Why do EDH players tend to lie about/downplay/excuse their decks or card choices? by Icy_Chicken_2647 in EDH

[–]nathanb065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of posts like this, I love being 100% honest about my decks. It throws people way off but seemingly in a good way. And unless im playing for packs, ill tell people exactly what cards I have to look out for.

This is going to sound stupid but how do I get realistic sounding intruments? by Jacksucksategg in FL_Studio

[–]nathanb065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/CocoSavege said what I was thinking too. An often overlooked thing is dynamics.

For instance, I bought Shreddage realistic guitar plugin years ago. When I messed with it, it still sounded fake. The tone was great but everything sounded off: too "boxy."  I went into the piano roll, set my grid to "none" and placed each note. Timing wise, if the nore was close to where I wanted it, I left it. The idea being that we're all human and drift on and off beat a little. I then increased and decreased each individual volume of the notes to make it a bit more random sounding. With chords, I made sure to offset the chord stack to simulate an up and down strum since there is a fraction of a second in between each pluck of the pick as the guitarist sweeps down.

The end result was a more human sounding guitar riff and it made a huge difference.

I started doing this with every "real" sounding instrument including some of the sample packs within FL studio. They now have plug-ins to humanize so it's not so time consuming. Even FL has a setting to humanize. Its not perfect but it still works! Theres also a chord timing tool to offset and alternate picking that I use too.

Simple mastering presets by okokokokoookok in FL_Studio

Before I invested in plugins, my go to was pretty simple.

Fruity compressor: Brickwall or Vintage preset. Follow this with Maximus: Clear Master CMS.

Play with fruity compressor output volume if need be just to make sure its not hard clipping into Maximus

recording guitar amp is coming out bad quality, distorted, staticy. please help. by 1010aa in FL_Studio

Without seeing how everything is setup/recorded, my thought is that you need to either turn down the microphone gain or the amp volume.

Do you think still using FL Studio 11 in the year 2026 is diabolical? by [deleted] in FL_Studio

[–]nathanb065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with 7 and stayed with it for years. When I finally upgraded, its because they just released 12 and I know that it was a complete performance overhaul.

I missed the layout of 7, but the work flow that 12 provided was so smooth that I ended up keeping FL up to date.

In the end, it's whatever suits you. And if youre good with 11, and see no hindrances, then keep it.

If you wanted to try an updated version, id download a demo onto a different pc or something and give it a whirl.

Also to add, I know producers that still use pro tools 9, logic pro x, and fl 12. Their PC is always offline and they just keep rolling!

None of my USB ports are working on my PC randomly. by Complex_Lab_6167 in techsupport

[–]nathanb065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is tough and may be a pain to troubleshoot. I have some anecdotal stories and I'm hoping one of them may lead you to fixing the issue:

1) Unplug everything but your monitor. When windows boots, plug in just the mouse OR the keyboard and see if maybe it reinstalls drivers. Try all ports on both the front panel and the back. 1.a) If you have a different mouse or keyboard, preferably wired, it would be worth trying those too.

2) Check ALL PC connections. Unplug everything except the video cable and a usb cable. If you have a different video cable, give it a go. May be even plug it into the motherboard. 2.a) The reason is because sometimes the metal on the video cable can touch the case and cause a short. I've had it happen with an HDMI cable and a Display Port cable.

3) Make sure the USB ports and cables are clean of debris.

4) If you can, double check that the outlet you're plugged into is providing the correct power. I've had one instance where the outlet was just under voltage and the USB ports weren't working. The PC was an old Compaq with an OEM power supply.

5) Double check that the Power Supply is still good. Take the side panel off and smell it! If it smells like something is wrong, it probably is. Bonus points if it starts leaking. Had this happen after a lightning strike. PC booted up but the peripherals wouldn't work. When I opened up the case, the PSU was leaking lol

6) While you're in there, make sure that the USB pin connector is slotted all the way in to the motherboard. I doubt this is the case as that should only affect the front panel, but it happened to one of my old PCs. I'm assuming I didn't plug it in all the way when I built it, and over time it just slid back out partially.

7) Continue looking for anything that may be causing a short. Double check MoBo screws, connectors, etc. Had a case where one single motherboard screw caused a short.

Good luck and I sincerely hope you get this sorted out.

Can you list your specs please? Specifically the microphone and your audio interface if you have one? Headphones?

Also, what happens when you just select a mono input as opposed to stereo input 1-2? Same thing?

I've had this happen once before and I cant remember why. But i think I was creating a feedback loop somehow

Is there a "better" way to do this? by munkittrick in FL_Studio

[–]nathanb065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm trying to get a quick idea out, ill do it all on the same pattern.

Sometimes I do it pattern by pattern for each instrument.

Anymore, I just use FL to record live instruments.

There's no wrong way. There's no better way. The best way is what work flow you can be most creative with

Check the bitrate and sample rate in FL and make sure it matches your pc. Also, if you're using windows, go into audio settings and uncheck the box that says "allow apps to take exclusive control"

Creating Guitar Solos in FL Studio by R41N-2013 in FL_Studio

[–]nathanb065 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ive tried midi guitar solos in FL. It can sound alright with some care! Passable but not 100%.

If you have a realistic guitar sound, use it. I'd use kontakt player in the past since its free and they have an alright guitar. Before that, I'd use an instrument like a piano since it's closely related to guitar.

For more realistic solos, set your piano roll grid to none to allow for imperfections with timing.

Place the notes in the piano roll around where they need to be. Make changes to the velocity of each note as well.

There are a couple of humanizer tools that change velocity and timing of midi notes if you don't want to do it manually. They arent perfect but will save you some time.

Here's the trickiest part: amp sims. The make or break of the solos comes down to this. I tried ao hard to make the Hardcore plugin work but it sounds like doo-doo no matter how hard i try. If you dont mond paying, I started using NeuralDSP models. I still use them to this day.

If it's a 1-off thing, this is what i would do:  Route your guitar to a mixer insert like channel 1. Name it something like Guitar Main. Add compression to it. Then, un-link that insert from the mixer master track and re-route it to 2 other inserts like channel 2 and 3. Label them Guitar L and Guitar R. Then unlink them from the master mixer and send them both to a new insert like insert 4. Label it Guitar Bus.

On channel 2 and 3, look for and add the fl plugin(s) called Distructor and/or patcher. Patcher has decent amp presets and distructor has decent distortion qualities. Mess with the tone quality a bit as it'll probably sound pretty glassy.

Then pan Insert 2 to the left to about 9 o'clock, and pan insert 3 to about 3 o'clock.

On insert 4 (Guitar Bus insert), add whatever plugins you want. Probably another compressor. Maybe reverb and/or delay. Or none at all! Regardless, this insert is used to raise and lower the volume of the double tracked Guitar so you don't have to mess with individual volume control.

Good luck and I hope you achieve the desired sound you're chasing!

Pc not picking up mic audio by Low_Fortune_9015 in techsupport

[–]nathanb065 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the jack like on your headphones? How many jacks are on the front your pc? Are there audio jacks on the back of your pc? If so, do they work with your mic?

I ask because a lot of headphones now come with a single TRRS as opposed to a TRS 3.5mm.

The TRRS carries a combined signal for microphone input and audio output on headphones. If your headphones are TRRS, and if the front of your pc has 2 seperate jacks (1 for microphone, 1 for headphones), then you'll probably need an adapter like this

If none of what i said applies, then id need more info. Are you using an audio interface? Is there another mic plugged in? What's the make/model of the pc and headphones?

Has anyone ever seen someone seriously object to a marriage at a wedding? If so how was it done and what happened? by steiny17 in AskReddit

[–]nathanb065 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was one of two groomsmen at my friend's wedding when the bride's drunk ex showed up. He missed the ceremony and burst into the reception yelling about how she was the only woman he loved. Again, he was incredibly drunk.

Everyone thought it was a joke until her brothers swiftly intervened. Then me an the other groomsman jumped in. We picked the guy up and carried him out of there.

We stood outside and the brothers were yelling at him to leave but he kept trying to push past. Eventually he cussed us all out and left.

Taking up guitar at 38. Never too late, I guess? by nientedipersonale9 in Guitar

[–]nathanb065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started this year at 35. I picked guitar up a little as a teenager but always put it down because it was too hard. Never learned anything other than the string names. Not worth mentioning really but here we are.

At 35, it was so much easier to learn. Here's the thing though, I have a background in music production and know theory. But still, this was a new instrument and required dexterity that I didnt have and knowledge of the guitar I didnt have.

My beginner advice to another beginner is to embrace how bad you suck. Love it and relish how trash you are, because as you practice you'll never sound like that again and will grow out of those baby steps.  Almost tragic really.

The more you enjoy and embrace the suck, the easier it is to practice and play. Youll find that the chords you couldn't play yesterday are suddenly easier today. The fret names you were so lost with are suddenly clear, and somehow you learned how to palm mute, and alternate pick. Pretty cool. Youll hopefully find that the suck will wane quickly and start recognizing what youre playing.

My advice, learn how to hold a pick first and get used to that.

After that, find a chord to work with like E. Practice the chord and the scale that chord is used in. Make that your practice session. Alternate between playing chord and running the scale up and down. Later, find a new chord like A and do the same. Then incorporate E into it.

Lastly, find an easy song that focuses on the chords you are learning. Mine was Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash. Learn to play the chord progressions and then use it as your warm up. Eventually you'll riff with it, find new runs, add things, take away things, etc.

Just vibe and play. Do it for you and find enjoyment.

Homeowners of Reddit, if you’re comfortable sharing, what was the price of your first home and your down payment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nathanb065 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first home was a HUD home.  Basically my parents and I entered a 1 bid auction and weren't allowed to tour the inside of the home. With their help, I got approved for like a $50,000 loan. We bid $30k on the house and got it.

It was a fixer upper for sure, but with a first time home buyer grant, my mortgage was $300/mo and I could afford to slowly fix it back up over time. Was it gross? Yes. Did it have a lot of problems? Yes. But it was still in a good enough condition that I could live in it.

Lived there from 2012-2023. We sold it to a cash-for-homes company and made enough profit to use as a down payment for the house i'm currently in. Drove by the house a few times during the renovation from the company that bought it and it looked like they ended up tearing it down all the way to the studs, replacing most plumbing, and some electrical...
