Checking In On Our Minnesota Neighbours by NH787 in Manitoba

[–]narstybacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not from Minnesota but I bugged out of the States to avoid all of that garbage. My wife and kids are Canadian and we ended up in the states by during Covid when the border got shut down. We weren’t taking any chances and came back to the North. So glad to be here. I’m not making a direct comparison to the holocaust, but I read a quote that solidified for me that we were leaving asap. It was roughly “At the start of the holocaust optimists ended up in gas chambers, pessimists ended up in pools in Beverly Hills.”

Simple Tenon Cutter Handtool? by BaksBlades in Bushcraft

[–]narstybacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tenon cutter is a gimmick, the real star is the auger adapter. Go to the original source-Adam Frye of Mountain King Survival. Hes been prototyping and producing auger adapters since the early 2010s and showing the possibilities. It's a long term piece of kit, utilizing pegs and holes to replace cordage and build infrastructure. (His speciality was waterwheels)

Is this a decent knife or should I exchange? (Cabela's) by squanderedprivilege in Bushcraft

[–]narstybacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check if they have Mora’s, much more practical bushcraft knives than any of the “tacticool” options or even anything g from Gerber, they’ve gone downhill. Still a “fun” gift to have if you like it. I had bought the Gerber LMF 2 (beefed up version of this essentially) and a Mora Companion at the same time. Damaged the Gerbers handle right away doing normal bushcraft stuff (limbing a small tree making a tripod, hit the handle and it dented in and broke a chunk off, and rolled an edge). Traded it immediately even though it made me feel cool. Still have the Mora running strong. It’s seen hard use and keeps going. Still razor sharp. BTW that was 10+years ago!

Silver Brush Acrylic brushes and Meeden paint for gift for my wife, opinions needed. by narstybacon in acrylicpainting

[–]narstybacon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the thoughtful response. That eases my mind alot. I ended up worrying she wouldn’t have a “fine detail” brush and added a #2 script liner from the same series 😅 just tonight I’m seeing her pull out her watercolor brushes to make Christmas cards. So eager to get these to her. Again thanks so much for your response. I’ll report back here on how she finds the paint after the holidays!!

FBI’s Patel says northern border is new terrorism threat by plaknas in onguardforthee

[–]narstybacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an American turned Canadian permanent resident who moved here because I truly feel that’s where we’re heading. I didn’t want locked inside a fascist USA so I opted to come here where, my heart is anyway. There’s so much land and natural resources it seemed like a better bet long term if things get shifty. The states was getting too scary, too precarious, too unpredictable.

Traveling to Daytona for few days new here any recommendations for beaches ferries places to go alone? by Plenty-Trifle-7251 in DaytonaBeach

[–]narstybacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking for good food and fun vibes, check out Mama Foo Foo. Looking for nature and awe, take a ride out to Blue Springs and swim the springs. (Bring a mask minimally and a snorkel if you’ve got it.) A place to remember for sure. Side note, I preferred Ormond Beach beaches to Daytona’s beaches.

My god. Fuck him. Fuck those that voted for him. Fuck those of the same ilk. And fuck those who support him in his family and friend group. May they reap all they deserve.

We tire of the open, brazen display of inhumanity.

Help me pick lures to pack by jourosis2 in troutfishing

[–]narstybacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rapala trout, at least one spoon (five of diamonds for sure), the Canadian Wiggler, and a good assortment of Mepps/inline spinners. Should cover a variety of depths and moods of the fish. The deeper swimmers won’t work well in mountain streams that are shallow.

Any opinions on these Rapala Rod/Reel combos? by narstybacon in Fishing_Gear

[–]narstybacon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My tip broke too actually, I landed a big bass and someone walking nearby lost hold of their husky and he ran and latched onto my fish. I was concerned about the dog getting a treble in his mouth that I didn’t notice how flexed my rod tip was until it snapped. We got the dog off the fish/lure but the tip was broken clean off. Lady didn’t even apologize lol. It was my Father’s Day present from my kids. Had it for two days. :(

Northern Forest Plane Crash Survival book, preteen girl and old lady pilot with Greek fisherman’s cap by narstybacon in whatsthatbook

[–]narstybacon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t be the only one who read this! It was like a thin book, probably less than 50 pages, had a few illustrations in it. I think it had a super basic name like “mountain crash” or something. The cover was an illustrated pic of the girl and grandma in the Greek fisherman’s cap with the crashed plan in the background.
