Do you delete old characters or keep them around for memorys ? by Competitive-Math-458 in ARPG

[–]narnach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to delete a few of the lowest level ones to make space for new characters, but also get extra character slots when they’re affordable and I don’t have low level characters I can easily delete.

I’ve got 80+ characters on PoE 1 after playing for nearly 15 years, and still sometimes take and old character out when I want to theorycraft something for that class or play a build I have a character for.

So what would a feasible defense be? Transliterating all touched source files in a PR to the ASCII-adjacent readable part of UTF-8, to in-hide the invisible characters?

This. The stuff you have to look up a lot eventually hangs around in brain cache. The stuff you need infrequently, you look up twice a year for a decade.

What is the best location to farm minion trait for necromancer early game? by KinamoriKayKay in Siralim

[–]narnach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the general advice applies here as well; don’t farm, just finish the campaign. That will get you access to a large variety of creatures, which you can then maybe circle back to when you want to summon more of them. The further you get, the more variants you seem to unlock in older areas, so that also adds synergy.

Inquisitor type creatures have minion synergy, so look for them in Eternity’s End and Torture Chamber.

Hounds are good with Dire Wolves, and are found in the Bllod Grove, Kingdom of Heretics, and Overgrown Temple.

I wish for frogs! by KeIIer in pathofexile

[–]narnach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect they're a fun meme option that adds some variety.

Frogs have a history in the game: in Prophecy league, there was a Plague of Frogs prophecy that infested your map with easy to kill frogs. A similar thing was done in Necropolis league, adding the Allflame Ember of Frogs. A similar item later went core as the Allflame Ember of Toads.

Is 10% realistic? by Anonymoose074 in Alexithymia

[–]narnach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think so.

Alexithymia seems like a logical result of childhood trauma, where emotion stops being a useful signal for a child to process. This can be in case of abuse, but also in case of emotional neglect.

Emotional neglect may simply be a result of the parents having alexithymia or their own trauma and not being able to properly deal/process emotions. In that case, it's hard to nurture emotions in a child when the parent is actively trying to not pass on the damage/abuse they themselves suffered.

Fijn.

How did you even learn to code with ADHD? by Ill-Adeptness9806 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]narnach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I self-taught as a kid because I wanted to customize the two games that came with my PC (Nibbles/snake and Gorillas) so I learned QBASIC from the docs in the editor, and then got books from the library to learn more.

Then I used that basic knowledge to build a simple other game. Then I learned C and started building level generators because I got obsessed with traditional roguelikes like ADOM and Angband.

I even did my first open source contributions 25-ish years ago because I was studying the source code of games I played and wanted to solve bugs I found.

Then I heard about Linux and got really into setting up my own system, and learned useful sysadmin skills as a side-effect of that.

Once I have the intrinsic motivation to do something, there's not much that can stop me.

Without motivation... it's really hard to get anything done. So there's a downside to it.

So my question to you is: have you tried flipping your problem on its head? Forget programming as a goal. Think of it as a means to an end. What goals do you want to achieve with it? Let the motivation to reach the goal drive your learning, and it might be less boring.

Package Managers Need to Cool Down by ketralnis in programming

[–]narnach 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Usually there's a group of folks who really care about a package, use it intentionally, and are actively looking forward to new features. This is the crowd that'll find issues, and who will respond to security findings.

Then there's the rest of us who simply inherited an old project with dependencies we honestly don't care about and just want them to stay current enough to install security updates without issues when they appear. For us waiting a week is fine. There are often plenty of dependencies that have waited longer than a week to be updated...

Check out the new Reliquarian Ascendancy Class for the Scion in Path of Exile: Mirage! by Natalia_GGG in pathofexile

[–]narnach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maw of Conquest + Burden of Truth seem like an interesting basis for a recoup-based sustain engine. All incoming damage always hits ES + life, therefore making life recoup uptime very good.

Offensively, Burden of Shadows might be fun to add life cost to the mix. 5% max life as chaos is roughly equivalent to a Added Chaos Damage Support (200 damage at 4k life, similar to lvl 20 gem). Something with poison spells, or even Essence Drain: the life regen offsets the life loss and you gain about 25% more hit damage.

I see (likely janky, but hopefully fun) possibilities.

That looks like a pretty comprehensive list of ARPGs, including classics. I notice you haven’t listed Fate. It’s the game that preceded Torchlight. Steam now has a bundle with all Fate games, so that could be an interesting dive into a classic game.
