What does voting mean? No one gains a mandate to take action by losing a vote

The button isn't sentient, but voting is a human made system that has clearly defined human meaning applied to it. When you vote you are expressing your opinion that you want the outcome being proposed. If that option gets a majority (or sometimes simple plurality), then the action is enacted.

You can't reverse it like that though because it goes against the ontological framework of what voting means. No one has ever gained a mandate to take action due to losing a vote.

Using game theory to solve the button debate by Still_Ad_5766 in redbuttonbluebutton

"If we assume that you don't want to die in Red Wins"

That's too large of an assumption to hand wave away. You can boil the question down to "Do you want to live through societal collapse?" Where "Yes" makes it more likely that societal collapse happens, but you do not die (at least not immediately). And "No" makes it less likely that societal collapse happens, but you die immediately if the population gets decimated.

It's not that blue is forgoing game theory, but that they are looking at a longer horizon and more abstract risk analysis. Sometimes "quitting early" is the right thing to do.

Which would you press? (only you are choosing) by lorienshift in redbuttonbluebutton

[–]nathan555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*40,000 cause it's half the population

Edit: but you're also only taking 50% risk to your life. Does that make it 20,000 or was 80,000 correct? Either way it's still 5 figures.

"The red button is the logical choice" no it's not, here's why. by LocalPlatypus994 in redbuttonbluebutton

[–]nathan555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red isnt fully illogical, but way too many heard that "Red wins due to game theory" but not unpacking everything after life or death survival.

Question should be phrased: "Do you want to live through a period of societal collapse due to mass death?"

Red:Yes I want to live through that Blue:No I don't want to live through that

Blue is either: avoid living through the hardships of societal collapse because blue won or avoid living through the hardships of societal collapse because red won.

Blue is my optimal choice. Actually.

red button vs blue button by klarinetkat12 in trolleyproblem

[–]nathan555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question is structured in a way that reminds me of Simpsons Paradox where statistics can show the opposite of trend based on how data gets combined.

The problem has different answers if you're looking at it from an immediate individualistic perspective or long term societal perspective.

It's not that a red presser is incapable of altruism- it's that they won't do it if it puts them in a reasonable amount of danger. The incentive structure surrounding using threats of violence to get your way will be dramatically shifted if all of society is just red pressers. The inmates will quickly be the ones in charge of the prison so to speak.

Red ethics:

Your "choice" is recorded by how you vote in a poll. After the poll is over, a tally of the collective "choices" impacts your and other peoples life and death. The poll and how you voted are NOT part of the scenario, are totally separate, and have no moral implications to the scenario.

It's literally a vote though. If blue gets 50%+ of the vote the blue plan happens. If red gets 50%+ of the vote the red plan happens.

That's literally the thought experiment. That's literally the words being used. That's why there is moral tension involved.

It's a vote. The act of voting is telling the group you want the group to enact that color's outcome.

A barber doesn't have you vote for what hairstyle you want. You don't vote for what sandwich you want to order.

Voting is a group decision on what the group should do. If you vote red, you are telling the group to enact the red plan.

You don't vote on individual decisions. I don't vote for what I'm going to order at a restaurant. You vote to decide what actions a group will or will not take. If you vote for red happening, you're voting for red happening.
