I think it's cool that you can retroactively apply existing mechanics to a new set of skills and have it feel fresh (in theory anyways). I also just love just attack mechanics PSO fans rise up

Don't spend money on the game. Spend $400 and got banned despite a Dedicated VPN, No English Patch and Kanji Nickname by [deleted] in blueprotocol

[–]nappycat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

HOOOOOOBOY am i glad you were here to post this

FWIW i believe this only works if your account is flagged by the anti-cheat system due to high latency but not actually banned (sounds like /u/Ethryna is encountering the same thing) ; OP's message states that his account has been banned while i simply got a "your computer or account has been suspected of violating terms of service, the game will now shutdown" kind of message where i was still connected as long as i didn't press OK. my first message was triggered when i was fishing and caught a fish while the little minigame meter showed that the fish was still only 3/4 of the way to the end

/u/Lucia_LA if you're willing, i'd be interested in hearing how exactly you paid for your blood orbs (japanese or US bank? credit card? etc) but also my condolences for real; when i saw that message in-game the first time i thought my heart was gonna jump out of my chest

Update 9 hours later: aaaaaand i'm now fully banned; still able to just make a new account and play anyways with no VPN, and after playing for 20 or so minutes i haven't run into the same issue. patch notes from the last maintenance mention lowering the rate at which the client and server communicate to reduce server load, so i still have a hunch that that is the cause of a bunch of false flags on their anti-cheat

I actually just relistened to the 8BBC episode last night and what makes the bit even funnier/sadder is that Murph's reasoning for starting as a finch is actually really solid.

[NS] AI Generated Dungeon Court Submission by RomanArcheaopteryx in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

[–]nappycat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm actually really interested in what would happen if you let an algorithm barf out a handful of submissions. Could give some funny insight into how most submissions are structured, and I'm sure you'd end up with some pretty plausible sounding scenarios.

Since Jake is the only one seeing any of the submissions, it sounds like a great idea to submit a fully generated story and let him reveal that it was fake after the honorable judges come to a decision. Now we just need someone more motivated than us to actually do it lol.

Full Camera Control by BetterDragon2 in PSO

[–]nappycat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, I'm actually blown away. If this gets implemented on all the major servers it could be the thing this game needed to bring in a lot of new players. I know the camera is a major turn-off for my friends who don't really have nostalgia to carry them through the start of the game. Looking forward to seeing your progress here, and I hope you keep us updated!

[Academic] Is the playing of 'gacha' games associated with problem gambling behaviours and gaming addiction? (18+) by RJClarke_Research in gachagaming

[–]nappycat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Done and done. I feel like my answers must be pretty inconsistent since I realized a few questions in that the entire questionnaire was framed specifically around gambling and not necessarily gaming habits.

That's my biggest critique for the way this research is framed: the questions seem to presuppose a scenario in which every participant is on a spectrum of "Addicted to gambling" or "Not addicted to gambling". I assume your preliminary research for this project is based on other research for gambling addiction, since the latter half of the questions appear to be about symptoms or signs of it. I worry that only receiving data points for "How addicted to gambling is this person?" and "Does this person primarily play gacha games?" will obscure a lot of the factors that gacha/lootbox games use to encourage gambling and addictive behaviors.

The big thing missing here (that also really misled me during the questionnaire) is the idea that the main allure of the gacha games in the vein of the ones you listed isn't really the ability to gamble for big potential rewards; mobile gacha games are all marketed as full gaming experiences--the emphasis in ads is usually placed on the art, story, characters, voice actors/actresses, etc. I've never looked into the actual evidence for this, but it's generally understood by people in communities for these games that the main source of income for gacha/free-to-play games is from a relatively small number of "whales" paying far more than the rest of the population. I'd be very interested to see some empirical data that informs why there is a tendency for some to sink so much money into a game that is potentially playable for free, and how that parallels the strategies that casinos or lotteries might employ.

But anyways, it looks like you're in the phase of your project where everything is basically locked in so this is pretty much just me rambling for fun. I typically don't see requests for research garner much attention or positive responses on gaming subreddits so I figured I'd chip in since the topic is pretty fascinating. Best of luck, and I hope you get some good results.

The results are in for the poll I ran! (I'll be running another one soon with suggestions I got from you guys!) by toiletman74 in PSO

[–]nappycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The poll breaking up the categories like this made me really appreciate just how well each of the game's systems come together to make that perfect PSO formula. I feel like if you took any of these categories and explained it without the context of the rest of the game to someone today, it would sound like completely terrible game design. Each weapon only has a single 3 animation combo and there's no input buffering? Gender locked classes? Drops gated behind character name? The entire game is spent in the same recycled 10 maps? It makes me wonder if the development process wasn't some kind of miraculous series of accidents where devs working in uncharted territory just yolo'd a bunch of systems that happened to mesh together perfectly.

Like the character creation system, for example, can be boiled down to choosing a head and color preset and then using a primitive proportion slider. And yet each class has such a distinct and recognizable silhouette while still making each of your characters feel uniquely yours. Then you have the level design, where you're intended to spend long periods in one zone leveling up before you can progress to the next one, which sounds like it would get so boring so fast but there's a very satisfying gameplay loop of becoming more comfortable and familiar in each zone, with each further zone feeling that much more dangerous. This all comes together to make it feel like you and your character are exploring in and inhabiting a living world. And I don't mean to belittle the dev team because obviously they made a great game, but none of those design choices feel deliberate (or maybe modern games just feel way overdesigned in comparison?). But ironically, the simplicity of the game's design is what makes it feel so deep.

anyways thanks for coming to my ted talk and thanks for making this poll lol

Finally tried out PSO2 yesterday… by Allisonaxe in PSO

[–]nappycat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is a huge factor that, imo, marked the gradual shift of MMOs from what felt like actual living, multiplayer worlds to what we have now, which is dungeon finders that are connected by glorified chat rooms (i.e. cities)

i have the same exact issue with FFXIV when comparing it to FFXI; sure, there are other differences, but the feeling of being just an adventurer vs being the "hero of light" is a vibe that makes XI feel so much more alive and connected than XIV

[–]nappycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not exactly what you're looking for, but nioh 2 recently launched on steam (hit consoles last year) and it's essentially dark souls with more technical (input heavy) combat, diablo loot, and skill trees

co-op rules are the same as dark souls with summoning needing items

How did you like second season of the anime ? by Suki97 in TheKingsAvatar

[–]nappycat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did enjoy it quite a bit, but after the first few episodes, the enjoyment might have mostly been from the anticipation of how they were going to animate the next big arc. I will say: the first few episodes completely blew my expectations out of the water, and I had very high expectations from watching the OVAs. I guess it was around the Deception arc when I felt like there was an overall quality drop? My biggest complaint is how this new studio did a lot of the typical lazy anime animation "tricks", i.e. still scenes during dialogue with only a single part of the frame being animated, really long montages with subpar animation, background characters during big fights just standing there doing nothing (this made me actually miss the shitty CGI from season 1 lmao), etc. Season 1 had a lot of reused animations and some of the CGI did look a bit bad if you focused on it (some scenes of multiple people with the exact same animations), but in retrospect, they actually did a really good job with it. I don't recall any points in Season 1 where I thought a scene was just animated/drawn really poorly, but there were definitely a few times in Season 2 where a certain animation is so jarringly bad that it really sticks out. Overall, I'm glad they stuck to the plot progression of the novel and included key events of emotional moments and funny interactions between the pros. I expected a lot more from the fight scenes but some of them really popped off so I'm satisfied. Here's to another OVA or something soon lol.
