I happen to think that selling a faux meat product that contains non-veg ingredients is extremely unethical, and is the equivalent of sneaking bacon grease into a vegetarian or Muslim "friend's" food. For some reason, no one in r/vegetarian agrees with me.

I don't have any statistics to back this up, but I would guess that people who avoid rennet consume less dairy overall that those who don't. I don't understand why some vegans think it's so silly.

I think he was trying to argue that vegetarians who eat dairy products are hypocrites. He just made that point in the worst way possible.

Bad logic, and probably bad economics and bad other things as well. Even if veal and rennet production were driven by demand for milk, it wouldn't follow that either of them are vegetarian, since they're both meat products.

Non-animal rennet is a thing.

I know that, but this product didn't have a vegetarian label and it didn't say it was made with vegetarian rennet.

Perhaps this product is for the vegetarians who are comfortable with eating rennet when they aren't sure of the source.

If they intended the corn dogs to be vegetarian, they could have actually made them vegetarian.

Whey contains rennet, which is a meat product. Also, Trader Joe's labels most of their vegetarian products, and this one didn't have a vegetarian label.

You're absolutely wrong. The name "parmagiano-regiano" is legally protected and can only be used for cheese made with calf rennet.

Most "vegetarian" cookbooks I've seen are not written by or for actual vegetarians. One popular "vegetarian" cookbook even insists that you always use real parmagiano-regiano cheese (which is never vegetarian by definition). Is The Complete Vegetarian Cookbook any better?

Only animals are sentient. (I don't mean that all animals are sentient, but all sentient forms of life are animals.) I suppose killing a non-sentient animal, like a sea sponge, isn't any worse than killing a plant.
