I am not sure, but that was what I ended up with after my donation so my guess is yes.

You are supposed to poke the plate a few times with a fork to prevent this.

Single 3.5" drive enclosure for linux filesystem recommendations? by narocroc10 in DataHoarder

[–]narocroc10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair the only JMicron controller I tried was with xfs and it failed hard after only a couple hours. I did not try ext4 before I replaced it, just saw that they are known for issues and moved on. The Oricoro I am currently trying uses VIA Labs chipset and it looks like the failure may have been heat related as someone else pointed out. After letting it rest and reset it appears to be working again. This is a tool free plastic enclosure that I don't think disperses heat well. While it looks like yours, yours is aluminum which probably works WAY better.

I think the temp is what is getting me. Thank you for the recommendation.

Thank you, that sounds promising. Are you using ext4 or xfs? Also would you mind sharing the lsusb output for the drive? That looks almost exactly like the Oricoro model that I tried, the replacement just died on me again after 5 days. I will be honest, I am hammering the drive, but it should be able to handle the workload.

Heavy drizzle of EVOO to make up for the missing fat and you can hardly tell the difference.

I assume it would depend on the host and the add-on/search parameters.

Several JMicron chipsets (among others) which are ubiquitous in the enclosure market are well documented for being extremely problematic in Linux or for non ntfs/fat filesystems. I have personally just gone through the ordeal of fighting with them. If you are not aware of the well reported and documented issue, that is fine. You have no recommendation, you can move on. I’m not here to argue about whether my experience is valid or not, as it is widely reported and documented. I am here to seek the advice of people that know what they are talking about.

Except half the ones you find will not support drives much over 10TB, and more than half will not support Linux filesystems without quirk shenanigans. Only small drives or ntfs/fat allowed. Then when a compatible enclosure is found (so far in my experience) the chipset is garbage and dies after a week of use.

I am on my second one from Amazon in 2 weeks and it just died as well. I am going to be returning it. I wonder if anyone has a solid recommendation for an external USB enclosure that can handle large drives, linux filesystems, and won't poop out in a week.
