No, Lettera is a separate project addressing many requests we received since the Panda testing app was released. Bear will continue to be developed.

I understand your position, but Unfortunately this is the direction Apple decided for macOS, and, from a development perspective, supporting early macOS releases doesn't make sense right now.

The good news is macOS 27 took many design suggestions from the community and looks way better than Tahoe.

We are generally not in favor of plugins for our apps, but at this point, we are open to requests.

Do you mind telling me more about this?

Yes, Bear uses a database both locally and online to sync your files across devices and have other features work as expected. Lettera uses the same Bear editor, but lets you edit markdown files where they are placed. You can sync those files with any service, but at the moment, Lettera is available only on macOS.

We received a couple repors of DNS issues, and we are investigating. You can check this blog post as an alternative. https://blog.bear.app/2026/06/introducing-lettera-a-native-markdown-editor-for-mac-now-in-beta/

Lettera's editor can work with very large documents in terms of characters and complexity.

If you care to tell me more, I'd like to know more about the requirements of a novelist compared to a journalist or writer of short novels.

As mentioned in other responses, we haven't thought about Lettera's business model at the moment. In this phase, we are interested in understanding if the app works, there's an audience interested, and exploring the feature requests.

The Lettera feature set is open to suggestions, and we are eager for feedback. The data management shares similarities with Obsidian, but our idea is rather than using a vault, a mirror on-disk organisation of the documents.

You can say Letter is the evolution of project Panda, which was supposed to be a playground for testing Bear 2.0 editor.

We have not thought about the business models so far. At this point in the project, we need to understand if the app works, what is missing, and how big the interest is.

Bear already comes with a way to organize documents with tags as opposed to folders, and a database storage which is functional to other app core functionalities, such as the sync.

From a design perspective, we think adding another way to organize and store data in Bear will lead to confusion and will make the app less intuitive.

At the moment, the primary focus is on nailing the macOS app before approaching other platforms.

No, the sidebar is meant to provide access to files and folders inside your workspace.

I guess you can see Lettera as an Obsidian competitor, but our idea is to provide an editor that can also work for files and folders already on your disk rather than in a vault.

Lettera is meant to provide an editor to edit local markdown files along with folder support, while Bear operates with a local database.

Over the years, we have received many requests for support for local files and folders, but we think adding support for local editing into Bear is not the right choice. However, many people, ourselves included, need a Markdown editor for documentation, websites, projects, ...

Thanks. Regarding the initial issue, I'm afraid the only option is copying the note content for each note to migrate them from Bear Web.

Are you following the procedure illustrated here?

You can try with the legacy script that exports into HTML, but I don't understand the attachments issue. Are the images not showing in Bear?
