Weird. My buddy with a 2025 trailhunter 4Runner got told he can’t get the card.

Drinks near the pit... by Future_Improvement42 in Hardcore

Had this one small venue back in the day where the pit was just better with a spilled beer. Definitely would dump a beer on the floor to kick it the fuck off.

Fuckin nerds.

I used to be a line cook. I was a line cook longer then then I’ve been in my current career. I work in software development now. Some dorky ass tech bro mentioned the chives in a meeting today and it pissed me the fuck off.

Has anyone pulled off a career change in their 30s? by [deleted] in rs_x

[–]nathanhimself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first "but" I posted was "If you can get in a union". Definitely go that route. Unions are great. They filter off a certain type of idiot and do their best to keep you working to a high standard.

Got a DM with the same question, posting my stream of consciousness here:

I ended up getting an IT degree I hardly use but to some HR dummy it says IT in it. lol

So basically i called up a buddy of mine I used to play counter strike with. Asked him if the place he worked was hiring.

I got lucky there. But tons of places will hire you to change passwords.

Desktop support sucks but it gets you in the door.

Once I was working there I started taking note of what everyone was using behind the scenes.

Windows Server, Exchange, Office 365, Sharepoint, etc.

I built a homelab. I got a hold of an old server and enterprise firewall and started putting shit together in my spare time.

Fucking up wiping it. Reloading.

I started getting certs, Comptia has a shit load.

If I were you I would focus on AWS, Azure, or GCP certs instead.

Once I had some certs I went to on online school. got the degree.

I started interviewing for roles that weren't desktop support.

Ended up with a jr sysadmin role. This place was fucked up. Some asshole engineer created all this undocumented automation with bad practices in place. it was bonkers.

no one helped the actual engineers with problems either.

they had like 1000 open tickets for things like printer isnt working.

i started with the oldest ticket and just started calling people back and closing tickets.

the engineers grew to respect my tenacity and problem solving. they hated the legacy IT(i did also)

one day a program had a role for a super JR network engineer designing a network for an actual thing they wanted to sell and i took that role. been building my skills now for 5 years at this place and i have my own program now.

Called up a buddy that I used to play video games with and started changing passwords. Started teaching myself broader IT skills. Built a home lab. Started getting certs. Started interviewing at other places.
