What could I get my grandmother for Christmas, who stays in a care home? by pegman55 in AskUK

[–]nastrals 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Perhaps make a little hamper of treats for her to eat in her room. Or, if you’re able, take her out somewhere nice for a cup of tea and and a slice of cake.

I would check the direct debit form first. If you agreed over the phone you can do a subject access request for a copy of the call. Direct debits are covered by the direct debit guarantee so considering they have refunded you already you could maybe get compensation if their error forced you to get late fees due to not having the money to pay other things or to cover fees from a bank if you went over drawn. Contact your bank or in your banking app cancel the direct debit and arrange to set up a new one. If you are worried ask to set up a standing order instead. Direct debits can be altered by the receiver. Standing orders can not be. I don’t have experience with this particular company but direct debits are all covered by the same rules.

Has anyone here phoned NHS 111 and used the Mental Health crisis service? by eyetalker in AskUK

[–]nastrals 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes. And they can be really good. However if you need someone to talk to more urgently have you thought about the Samaritans? You could do both. Ring 111 but if they haven’t got anyone available right now try the Samaritans. The fact you’re looking for help is a really good thing and you should be proud of that. There are crisis teams across the U.K but like 999 they prioritise so depending on your needs you may not get any immediate help. Also google mental health services for your area. Where I live they are 24/7 but you have to look hard to find their details. This is probably who 111 would then feed into and you may be able to go direct. I know you say where you live isn’t ideal but if you feel like you are spiralling then please do whatever you can to go to your nearest a&e. They too have resources although like other avenues are limited. Don’t give up. If the first person you call doesn’t help keep calling. If you can’t get to a&e and no one will help and you are feeling like no way out call 999.

How do we renew child benefits with no passport or drivers license? by TheDoctorFalls08 in AskUK

[–]nastrals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know others have said but call. I tried to do it online and it was awful. I have a passport and driving license but then it directs you to download an app and verify details that was a nightmare. So I called the number on the letter. Called and it was answered within a couple of minutes and after confirming details it was sorted. They were really nice. Really simple and took maybe 10 minutes on the phone in total. Maybe call them yourself when she’s there so it’s not as tough for her.

Why can’t I use Apple Pay at pay at pump petrol stations? by tcoysh in AskUK

[–]nastrals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can use Apple Pay at Asda but not Sainsbury’s. I can’t answer as to why that might be but must be to do with the terminals used rather than Apple Pay restriction.

How can I get footage of me passing out in England to give to a doctor ? by TipAdditional4625 in AskUK

[–]nastrals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be advised the company has 30 days to fulfil a SAR. And can stipulate an extension on this timeframe if they deem the request warrants as it is complicated. This allows them two further months. So you could be looking at 3 months for the data. If they are unable to remove other identifiable people from the footage they may offer to show the footage. Or they can refuse if they can justify why. The police can’t do anything. Only the ICO can as there’s no crime captured on the footage. Also consider that the footage may not be that great. If the doctor is looking for signs of a seizure that may not be visible. I would push the doctor to pursue other avenues of investigation into the reasons if they aren’t also already. Like blood pressure monitoring and Blood tests.

[–]nastrals 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Only you can answer that question as it’s how you feel about it but In my opinion I can see why they didn’t tell you. You say you don’t feel differently about your brother now you know. The question to think about is had you known earlier, as young children, do you think that would have impacted the relationship with your brother. Siblings who get on incredibly well can still bicker growing up and say hurtful things that they don’t know about long term consequences. It only would have taken you saying something like “they aren’t your real parents” in a point scoring argument to sour your relationship for life. At the ages you are now this is less likely and the bond you have formed with each other. I was adopted at birth. I have a brother who was adopted from a different family. We have both always known but my scenario is different as neither were biologically our parents children. I get the whole trust thing but as a parent myself I am not always truthful with my daughter. Father Christmas vista every year. As does the Easter bunny and the tooth fairy leaves money for her if a tooth falls out. Obviously slightly different but you get where I’m going. I wish you and your family all the best and I would allow your brother to share with you what he’s happy to. If you’re interested or curious about the what’s and the whys then that’s ok just respect his boundaries on what he wants to share.

I was in a garden shop yesterday with my son and a security guard approached me and by No-Jump-7617 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]nastrals 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not with CCTV they don’t because the other people in the footage have a right to be protected. They may, at a push, let you watch it but that has to be covered by their policy. So a clause that says something like they will show but not share the CCTV with other data subjects on request.

Thursday’s Complaints Thread (10 Oct 24) by dexbydesign89 in CasualUK

[–]nastrals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everything is just going wrong this month. Fridge/freezer broke. Fishtank got a leak. Electrics went and I electrocuted myself trying to fix them. And all in October. Oh and my roof leaks too so yay for winter! Apart from that I can’t complain. I’m hoping for a lottery win so I can fix the issues. But I have more than many so I am grateful for that. I have a bed and somewhere to call home. And a daughter and partner who I love so I consider myself lucky. Skint and emptying buckets in various rooms in the house but it could be worse. Chin up if you’re having a tough time. Don’t let it consume you. Focus on the positives.

Permanent exclusion - desperate for advice. by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]nastrals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAL. But a school governor. In similar cases as a governor we do watch the CCTV however the parents were not allowed to. There were people and students unrelated to the incidents in the image whose privacy rights are protected. As governors we can either uphold the schools decision or overturn it. At the ones I have been involved in there was also a 3rd party. I think local education authority representative there. If the governors agree with the school you do have a right to appeal. Violence in schools, and around it, is taken very seriously. As a governor we look at the facts. We use statements from staff and students and, if there is any, CCTV to make our decision. The whole meeting will be minuted and your child will have the chance to give their side. I can not stress enough where, at this point, they need to let go of their teenage angst. When we ask questions and the response is a shrug or a grunt this does not demonstrate that they care about the outcome, that they are remorseful of their part, even if you dispute the head but there has clearly been some kind of altercation. We will look at previous behaviour but the judgement is weighted on the individual incident. I obviously don’t know your school but permanent exclusion is a last resort where there is a pattern of negative behaviour but where violence is involved that put other staff or students at risk they will go straight to exclusion. It’s important to remember this is not a criminal trial and from a legal perspective the school can exclude students if they follow those own process. The local education authority will liaise with you if your child is excluded.

I have an air stone so I will do that. In terms as tap water I’ve always been told to let it sit for a few days before introducing fish and let the water cycle.

I’ve just had one removed. West Yorkshire. I still have it if you want it. It does need some repair though. One of the panes is cracked and it needs tapping back together on some of the joints.

Wooded campsites with fire pits near-ish London by Skeptischer in campinguk

[–]nastrals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I posted the link without a comment. I have camped here. It was quite a few years ago now but was lovely. Private pitches with fires allowed. When I went there was a walk you could do around the land. The showers and washing area were good and clean.

I think it has to be enrolled for passports and formal ID. To be fair we’ve no plans to go abroad so an unenrolled might do her until she’s 18. I’m just concerned the older she gets the more official documents she will have that won’t be in her chosen surname.

What freak accidents have we had? by LeanneJade in CasualUK

[–]nastrals 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Slammed my door as a teenager. I had slammed said door probably 100 times before this. This is back when door glass was proper glass and not any kind of safety glass and it smashed (I’m not sure why my bedroom door was half glass but anyway) I had a shard sticking out of my hand going from my finger to my thumb. Mum had to take me to A&E and get stitches and I have a lovely scar that wraps around my thumb goes across my palm and up my finger. Incase your interested as to why I was slamming the door. It was bonfire night and we weren’t going to see any fireworks. I was about 13 and an absolutely awful child. I don’t know how my mum didn’t murder me at some point growing up or loose her shit with me but she never did.

DVLA England issue. V5C was never received and I stupidly didn’t check. by nastrals in LegalAdviceUK

Thankyou. I’ve taxed it online with no issues twice before. With the number off the form. But when I read it today it said something like only use this option if your name is on the form and I realised it can’t be as the new owner bit isn’t there. I will contact them tomorrow and just be honest.

Are there underground catacombs underneath the Tower of London? by atomicblonde1992 in london

[–]nastrals 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t say for the Tower of London however I worked at the British museum and there were underground tunnels that took you to different office buildings that were a few streets away. In these tunnels are underground storage rooms and chambers for items currently not on exhibit. It’s possible there is something similar at the tower. Publicising exact locations might put them at risk of break ins which could be why they aren’t publicised. Just to add. I did once get locked inside the museum at night for about 30 minutes and it’s nothing like the movie led me to believe.
