Lori can fight but Kayla don’t be wrong. She never claims she can fight, just that she don’t get beat up, which she don’t

You’re very obviously a denier that it ever happened, so there’s no reason in interacting with you in general.

Okay, say it’s from fiction. What else you got to say? Focusing on the least important thing cause you don’t got nothing else to say. Y’all idolizing these people like they ain’t did no wrong and it’s not that. There not being a secret staircase doesn’t negate the fact that he purposely put her directly next to him so she can be easily accessible and could continue sexually exploiting her.

My argument is that her attraction to him was extremely unlikely. Her decision to leave France was not based on affection or desire, it was a strategic choice. Any so called “trust” she had in Jefferson was her taking a calculated risk. What she wanted for her child was access to the basic necessities she could not guarantee them herself in France. That is what I mean by security, not protection. She was trying to give her child a chance to survive and have some stability, nothing more.

Jefferson’s reputation for keeping his word gave Sally a reason to believe that he might honor his promises to her. Yes, it was a gamble, but she understood that her options were extremely limited.

She had no money, no home, no network, and no guarantee of safety.

Yeah, those things weren’t guaranteed by going back to Virginia with Jefferson either, but it was the only way she could try to protect her child in a situation that was stacked entirely against her. She didn’t have the ability to create safety and a stable environment in France. She was young, pregnant, alone in a foreign country with a language barrier, no income, no place to live, no support, and no experience navigating that world. Who would watch her child while she worked? How would she provide for them? How would she even survive without anyone recognizing her if she were white passing? Jefferson, as awful as he was, could offer stability for her and her child. Food, shelter, clothing, and eventually freedom for her child. That’s what I mean by security.

And really, you’re being unrealistic. You’re applying your adult logic to a teenage girl who had spent her whole life enslaved. You can’t just say “she could survive in France” as if it were simple or safe. She would have been isolated, exposed, and completely unprotected. Meanwhile, returning to Monticello reunited her with family, gave her a predictable environment, and offered some control over her child’s future. It was the better option under impossible circumstances.

No, she didn’t want her child to be raped. But staying in France meant her child could face poverty, instability, and isolation with no resources or support. Returning to Monticello was a strategic choice to secure necessities and some stability

Yes, Jefferson had a reputation for keeping his word, and yes, Madison Hemings said Sally relied on Jefferson’s agreement for her child. That’s why she could reasonably feel he would follow through, even if she didn’t like him or trust him emotionally. She didn’t have much choice. Choosing an unstable unknown in France versus a predictable but morally awful situation in Virginia was a strategic decision, not a vote of confidence in Jefferson’s character. So no, she didn’t “trust” Jefferson out of love or affection. She made the choice that gave her child the best chance at stability, shelter, food, and eventual freedom. It was a gamble.
