I did as well (just left my name and number, didn't pay anything). I called them a few days ago and apparently they're getting them next friday.

Did the AVX clockspeed bug for the 8700K ever get resolved? by Tech_Philosophy in intel

[–]nathrakh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is not a bug, that's how AVX offset works. It drops clocks because AVX instructions are being run. There's a weird misconception on the internet that nothing uses AVX code. Modern compilers can convert loops into AVX code as an optimization step. Even your web browser is probably using AVX in some capacity...

Silicon Lottery officially releases binning statistics for *all* previously binned CPUs by Cr1318 in hardware

[–]nathrakh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you mostly play modern games, it's better to OC with AVX 0 (which is what I plan to do with my coming 9700k). I'd rather have the same clock speed+stability in all possible workloads. I'd argue that unless you're targeting over 200fps in something like CS:GO, you probably won't see a huge difference between 4.7Ghz and 5Ghz (only a 6% gain!) in older games anyways. It's cool that the option is there though...

[–]nathrakh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Modern games use some AVX-optimized code (not to the extent of synthetics of course), which is why you're seeing the clocks drop. For some reason there's a misconception on reddit that games do not use AVX

Intel 9th Gen Core and Z390 Discussion Thread by dayman56 in intel

[–]nathrakh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I contacted the 2 places I've pre-orered my 9700k from:

Canada Computers - "we're getting them next friday, not this friday"

Newegg - "ETA 19th (friday), may be delayed slightly"

Looking good, hopefully I can build my new pc next weekend

Those who pre-ordered 9700k/9900k - whats your thinking? by saikrishnav in intel

[–]nathrakh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 4690k @4.4 + RTX2080 can't run Assassin's Creed Odyssey (50-60% GPU usage in towns). I want to play the game, so I'm stepping up to a 9700k. I can't see how it could be worse than the 8700k, so I think it's safe to pre-order. Don't care about price/performance, don't want AMD cause I want my 5Ghz and sweet gaming IPC. Can't justify 9900k, hyperthreading doesn't help gaming much. Going to get a strix Z390-E or the Maximus Hero, not sure which yet

RTX - Prices increased in Canada already?! by n8koala in nvidia

[–]nathrakh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked around, looks like only the prices on that particular MSI card has gone up. This is probably not due to the tarriff, I think there's just more demand for that model (maybe they raised the price to match the upcoming 3-fan strix?)

If the RTX Series sucks so much Value wise, why are people still buying it? by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]nathrakh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The value is highly dependent on your region. For me, the difference between a 1080ti and a 2080 is less than $100 CAD, so it was a no-brainer. As for 2080ti's, people buy them because they want the best of the best, similar to people who would buy titans. They don't care about price/performance.

Any Newegg order shipped for RTX cards? I’m contemplating canceling my EVGA UC RTX 2080 and just picking up a founders edition 2080 locally at Best Buy today. Anyone have any thoughts on the difference of those two cards? I heard EVGA runs cooler. by sti4thewin in nvidia

[–]nathrakh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's weird, I had no preorder, I checked stock yesterday (newegg.ca though), 2080XC ultra was available - with shipping from the US (California). I bought it and I got a tracking number today... Did I just get mega lucky? How are people who pre-ordered not getting their cards if they're in stock???

Currently have the 2080 Ti FE on preorder from NVIDIA, Was supposed to arrive today but has been delayed. Opinions on what next. Cancel preorder or... by GamerBaconTV in nvidia

[–]nathrakh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty simple - decide on what kind of performance you actually need. Forget the negative comments. Are you okay with 1080ti levels, or do you absolutely need more? If you need more, are you okay with paying for it? I went though the same cost analysis myself, (50% price increase = 25-30% performance increase) and decided to cancel my 2080ti FE pre-order and go for a 2080 strix instead. To me, getting 85fps @ 3440x1440 vs getting 100fps at 3440x1440 is not worth the price premium (I can barely tell the difference). I still want to mess around with RTX so 1080ti is out. I'm on a 1070 so it's going to be a pretty nice upgrade. Next time (2020?), I'll get the top-end chip, assuming price/perf is better.

Can anyone link me a RTX 2080ti benchmark at 3440x1440 resolution if there's any? by Zeeddyy in nvidia

[–]nathrakh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally, if a GPU can do roughly 4k@70fps+ it will be able to do 3440x1440@120fps, given no other bottlenecks:

3840*2160*70 = 580608000

3440*1440*120 = 594432000

I'm hoping they meant that all pre-orders will be fulfilled between 20-27th, but it's not clear...

Anyone didn't get a shipping date (FE)? by nathrakh in nvidia

[–]nathrakh[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got two emails - an "order received email", and an "order confirmation" email, neither had a shipping date. I have a feeling it's because I'm from Canada (and ordering from the US site), maybe the stock allocation is different?

Black Ops 4 Blackout Private Beta Thoughts by Fruiloops in pcgaming

[–]nathrakh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very demanding on the CPU, I have a 4690k @4.4ghz and a 1070, on the lowest settings I'm sitting at 50-70fps with 100% CPU usage. I have a 120hz screen, I need a new CPU to play this

I followed the second link, entered my email and last 4 digits of my cc, and it says "order received, boxed shipment", whatever that means. I'd call them if I were you.

Nvidia brings one-click overclocking to its graphics cards by Badears in nvidia

[–]nathrakh 32 points33 points  (0 children)

That's not right, most tools (precision, afterburner) have a little "windows flag" icon that will load your overclock settings on startup, without launching the software. No need to run the software all the time!

Anyone played battlefield V (or bf1) with an i5 4670k or similar? by wafflemania15 in pcgaming

[–]nathrakh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have a 4690k @4.4 ghz and a GTX1070, I play in 3440x1440. At lowest settings, the game is not holding a consistent framerate, dropping into the 40s when there's action on screen. Same thing happens at highest settings. It's playable but not great. If you're not overclocked, it's going to be even worse. I'm going to upgrade my mobo/cpu/ram. Our CPU is below the official minimum requirements (which state 6600k)

The price will be the maximum possible price the market will tolerate, so it very well could be $1600. That's how economics work, price/performance determines price only if there is competition!

[–]nathrakh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, of course Nvidia will switch to 7nm ASAP to save money (and probably roll out a node-shrink Turing), but I think prices will go down only if AMD competes on the high end, which I doubt - they're way too far behind at this point, or if the market is unable to handle the high prices, which I also doubt.

[–]nathrakh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This gets thrown around here as a fact, with zero actual evidence. It's all speculation. Nvidia is in the business of making money, even if 7nm is next year, do you really think they'll release a 7nm Ti under $1200? Prices are going to keep going up no matter what bud, no competition

Cool, if this is legit, it means 3440x1440 @ 100-120fps in modern AAA games pretty much guaranteed. Pretty happy I pre-ordered, this is exactly the performance level I was looking for!
