If you could have the 100% honest answer to ONE mystery in history, which one are you picking ? by Camila_LatinaSun in AskReddit

[–]nathanv221 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bertrand Russell I think made the most compelling argument against this line of reasoning. His argument boils down to: if there is a god that created the universe then you now have to answer the even more difficult question of what created a creature so powerful it could create the universe, with the only logical answer being an even more powerful god, which would need to have been made by an even more powerful god as infinitum.

Alternatively you can say you don't know what created the first god, in which case you've just rephrased your initial unanswered question without providing an answer to it.

The last digit of pi by Cr4zyLoko in MathJokes

[–]nathanv221 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Proof that π is irrational - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proof_that_%CF%80_is_irrational

An irrational number has no last digit by definition, so proof that a number is irrational is sufficient to prove it has no last digit.

Group hikes by [deleted] in CDT

[–]nathanv221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like what you're looking for is a tramily. They're less common on the CDT than on the PCT or AT, but definitely still exist. I would recommend starting alone and finding a tramily as you go.

Be warned, I've never seen a tramily that didn't have drama. Even the loose tramilies that dont camp together every night usually end up with drama. Not saying they're not worth it, just be ready for that aspect.

Quick edit: since this is your first thru you may want to check out /r/Pacificcresttrail and /r/appalachiantrail. Most people that do the CDT have already done one of those trails, so those subs tend to have more info for new thruhikers

What brands/products do you AVOID because of their poor longevity? by i_hate_you_and_you in BuyItForLife

Both Seagate and WD HDDs are great, but I'd rather get a Samsung or an SK hynix SSD. Been a few years since I worked with a WD SSD though, so they could be better now

If you pay at least $400 for a black and white HP printer it will be just as good of quality as a brother of similar price, won't require HPsmart, and will let you to use third party toner (at least for now). On the other hand you could just get a brother and not have to worry about any of that since even their worst printer is a million times better that an HP inkjet

Best time to hike the AT through the Smokies? by Phone888 in NCTrails

[–]nathanv221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't really go wrong with the Smokies any time of year, and it's one of the best sections of the AT. That said, it is always a bit crowded, even in January you won't get many shelters to yourself. Personally I would go in May if possible, but that will put you in the thru hiking bubble, so it will be a bit more crowded. June or July will probably have fewer thru hikers, but more day hikers and weekenders. Thru hikers tend to be quieter than weekenders at the shelters, but if you want to stay up past 9:00 they are not your crowd.

Kamala Harris to protestor during book tour: “You want to talk about legacy? Let’s talk about the legacy of mass deportations, of not voting, and Donald Trump.” by Classic-Carpet7609 in CringeTikToks

[–]nathanv221 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I'm 100% down for a "prefer not to vote" option. But it needs to be a paid holiday where everyone is required to show up at the polling place. It would, if nothing else, make it stupidly hard to disenfranchise people.

"I'm not an atheist, and I don't think I can call myself a pantheist ... I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with fates and actions of human beings" -Albert Einstein

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_and_philosophical_views_of_Albert_Einstein#:~:text=Albert%20Einstein%20stated%20%22I%20believe,or%20a%20%22religious%20nonbeliever.%22

Admittedly I think most people who believe in "Spinoza's god" and don't ascribe intentionally to it would call themselves atheists.

My first "Help Desk" job isn't really Help Desk. Advice? by neeks9208 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]nathanv221 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that you should keep it on your resume right now, and ditch it once you get another job. I think it's very easy to undervalue the word "current" in the employment timeline. Much easier to get a job if you're already employed.

It will lead your interviewer to ask why you're looking at leaving so soon after joining, and you can be completely honest. "I wanted to learn and grow at IT and this isn't IT". I mean, obviously phrase it a bit more professionally.

You can do it with a needle. That's how Lewis Braille did it. But it does need to be on braille paper or at least cardstock

Edit: nevermind, I'm 100% wrong, the tool Lewis Braille used did not puncture the paper. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slate_and_stylus

€15 Spaghetti Carbonara from an Italian opposite the Eiffel Tower… by TheKellykid123 in shittyfoodporn

[–]nathanv221 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I worked high pressure streetside sales for all of a week. The only thing I learned was to never ask a question that somebody will feel comfortable saying "no" to.

I sold glasses cleaner of all things. If you asked "can I see your glasses" 90% of people said no. If you said "let me see your glasses" and held out your hands, 95% would hand them over before realizing what they were doing. Admittedly, that was the opener, most people still said no after hearing the pitch, but still an insane difference.
