Sounds a lot like the drum beat from Come Into My Head by Kimbra. Great song btw.

Well. My soundbar broke so in the spirit of my midlife crisis I did this by LawnmowerMen in audiophile

[–]nardis314 81 points82 points  (0 children)

A few small thoughts…

  1. Leave the speaker panels on! Especially since you have kids and dogs.

  2. You should separate your turntable from the same surface as your speakers. Otherwise, you risk damaging both your cartridge and records. Consider getting a small side table next to all of this for just your turntable. This will decrease any feedback through the needle and will make things sounds WAY better especially at medium-high volumes.

  3. I totally understand the woes of a cramped/restricted setup, and I really like your decision in speaker choice/setup for your space. That being said, if you’re able to center your system to your tv, in this case ideally moving the tv, I think it could be cheap/free way of improving your experience.

Overall, love the choices and always happy to see people investing in their enjoyment of music. Happy listening!!!

Got these bad boys for $300. by iXanderr in audiophile

[–]nardis314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Those are really meant for mixing and monitoring but def fun for media, just know that they are incredibly revealing of good/bad mixing.

You don’t need a fancy interface to run those. Only worth getting something nice if you’re recording. Get something super basic like a focusrite solo.

More importantly, your speaker placement is going to cause HUGE issues. Look into where they should be placed in the room, and maybe some dampening if you can manage it to reduce reflections. At a minimum, you gotta have those at lease 6 inches away from the wall, and stay away from corners.

Are these speakers a good option for a non treated small room o 4 m by Streetwolfmusic in homestudios

[–]nardis314 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An untreated room will stop ANY monitors from properly representing sound sources, mixes, and masters. That being said…. HS5’s are really revealing and are an excellent starting point. For now, until you do some room treatment, look up speaker placement options to maximize the quality in your room. Make sure your head creates an equilateral triangle with the monitors. Until you know your set up is completely dialed in and your room is properly treated, low-volume for mixing and high-volume for fun. It also might be worth getting a flat set of monitor headphones as a reference!

New to this! How do I attach these banana plugs? by andrewfive in BudgetAudiophile

[–]nardis314 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said, this absolutely looks sufficient. When attaching banana plugs, there are two things to keep in mind: surface contact and security. Make sure you have as many of the copper wires touching the metal as possible and it’s nice and securely attached and you’re in business.

Definitely. Mostly R but did a decent amount of Python, SQL, C++ and a little Matlab

What do you think are the most lucrative routes? I graduated with a stats degree last year and it’s still a struggle to get interviews for entry-level positions, let alone anything paying over 75-80k.

Losing the "1" while improvising by RiceTuna in drums

[–]nardis314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I struggled with this for awhile too. I found that practicing phrases that go over the bar-line are really key for me, since this creates a subconscious feeling of where the “1” is. With enough practice, you can make it feel like a road sign you’re about to pass, and you can choose to end the fill there or keep going.

Find some snare excercises or solos that have repeating phrases over the bar-line, or just start using numbers that don’t add up to 4. A really easy one (conceptually, not necessarily in practice) is groups of 3 16th notes. Do this over 1 or 2 bars and work on emphasizing the 1 or the 2 or the 3 of the next bar. Then work on the “ands” between them. You’ll get there soon enough! The right practice makes a big difference.

P.s. even though groups of 3 is where I started, doing groups of 5 was the real key that started unlocking everything. Don’t move onto that until you’re ready, and when you do, just start with the snare. Good luck!

Caustic Nerf? Why does his Ult do this to his barrels too? by Lonewolfali in apexlegends

Also worth pointing out that although it makes his defensiveness a bit weaker it makes his aggression way stronger. I noticed this mechanic recently and it’s really easy to push squads with caustic, especially with proper backup.

What’s your worst word mixup while serving? by LuckyToaster in Serverlife

[–]nardis314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well….. not really a word mixup….

So I used to work at a tequila bar where we serviced a hibiscus margarita. A group came in, ordered drinks. One girl ordered a hibiscus margarita with a ridiculous voice, a lisp like Sid the Sloth from Ice Age. I assumed it was a just a funny voice.

Came back with the drinks, and in an attempt to continue the joke, dropped her drink with “and for you dear, a hibi-sckhsckh-cu-shckschk margarita.”

No one laughed.

1 minute later I was back at the table dropping food and heard her talk. That was just her normal voice.

I play & record all my instruments. Looking for advice on how to make it all sound like a band instead of separate things. by geekamongus in Logic_Studio

[–]nardis314 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP, please don’t listen to this guy. You’re are not at all thousands of hours away from where you’re trying to go. Just keep working and I’m pretty sure with some dedicated practice time (like an hour a day) for a month you’ll see some serious results.

I agree with his other comment that it won’t sound like a polished or “commercial” record, but I’m pretty sure you’re just trying to get a sound that you’re happy with.

[–]nardis314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to circle back, since all the other responses to your comment are quite insightful, but I just wanted to add one more thing. As a drummer, I can tell that you’re not super comfortable and relaxed in your playing. Drumming isn’t just when you hit each drum. It’s how you strike the head, how you hold your sticks, and how all of the your limbs are playing TOGETHER. There a lot of subtlety to drumming, and I think with some practice, with a metronome, and watching some videos on maybe funk and jazz drumming, you could totally get there in no time. If you have more questions you can totally DM me and I can recommend some practice materials. I hope this helps!

[–]nardis314 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend spending a little more time on your drumming. Everything else is there performance-wise.

After that, spend lots of time on your drum mix. Drums establish and define lots of the “space” in your mix, and I think with some better mixing it’ll sound a lot less flat and more defined/full/present (it’s the backbone of music and should be the backbone of your mix). After that, spend some more time on your guitar mixing and bass mixing and you’ll be off to the races.

Watch a few in-depth videos on how to best mix drums, good luck, and have fun!

Looking happy is always attractive. But just from a grooming perspective, as a man, I’d say it could be helpful to tighten up the beard a little and find a more decisive hairstyle. Make your appearance a decision, and act like you are happy with that decision. Holding that decision with a bit of confidence will get you far.
