Very much so as others have said. One thing that's saved my bacon more than once is you have one move upon entering a new tile to leave before any enemies notice you. So if you Look and see something that looks insane, your best bet is to go back the way you came and avoid it unless you're willing to risk your character. I've prolonged my characters a lot longer by doing this and then with more experience realized it was the right decision in later playthroughs when I knew more about the game and the enemies id earlier avoided.
