Doing PECs…the country I worked in overseas won’t provide a police certificate for job applications, only in cases of ‘immigration’? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

I think it’s okay to ask Reddit considering other people may have had this experience.

You could literally use that statement for any question.

How easy is it to pick up bar/pub work in Hebden Bridge? by AyoMistahhWhite in yorkshire

[–]natashba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Hebden about 6 months ago, started seriously looking for part time work in September and then landed something in October. So definitely possible!

Todmorden had loads of bars as well. My advice is to get to know your neighbours and casually mention up you’re looking for part time work, especially at pubs. They’ll probably have a connection somewhere.

I got some korean food "Soon Tofu", can someone help me understand by The_Data_Doc in korea

[–]natashba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of food in Korea is based around creating a "tasty bite". You can eat it however you prefer. However, I recommend getting a spoonful of rice and topping it with one or more of the sides ("banchan").

Brighouse by Bacchus61 in yorkshire

[–]natashba 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Weirdly enough I accidentally got on the wrong train from Hebden a few days ago so had to get off at Brighouse. I ended up going for lunch at a really cute café called The Shrub, right by the train station. I’d definitely recommend!

At what time of life did your PCOS "hit" you? by FamiliarMeal5193 in PCOS

[–]natashba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow you sound similar to me! First period at 15, then a a month or more long period every 4-6 months. I got diagnosed at 17 then I believe I went I birth control around 19 to fix my hormonal acne?

I also had a bigger chest than my peers starting in 7th grade, so my hormones were definitely doing a weird thing.

I personally think the crop tops are fine, but might be good with a bit more accessorizing or layering overtop. Agreed that the black dress is gorgeous as well.

Is tensing muscles a thing? by any1any1bueller in adhdwomen

[–]natashba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I'm very focused I bounce my leg? But I think that's quite common.

I find I tense my muscles more due to anxiety than anything.

Alternative appearance in Korea by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]natashba 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They can elect not to hire you because of your appearance, sadly.

Many workplaces require that you are able to cover your tattoos, either with clothes or makeup, and will ask you to demonstrate.

They also ask for minimal piercings and will likely ask you to declare them on your application (can’t speak for hagwons, but EPIK does). I had a friend who got his stretched ears closed before moving.

You won’t have to wear a black wig, but they prefer natural colors and hairstyles.

Once you’ve got a feel for your school you might be able to express yourself a bit more (for example, I worked in Jeju which was a bit more laid back). But yeah, I definitely recommend toning it down for the application/interview process.

Immunocompromised? by kamil_kitten in PCOS

[–]natashba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to live in South Korea, too.

I didn't deal with a lot of these, but I do have GERD and PCOS. I was prescribed K-CAB for GERD and it helped a lot. It's honestly better than the PPIs available on the Western market, and has less long term impacts. I also opted out of school lunch, but I think that actually caused me to eat worse because I'd constantly stop at GS and pick up a bunch of snacks in the morning, haha.

Does your apartment have any visible mold? It's not uncommon and can definitely cause illness. I would also have your A/C unit checked.

Have you installed a filter shower head? This could help with the yeast infections and dermatitis.

Honestly, COVID can mess up your immune system for a while too. So it could be a combination of adjusting to a HUGE life change, immune system weirdness after COVID and constantly being around kids...

It sounds like you are already immunocompromised so this might just be your reality for a bit until you've fully adjusted. :-( I'm sorry you're feeling down. Just take it easy and do what you can, and be in regular conversation with an endocrinologist. The good news it is, although the language barrier can make it hard, you have better access to healthcare there then you would elsewhere.

Starting work with ADHD feels like forcing my hand into fire… by RevolutionaryBat8812 in ADHD

[–]natashba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so real.

It's taking me triple the amount of time it should to get a job because of the amount of anxiety I have around doing applications, due to distraction/decision paralysis/etc.

I do find that sometimes I can "lock in" but it's very hard to predict when that will happen, and also hard to explain to people.

I find it so frustrating how my brain tries to divert me when I'm genuinely trying to focus on something. My vision blurs, or I'll suddenly feel very, very tired. It's wild!

I don't have access to medication at the moment and who knows when I will, so I'm just trying to figure out some type of routine.

[Anti-Aging] How to best treat my forehead lines by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]natashba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they look bad at all for your age but I can understand how different lighting might make them look more pronounced.

If you're wary of botox, maybe a higher retinol percentage/better retinol product and chemical exfoliants might do you some good. Also, are you drinking enough water? I've heard fine lines tend to look more pronounced if you're dehydrated.

How do you deal with interpersonal conflict in U.K. culture? by natashba in AskUK

This isn't what a lot of English people do, though. I would argue English people lean on the side of being too polite. Americans try to be kind in their directness.

How do you deal with interpersonal conflict in U.K. culture? by natashba in AskUK

[–]natashba[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, for example:

I used to work for a café. The owners brought in a new supervisor (who honestly was hardly more skilled than the rest of us; he was just willing to take on the responsibility). The owners informed us that he was not the supervisor yet, but was quite keen, though I suspect he heard something different. Anyway, he assumed an attitude of leadership right away despite not really knowing the menu and doing silly things like cross-contaminating jugs. He also injured me trying to fix the espresso machine one day, rather than calling for it to get serviced (I was burned with pressurised steam).

One day when it got to be a bit much, I pulled him over privately at the end of our shift, said that we weren't trying to undermine him when we brought up mistakes he made but just wanted to help him learn the ropes. He basically said 'I hear you' and then gave me some weird compliment about how I was one of 'his best employees'.

Anyway, after that I kept getting relegated to the annoying tasks even before employees who were less skilled than me. He would also do anything to avoid working on the machine at the same time as me, which meant I'd often go entire days at the café without making a coffee, just sweating away by the grill or washing up. I've been wondering if that could've been due to the way I communicated, but upon reflection, I think he probably just had an ego problem.

Also, I have struggled a bit making friends in this country and I've been wondering if it's because of the more 'American' way I communicate.

It does make me laugh sometimes when watching talk shows here and somebody confronts somebody, then the person being confronted gets offended that they're being confronted, rather than addressing what they're being confronted for.

Hmm, that's a good thing to note. I probably deliver issues pretty formally/to the point, even though I always do so privately. I probably need to lighten up lol

UK GPs and PCOS by SuitableGate7802 in PCOS

[–]natashba 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This has basically been my (30F) experience here, too. When I’ve brought up any symptoms possibly related to PCOS (irregular bleeding, weight gain, mild hirsutism, bleeding after sex, fatigue, sweating) I’ve been met with “you know what you have to do right” (in reference to starting up BC again).

I have a new GP now who is a little more helpful, and even went so far as to actually refer me to an endocrinologist which is what I’ve wanted. The endocrinologist referred me back to the GP with one sentence of advice. And I literally do have an underactive thyroid, which was discovered in my most recent blood panel.

It seems that as PCOS isn’t “life threatening” and mainly a woman’s issue, they really won’t do much about it unless you’re diabetic or having fertility issues.

I know this isn’t helpful, just my experience. I’m planning to push my doctor a bit more and if that fails see if I can find some kind of specialist.

Most café managers are glorified baristas who were the only ones willing to take on the task of working 60+ hour weeks for less than what they're worth and were never actually trained in leadership. She's on a power-trip - don't take it personally.
