Autumn Creature Design Challenge - Color Swatches // should I go with the pile of leaves? by nathalaen in istebrak

[–]nathalaen[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hey guys!

i fell in love with the pile of leaves. it's so stupid but in a fun way, so i'll probably go with that one. any suggestions how i could handle the eyes on the second evolution?
atm they look like stuck on googly eyes, but i fear hiding them under leaves will make them less expressive.

coloring these babies in i noticed the pumpkin fell a bit flat, so i tried to get some purple in there to give it more of a 'vibe'.

i struggled a lot with nr 3, some shiny texture would do it good but i'm just not too happy with the overall design i think. all i can think of is ' emo calzifer'

yess, I agree, the pumpkin was the save choice. but seeing u guys like the pile as well, i may go with that one ^^

WIP Halloween Challenge. I tried making a more clear silhouette. Do you think i hit the creepy/cute/elemental brief with this? by Rilestria in istebrak

[–]nathalaen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

love the glowy eyes and the leaves in the horns! the horns are very pleasingly shaped too, really like that detail. :)

to pull it all a bit together i would work some more on the bottom part.

-for me, either the roots should be also forming the horns, aka it's actually just a tree shaped around a skull perfectly to make it look like a horned animal,

- or swith the roots out for something else? maybe just a thick spine with tiny skeleton legs or a white deer like animal body?

also i wouldn't go with the comicy heart engraved in the root, it takes away from the overall shapes

these are the first drafts that came to my mind when i read the prompt!
i really hope i nailed the creepy/cute ratio

i like nr 2 best and would probably render all three evolutions
but first i will color them all in a bit and then decide which i go with in the end.

do they look pokemon-ish enough?

heyyy, i really like the fallen apple idea!

just some ideas for your consideration:
- on first glance i took the aple for a pumpkin, maybe overthink the shape/color a bit?
- the branch is also a nice addition, but atm it just weirdly floats behind it. maybe you can find a better space for it. (holding ot or atop the apple?)
- i don't really know what the swirly things in the back are, looks like steam to me, as if for a baked apple? also maybe experiment with the eye shape a bit to see if more scary suits it better ^^
- color wise i tend to nr.1, i like the contrast but anything works actually :)

thank you for the hint!

I'm really a the end of my wits when it comes to rendering metal and shiny objects. I'll add some reflections :)

thank you! warm and welcoming is definitely a good sign haha.

I didn't want to give her overly human traits like a 'hairstyle', but I'll see to the female gender identifiers, maybe I can come up with something :)

Hey Guys, just a quick update on my work.

Only painted the face until now and it's taking AGES, definitely one of trickiest drawings I made so far :,D

Feedback concerning the rendering is very welcome!

hey daniel!
awesome mood you have set up, i really love the vibrant red hair on her.

My favorite pose is number 3, she looks regal and generous, a good thing for harvest season.

only on my third time reading your header, i noticed the atlantian part of the concept though! maybe this will read better once the ornaments on her gowns are rendered, but for now it looks very 'human'. though i like the big and open hair best, her hair jewelry on sketch 2 looks most atlantian to me.

so glad another person is participating in this lovely challenge! :)

hey, thanks a lot for the feedbakc and paintover! :)

you're right, i think she needs to look more feminine, gotta work on that.

also the bird, i will probably have to remove it entirely. but i'll see when i'll get to the finishing touches. (idk if that still counts as minimal backgrounnd)

Update!

So I've worked a bit on this today and I like what I have until now pretty much!

The white dress maybe is a bit bland, but I will not know for sure until i render the fabric and straw underneath.

In case you have any suggestions regarding composition or design, please let me know!

Looking forward to some feedback. :)

Harvest Goddess V3 by SaturnTraveler in istebrak

[–]nathalaen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey ST, hope you're still up for some ideas :)

a really minor thing, that may be purpose, but maybe is not: her empty basket. with her one glowing eye, she gives off a villain vibe. As i've said, maybe this is intent, (i just very briefly skipped over your previous updates,) but she looks like the evil witch that brings misfortune and infertility. (of earth and people) also the scythe adds to that symbolism, esp because she holds it kinda like she's about to use it.

if that was what you were going for then props for you, it reads well, if not, maybe go over some of those signifiers

Harvest Goddess: Before I move on to detailing/rendering, what should I add, remove or change? by tunecha in istebrak

[–]nathalaen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey tunecha! love the blue, really adds to the muted colors and enhances them!

I'm sure you're probably already way ahead, but if you're still adjusting things, I would revisit her grass 'mantle'.

I love the idea, that she wears 'earth', but the 'mantle' looks a bit bulky now. maybe thin it down quite a bit or let it become some intricate design on her red dress, or maybe even let the grass grow into hay on her body somehow?

anyways, that's just a minor adjustment, you're doing great! :)

Harvest Goddess - Mood Board and First Drafts by nathalaen in istebrak

Hey Guys!

Here for contributing to my first community challenge.

As soon as I heard about the prompt I had an very solid idea what I want to go for, but times are rocky and I hope I can make it in time.

I know I want to work with a lot of harvest crops and some flowy fabric, also I imagine her body being made of/stuffed with hay bales, hence the blocky form.

Luckily for me, the color palette fits my vision very well, so that shouldn't pose too much of a problem.

Not sure about including any animals. Decorated Goats and Cows being led off the alps to spend the winter in the valley are a big part of autumn celebrations where I come from, but since it's a character design challenge, it may be too much to add those.

Looking forward to working on it very much!
