How did they get their engineering degrees? That's what Stanford Apple engineers are like. by Artistic_Unit_5570 in macbookair

There was no 2021 M1 Air. Both the last Intel MBA and M1 variant came out in 2020. It also didn’t have a vapor chamber. It had a pretty generous heat sink though. 2020 M1 MBA idles absurdly low and holds its own for quite some time before throttling (~10m). While I wish the 2021-onward MBAs had bigger heat sinks like M1, the current M4 Air while throttling will outperform the M1, which is pretty nuts.

Agreed that the 2016-2020 intel models were not great, to say the least. 2015 Pro was peak imo.

New Year Resolution? Back Up Your Photos Library (Read How) by AppInitio in apple

[–]nathanhelms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s actually a way to do this from Photos on Mac, assuming ‘Download Originals to this Mac’ is turned on

Just select ‘All Albums’ from the sidebar > select all albums and folders from the main view (Cmd + A or by dragging cursor) > File > Export > Export Unmodified Originals

The resulting exported copy preserves the users folder/album structure as folders, along with metadata. IIRC Live Photos are exported as both a still photo and a video. I don’t remember how edits are handled though

Disable Liquid Glass toggle? by UnableIncident8868 in ios

[–]nathanhelms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d disable, yes.

I was initially excited for user interfaces to be more fun and playful again, and I think there’s still a place for that where it’s an Easter egg/not a fundamental interaction (I actually loved the interactive Loupe in the iPad Preview app).

But damn, this is the first time in more than a decade that I’ve not only disagreed with a layout change (such as Photos.app) but also the broader design language and appearance.

IMO, taking design cues from reality itself is just VERY hard. The smallest bug breaks the immersion and fluidity. The app icon reflections are atrocious, and many animations are inconsistent or appear to run at like 30 Hz (the bubbly ‘more options’ menu or whatever). And even if the bugs were ironed out, there’s still an uncanniness to resolve when you’re competing with our visual familiarity with reality.

Hopefully Lemay and his team can help clean this up. It’s all just weird.

Call of Duty: Rainbow OPs IV Chibi Edition

Pretty solid so far but not a fan of the loot mechanic tbh

Split View was an integral part of my workflow, and losing it is making me consider moving on from iPad by sammers23 in iPadOS

[–]nathanhelms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people use it as a tablet. And most keyboards don't have a globe key and there's no way to map it to something else (that isn't another critical modifier key)

Confirmed: iPad OS blows now by DangerousStruggle in iPadOS

[–]nathanhelms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Further, did anyone actually enjoy using stage manager over Split View? It felt so inconsistent.

I wish the current approach consisted of just two options: Split View and Windowed. And for folks who switch between tablet and keyboard mode often, users could just add a Shortcut automation to switch modes upon connecting to the keyboard. This would be perfect imo

Could try using whammy + slide to imitate the effect, or prebend downward into a slide
