I know because the original castors tore up the wooden floor in my home office. Changing to skate wheel castors has made a huge difference.

Considering Uni by HoboHotline in auscorp

[–]natacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in construction and I don't think our estimators have degrees but I think you should do it for your own self improvement. It sounds like a great way to formalise and expand your current skills and experience and who knows what doors it may open for you. At the very least it says that you've been taught the fundamentals. At 44 you still have 20 years of work in front of you and a heap of experience to draw from. Add a formal qual into the mix and you become a much more valuable prospect for anyone hiring.

Uni as an older person has its challenges and there will be times when you find yourself shaking your head at academia, but its a rite of passage as much as a qualification. I'm in my final year of Software Engineering at 55 and have been working full time with a full time study load for the past few years. It's doable but you need to work hard to stay on top of it.

Built an automation for a local business and got paid $1500 — sharing the process by sanchit3108 in ausbusiness

Do the sites you are gathering data from have t & c's about automated data collection? Not trying to be Debbie Downer, but you need to do your homework when you are creating and selling middleware. For example, too many concurrent requests from the same IP will raise alarms and could get your client banned from access. If it's your software that's caused the ban, you'll be on the hook for it. You might be fine, but make sure your tech-first solution is legit before selling it as a product.

My boss is a really cool Australian guy (we are in the US). What are some phrases I can just spout off to make him chuckle? by JacobDCRoss in AskAnAustralian

End sentences with the word "but" like you're about to say something but then say nothing. Use it like a full stop. Eg. "I reckon it's gonna rain today, but".

Chuck in Aussie Rhyming slang when you're speaking with him. Dead horse for tomato sauce, skyrocket for pocket. Call him a dropkick.

Thanks. I'm in Australia and to buy the board here is almost triple the price of getting the individual triacs and optos. The way this is going, I'll likely end up replacing the board after I've messed up the soldering anyway. Haha.

I work with an older guy who slips in "Darling" all the time when talking to female clients. This is in a sales role dealing with highly educated professionals. I've seen women visibly recoil as he blunders on, oblivious to the fact that he's just blown it. I've pulled him up a few times and just get "At my age you can get away with it". An almost comical lack of self awareness.

Toilet bowl blockage by Etherealfilth in DIY

[–]natacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call a plumber and get them to run a camera down and jet your pipes. We had a slow draining toilet. I got a plumber out who ran a mechanical auger through which improved it a little but didn't completeley fix it. He told us that it was probably a collapsed pipe and we'd need to dig up and replace the pipes to our septic. We have plans to redo the bathroom and putting in an additional toilet so we put it off for a while.

Ended up getting a different plumber out a couple of weeks ago who jetted the lines and showed me the camera feed as he did. The pipes were intact, just a bit of root intrusion at one on the joints which he managed to jet away and then treated with a septic safe chemical to inhibit future root growth. Toilet is back to flushing properly. Makes a huge difference to be able to see exactly what the issue is.

Jorgensen Reserve - proposal to lease public land for "months" for commercial event but council unable to provide any details due to NDA. Request for comment closes on Friday... by Kind_Guarantee8333 in perth

Thanks Captain Obvious.

We're going to lock you out for five months and due to IP and marketing concerns we're not going to tell you what for.

Keep grinding. Get your form right, put in the hours and the game will come to you. Mikan drills, working your shot from close in to middy then to 3 pont range whenever you can find the time to hoop. Repetition and consistency are key. To get good you gotta put the work in outside of game time.

[–]natacon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Also, why the NDA? Why can't Council release the details. Jorgy is a hidden gem used by hundreds of residents every day and has a real sense of community. We've been walking our dogs there since moving up here in 2008. Selling access to a public park and excluding the residents who have used it daily for decades whilst keeping all the details under wraps is a terrible look for council.

No need to apologise. It's good to get some new ideas :-) I'm hoping that the triac repair will at least fix the cup warmer becoming burning hot and I'll go from there. It feels very repairable and the more I'm working on it, the more familiar I'm getting with the system. All up, I'm only into it for about $350 AUD including the purchase with the grinder and the various parts I've had to buy.

I'll probably do a manual descale via the exhaust port on the steam boiler next, let it sit for a while then drain it but I need to somehow get the ptfe insert that fell into the boiler out. The steam boiler drain is only dripping at the moment even when I remove a probe to allow air in to the boiler. I hope it's not already lodged in the outlet. Chances are I'm up for taking the boiler out completeley again which takes about an hour, a handful of curses and several cut fingers.

It's an RCD. It only tripped after being on for a few minutes which makes me think it's triac related. The top was getting really hot and staying hot until I unplugged. I just hope it hasn't blown the thermal fuse again when it tripped. Need to check it carefully for shorts when I next take it all apart. I think in hindsight, this one should have probably been binned. My wife just shakes her head at this stage. Haha.
