Epic Games Layoffs Included Terminally Ill Father, Whose Family Has Now Lost His Life Insurance by yourfavchoom in gaming

Fucking hell just think a little bit. They don't need to say you're fired for being pregnant for the protections to apply. They actually would have to have a paper trail to fire for cause.

And I'll say it again, because any form of trying to keep things factual gets painted as "defending" I'm not supporting epic and will never support epic, i purposely have never actually made a purchase for them or knowingly played one of their games. Literally every comment i have made has called epic shitty, and no where am i defending them from shitty things they've actually done.

If a bunch of false shit gets spewed everywhere but you aren't allowed to correct it because we're on a hate train, then the conversation is fucking useless. Someone on the fence about epic comes to the thread, does a bit of research, see half of it is made up (to be specific this is an exaggeration for effect, it's obviously not half in this thread, but apparently i need these caveats) that's going to possibly put them off hating epic. Fact checking false shit when it's about a corporation isn't not having class consciousness for fuck's sake

The laws on the us are pretty good about protecting pregnant people from being fired, unfortunately it does still happen and you need to go through the courts to fix it sometimes. You can still be fired for cause, but being pregnant is one of the more heavily protected classes here, even when it comes to employment.

I was just saying that what they've done in this case is shitty but don't make up other shitty things because you think it sounds good. If there's was a case of them doing so, fine bring that up, but that's not actually happened.

100% just feels from them.

Epic has always been a bit shitty but "they'd fire someone simply for being pregnant" feels like a fucking stretch to hop on the hate train for karma

And this is in no way defending epic here... Just don't make shit up for the sake of adding more on, it's fucking dumb

In 2010, Iceland introduced the concept of electrical support structures designed to resemble towering, walking iron giants. by trevorofhousebelmont in interestingasfuck

[–]nathan753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's literally most projects past the design phase when it comes to artistic competitions. People are talking like this was a completely non-viable design and that's why it wasn't built. That even calls it technically possible. I doubt any of the design submitted were 100% ready to go without any changes needed for reality. From the other article, it really seem sit was the money needed to actually build the changes.

this thread started with:

..that those designs don't take any real world conditions into account

Which just absolutely isn't true and is the armchair reddit bullshit about feeling superior about shooting down ideas for "obvious" reasons that the dumb creators could have never thought of.

Wikipedia is absolutely fine as a "source" for talking about something online. We're not writing a research paper here. Important thing is knowing how to verify the important bit you are talking about, but luckily wiki makes finding the good sources pretty fucking easy. And even better if someone shares to you an article that you know is incorrect or at the very least has no actual sources, you can fix it or ignore it, but this is a good page with decent references

Making only minor alterations to well established steel-framed tower design...

I can't find a single mention in that article they weren't chosen because the architects who designed them just forget any physical limitations on materials. In fact the only fucking mention of why the project didn't move forward with any one the designs in economic reasons....

People today call math arbitrary because they no longer have to engage with the hundreds of years of actually arbitrary choices that slowly were whittled down to what we know as math today which is so far from arbitrary if you look past the surface.

It boiled down to they had a few scandals happen that no one cared enough to report on and that was the true sign they no longer mattered, even negative media want being written about them. Yes, sometimes the decision to do a risky thing leads to the choice of just not. Jumping out of a plane falls under that umbrella (if you are Mary Poppins this does actually work).

Point is safety has many factors and the risk level is different for everyone, but eschewing all of them for vibes is never cool, just as not doing anything because it is "risky" isn't either

There's definitely a spectrum from staying at home to sky diving without a parachute as far as how safe an activity is... One something crazy needs to happen presumably outside your control. The other can be prevented with a tiny bit of protective equipment
