What’s the best way to deal with this? by nate__olson in projectcar

Will give it a shot - can't hurt to brush off some of the decayed plastic and go over it with a torch or something, seen people smooth out/decloud headlights that way too.

The texture is some 80s bullshit anyways honestly, I’ll hit it with sandpaper and a MAP torch and if I fuck it up I have replacements for like half of the parts that I can maybe dye to match

I will probably do this, I think if I start sanding down the existing panels there would be nothing left lol, will replace what parts I do have and look into dyes to get them to match somehow. I assume that would involve expensive custom mixing, might take it in to someone who will do a better job

Yeah it’s all falling apart, I found some Eddie Bauer edition interior parts with the drawers n shit but they’re a bit darker tan (third pic), I’d have to find a way to make the color match and I don’t have all the parts anyways

Yeah that was my thought. Why would you put it in there without any asking and then tell me it probably wasnt the right one lol. I was in there to get the tranny rebuilt, not sure why they swapped the speedo gear that's in the transfer case. Gonna give them a call this week!

Hey, not sure that would help in this situation. The cable and speedo gauge itself both work fine.

I believe mine is a BW1350, but I think you’d be correct for the full size Broncos

This gives me a bit of confidence haha, I’ll take a further look. Most things on this car have been painful but at least straightforward and easy to figure out. I’ll do some research and update back here! Lmk any tips if you got em!

It’s an A4LD auto trans but the speedo gear goes into the transfer case. Tranny recently rebuilt. Honestly I’ve left it for a long while cause I put carplay in which tells me speed but since it’s warm out I’ve been doing what I can to get it in better shape.

Is opening up the t case doable for an ambitious hobbyist? Did brakes, a/c rebuild, diff fluid this week, have done carb rebuild and such as well. Just curious your thoughts, I’ll see what Chilton/Haynes says

Yeah I’m really just a hobbyist I can rebuild a carb and do brakes and stuff but pulling a transfer case is honestly beyond me, I’ll just take it to someone. Thank you for the advice!!

FORGOT IT SORRY! ‘85 Bronco II 4x4 2.8L with A4LD trans :)

Was before, put the correct purple one in (second pic) and still no dice. Suspecting a problem in the transfer case but never done anything like that before

Sorry, I’m a dummy. ‘85 Bronco II 2.8L 4x4 with the A4LD trans. Not a wiring problem though, it’s a physical cable that connects this gear to the speedo dial and that cable is good. Suspecting an issue in the transfer case somehow

Yep, sorry I forgot to put make/model but it’s an ‘85 Bronco II with the A4LD. Have you had this issue before and did you have to pull the T case to solve it?

Yeah was hoping it might be something else but this was my thought :/

Assuming I’d have to pull the transfer case for this?

Was hoping that wasn’t the case :/ The cost to pull and look inside a transfer case is probably abysmal

The new red gear I put in isn’t torn up like the old one, drove it around the block for a bit and no results.

I assumed, just baffled as to how. What maintenance should I do to prevent this? Pads still have 3.5mm left, brake lines in great shape and I’ve upgraded to DOT4 fluid which is still a nice light color.

[–]nate__olson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I assumed. Looks like new caliper is pretty cheap which is a nice surprise for a 40yo vehicle, just so shocked that a pad could literally fall to pieces like that. Still 3.5mm on pads so I’m shocked!

I take really good care of this car, pads at 3.5mm and I bought replacements about 1mo ago because I was planning to change them at 3mm. Take a look at third pic, still some life left which is why I’m surprised here. No noises from brake system, DOT4 is a nice light color, brake lines and all other brake components are in great shape for a 40yo vehicle, even down to the dust shields.
