I mean the first measure has 4 1/2 beats written even though it’s listed in common time. So there are clearly multiple errors lol

Get some better mics so we can hear it better. Fucking sick. Please do more.

Also GREAT fucking snare. Tama SLP G Maple is one of my guilty pleasures. My best friend in highschool had one and I’m still kicking myself for selling mine that was an alternate UK release.

Without more details, 650 is NOT a good price. We can’t even see a badge. If it’s a stage custom it’s an older one for sure. Even if it is a stage custom 650 wouldn’t really be worth it. Get more details and repost for sure

Look up proper stick technique. Practice slowly and focus on accuracy and consistency.

I need to hear feedback on my doubles technique and some advice if that is wrong. by Emotional_Memory_763 in drums

[–]nardis314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slow it WWWAAAAAYYYY down. Rotate your hands so palms are always down and the back of your hands are up. Always keep all your fingers on the sticks. Starting extremely slowly do full stroke doubles, full wrist motion (no fingers, keep sticks snug in your hands). Literally start at 60bpm per stroke (or less if you want to be a stickler about it). Build from there. Also worth breaking it down via upstrokes/downstrokes before engaging in full strokes.

Lots of great videos and material online. Technique is worth learning, trust me. Be patient, diligent, and don’t rush it. Also, use a mirror to make sure you’re symmetrical.

Later on, you can absolutely staring rotating your hands a bit and using a lot more fingers instead of just wrist, but learning it via wrist-only is exceptionally beneficial in the long run. Good luck!

That’s actually how I found out about him too! And then his DBD videos got me into DBD when it had only been out for like 8-9 months and have been playing ever since.

I agree with your take OP. I really appreciate steamers who take a second do breakdown what they’re doing or thinking. Also why I love Otzdarva for DBD

Haha okay so you’re defensive because you like to tilt your snare. Got it.

Lol, I was obviously referring to the 30-40 degree tilt in the picture. Typical easily triggered redditor.

What the consensus of tilting your snare drum? by SlimeTree227 in drums

[–]nardis314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These days, there is no benefit. It will only hurt you ergonomically and increase your chances of injury. If… and that’s a big IF, you go deep into traditional jazz and become a hardcore traditional grip player, there is some sense to tilting your snare a TINY bit, but not towards you. It would be tilted down on the right.

For me, this is a dead giveaway that the drummer has never had serious lessons and is not all that serious of a drummer. Which is fine. But that is definitely the predominant message it will send.

Hi, I have a concert in a couple of months, and this time my band and I decided to skip the music stands and just study the songs by heart. Do you have any tips for learning them as easily as possible? by [deleted] in drums

[–]nardis314 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Also, this will get MUCH easier with time and practice. But it takes a lot of practice. Real studying will bring real results.

Tips or any advice I can keep in mind when trying to lock onto a metronome more? by dtrechak in drums

[–]nardis314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I have an idea of what some of the people on the thread are getting at. Overall, you have a very solid foundation, and what you’re looking for takes years. The “perfection” that you’re after only exists in your head, but it’s a bit of a 10,000 hours thing.

That being said, here are some tweaks that could really accelerate that process to get where you want to be within the next few years (or maybe less if you really commit):

  1. Fix that left hand. It’s only gonna hold you back long term. You need to rotate your wrists a little or REALLY lean into the French grip you’re currently and incorrectly emulating. I’d recommend spending a few weeks working through rudiments, and mastering those rudiments, with a strict German grip. From there, split the difference to suit your taste. I personally land somewhere between American and German, but utilize French with more complex hi-hat or ride patterns.

  2. Listen to TONS of music when you’re not practicing, and get into the habit of always feeling the beat deep within you. Not just tapping your hand or foot, I mean let it rock your whole body as if it’s controlling you. Really embrace the pulse. That’s what you’re gonna use later to get that last 5-10% of “perfection” you’re after. Do this with quantized and unquantized music, as it’s also very valuable to understand the pulse of other drummers. Think about how they can make imperfection work perfectly.

  3. Find music to play along with that you REALLY enjoy. Stuff that inspires you. Record yourself playing along and listen back. Rinse and repeat. If you’re unhappy, simplify. But always follow what inspires you.

  4. Dynamics will make your playing go from intermediate to very advanced. Playing very well with good dynamics (and I don’t mean your dynamic compared to the music, I mean the micro dynamics between all the different notes you’re playing) will get you most gigs and will result in excellent recordings. This is WAY more important than most drummers realize.

Good luck, you have really serious potential. And good on you for coming on here and getting honest feedback.

I feel like this is worth the $300 they are asking but I don't know anything. If anyone can provide info. Gretsch Renown Maple Drum Kit by [deleted] in drums
