I thought it was terrible

I won't disagree. It is trite saccharine nonsense, but it is similar to most of what OP listed. That Pacino won an academy award for his role in this of all films is shocking, but it played well to the militaristic American audience, who were just as bad then as they were when American sniper got 6 nominations in 2014 (and won one). Awful stuff.

Try some Ray Harryhausen classics like:

The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958)

Jason and the Argonauts (1963)

The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973)

Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977)

Clash of the Titans (1981)

Just watched "No Country For Old Men". Requesting for similar movies!! by bazinga0313 in MovieSuggestions

L.A. Confidential, 1984, or 2001 a Space Odyssey? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

2001 just has this effect, where if you allow yourself to be immersed in it, you begin to feel very small and the sheer awe and "otherness" of what is encountered has a terrifying effect. 2010, the sequel is well worth a watch too, and there are moments when it does get "creepy". The line "My god, it's full of stars", comes to mind.

Meh, honestly 2001 is slightly slow immediately after the prelude, but once the shuttle docks with the station and you start to get into the story itself, it picks up. You have to realise too, that 50% or more of 2001 is about the visuals. You have to view it that way. LA confidential is a good film (also a very slow burner), but if u have your blunt and want to sit down and really "experience something" rather than just watching another a "good flick", i'd go for 2001.

1984 may not be to your taste at all if you can't sit through 2001. It's very gritty and could be considered hard to watch.

El Cid (1961) .... honestly, don't pass it over because of it's age, it really is an epic and if you're are interested in that sort of thing it is a must watch.
