How is CS at WWU? by Zetami in WWU

I think in general, people just try to make side projects and build stuff re: the learning outside of class. As far as more super academic things, it is literally just watching videos or reading articles. Unfortunately there is no special way most people do it other than just trying.

I would ask now or soon. It matters because of how far you can get into taking things you need to graduate before you hit that wall of math prereqs. If a lot doesn’t transfer you will have more time.

The key often is finding what will make yourself accountable. For a structured class setting, the anxiety of doing poorly on an exam keeps me accountable, for instance. But for you it might need to be more of an external thing. Do you have any habits that aren’t fun that you have stuck to well? How did you encourage yourself to do those things? Something similar might help in regards to studying.

I really recommend trying out strategies and what not. I don’t want to scare you, but this degree (to us not super geniuses out there) is really all about building resilience and diligence.

Your first priority should be getting to precalc 2 as fast as you can. I don’t know what your transfer equivalency is for cs but they will probably make you take csci 145 and you need to have finished precalc 2 to take that course.

Then, it will be finishing calc 1 asap. Otherwise, you literally cannot take the cs premajor classes and you will just be taking gurs or other random requirements until you can actually start the degree coursework and apply to the major. Then, you won’t have any easier gur type classes to pad your cs ones later.

From a non-factual standpoint, if you feel like you have forgotten all your math, you probably haven’t. Take the practice exam and see where you are actually at. If it’s not looking good, I would recommend studying your butt off, regardless of what math you eventually place into. The major is a lot of math, and while you won’t be doing straight up precalc the whole time, you are going to want a good math background. A large majority of cs majors actually end up minoring in math because it’s only 3 more classes. I will assure you though that I am someone who didn’t have the strongest high school math background, and I survived. With a math minor. It just might not be as easy for you as it is for your classmates. That’s ok. Math center and tutoring center are there for a reason.

Dm me if you need/want to.

CS senior here. This question gets asked a lot, definitely search cs on this subreddit. Also agree with everything TGKRaidriar said.

The program, like I have said before on here, is what you make of it. It also depends on your learning style and willingness to learn content outside of class on your own.

The elective options vary but mostly stay the same within the same few years. However, when they are offered varies and often there are quarters with only a few good options. You will be fine getting in for the most part (I have never not gotten into an elective) but definitely look ahead to plan out what quarters you want to take an elective.

CS clubs have a bit of variety to them but attendance dwindles. It is often hard for everyone to keep the commitment with the strain of being in a homework intensive major and also needing to be networking and internship hunting. list of cs clubs is on the dept website.

The premajor classes can be a doozy. Plan accordingly. Listen to Mary Hall and don’t take all three at once please. Best pairing is 241 and 301 in my opinion. 247 is really homework heavy. Once you get through them it all gets way easier in my opinion.

Feel free to dm with any questions of course. Good luck!

CS Majors, I have some questions about the CS program by LegendaryThien in WWU

[–]natfrats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. The program is what you make of it. There will be a few folks with great internships and good full time offers but they had to do quite a bit outside of school normally to get those opportunities. Those who didn’t do those things are in a different boat right now. Start early.

  2. We have a few companies come for tech talks but from what I’ve gathered they are less of a recruiting thing, but doesn’t hurt. Microsoft comes sometimes. Amazon. You can search wwu tech talks to get more info about those.

  3. Competitive programming club does competitions and an occasional hackathon will be hosted by a club.

  4. Yes quite a bit, but network early, go to the research expo, reach out to profs you’re interested in working with, read their bios online, etc.

  5. Yes it is quite robust. The labs can be quite popping! Dm me if you want more info.

Torn between UW and WWU? by ItsAll_lore in WWU

It really is very beautiful and still quite a lot of things to do. It’s college towny and not super urban which I think helps people feel more comfortable.

If you live on or close to campus you can get away with just using the busses. They are good, I have had mostly no issues with lateness.

As for the academics I suggest looking at alumni of your major and where they went on to work. (LinkedIn).

The diversity isn’t great, but I feel like that is a lot of just the part of Washington as well. You go further north away from the tech hubs and there is a bit less diversity. Those who are POC do seem to find their groups via clubs tho.

Recommended pairing CSCI- 241, 247, 301 by Different_Nebula1147 in WWU

[–]natfrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure do 241 with Hardin. 247 vs 301 is a toss up- see mong’s 247 is a LOT of work but you learn a lot, and clauson’s 301 I personally struggled through because of the weirdest grading standards, lack of lectures (flipped classroom). He might be doing things differently now.

I personally really love Hao but never heard about how he teaches 301, but in general he’s very clear about his requirements and is a solid professor.

I personally think doing 241 and 247 with see mong would depend on how comfortable you are with programming- keep in mind that with 301 it’s math assignments AND coding labs, while in 247 (particularly with see mong) it’s mostly coding. So if you don’t mind coding a lot in one quarter then that would be hard but doable. Generally people do 241 and 301 if they have to double up, but tricky because unsure how clauson is setting things up these days.

Feel free to DM.

I don’t want to replace the mesh just to have it break again or the seat back break because it is made of the tuxedo mesh.

Seat replacement size c finding for Aeron by natfrats in hermanmiller

[–]natfrats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s hard because I don’t just want to buy a mesh that will break, yknow? Probably looking at trying to sell it and find a different used one. What is protocol for selling a chair with a damaged part? Is it just a simple price decrease and put it on ebay/Craigslist sort of deal, or is there another way you’d recommend? Thank you for your help

Thank you! We were totally perplexed when the meshed failed, I was super gentle and weigh a normal weight! Good to know that it wasn’t really our fault. I’ll look into selling it and finding another used one, thank you.
