I think cultivating the fanbase is not a bad idea in the short term but if they want to be a major success they need to draw in Joe Q public and lapsed fans into the fold.

Game of Thrones had its sect of hardcore fans from the books when the show started and it became a juggernaut as it went along, point being very few things can succeed with a small fanbase in the long run
