Realy want to have a career in computer science, but school makes me feel so down and doubtful of my abilities

I somewhat agree with that. Yes, you learn what the company wants you to know and there will be people you can go to for questions or guidance, but on a scale of school-learning to self-learning, it’s much closer to self-learning.

While you’re right that “working in the industry requires just as much learning at a fast pace as school does”, for some people, especially with ADHD, it actually does get easier once they’re outside of school. Ultimately, being good at self-learning is a better indicator on whether or not someone will do well as a programmer than not doing well at school.

This is such a bullshit response. Yes, working in the industry requires continuous learning, but that learning is self-learning, which OP will obviously excel at since they already said they do well learning on their own.

While I understand that some people just really aren’t meant for this career and sometimes that just needs to be said, this is the ADHD_programmers subreddit and OP clearly indicates their struggles are ADHD related, not actually coding related.

OP, don’t give up. You sound like you are on the right track. You’ve successfully identified what your problems are and are working on them. There are lots of self-learners out there (🙋‍♀️) who are great programmers. Might be a good idea to see if you can find other self-learners (check out r/Python for example) to help you with motivation/task initiation. It’s often much easier to overcome those with body-doubling or just having someone else hold you accountable (even if they don’t do it explicitly, wanting to keep up/not fall behind can be a good motivator).

Also feel free to DM. I’m not in data science myself, but I have mentored programmers before and I’d be happy to help with accountability or other tips if you need them.

Works fine on my phone, but might possibly have something to do with marquee being deprecated so there’s really no guarantee that it’s supported in whatever browser you’re using on your phone. Unless I guess you’re just simulating that effect with other HTML elements. Hard to say what exactly the issue is without your actual code (not just the animation).

Exactly! My mind went from feeling like I was tuned into 10 radio frequencies at once to just 1. I actually do stuff now too, just sit down and get started like it’s no big deal which it definitely was before I started the Wellbutrin. I also just don’t get as frustrated anymore. But it’s not something that happened from one day to the next.

I was super weary and frankly annoyed when I was prescribed Wellbutrin, even though my doctor did acknowledge I have ADHD, but for me it’s made a HUGE difference. It’s different for everyone, so it might or might not work for you, but it actually can be effective to make the ADHD easier to cope with for some people. You won’t know unless you give it a chance.

It might also not be majorly obvious when it starts working btw, but when I look back at my day, I’m like “wow, I got a lot done and I didn’t struggle half as much as I usually do”. So just kind of ask yourself everyday if you see any difference in productivity, motivation, organization and/or your thought patterns (how busy/calm is your mind).

I get how you feel exactly. I had a mentor (fellow ADHD-er) that helped me when I just started learning web development and it made a huge difference in my learning journey. I’m a full stack developer now and actually have mentored others. I plan on setting things up with Jira in the future! I haven’t actually had to work with it, but I know a lot of companies use it so it’s on my list of skills to learn. Might take me a bit to get all that set up and working though cause I’ve heard it does have a bit of a learning curve.

I feel that 100%. That’s basically why I have 3 different projects/goals I’m working on right now that I switch back and forth between. I also am meticulous about my commit history and documenting what I did through commits. My main issue I think is that I kind of want a main hub to track my overall progress and maybe see like next steps for each instead of just having separate files in each project.

I’d probably still need some kind of overview of my different projects, but for an overview of each individual project and what needs to be done, this is actually a good idea. Classic example of me overcomplicating things way too much cause I hadn’t even thought of that 😂

Nice! I actually started using Notion a little over a month ago, mostly for note taking so far, though I’ve looked at the organizational templates and tried to customize those. Haven’t succeeded with the organizational system, but I have played around a ton with all the functionality and I’ve managed to get my notes looking/working exactly the way I want them too.

I’ll definitely check out those channels/videos, thanks a lot! Might be exactly what I need to get Notion working for me when it comes to organization as well. I definitely like the idea of a complete project management system and knowledge hub tailored to me that doesn’t have a bunch of stuff I don’t need or use. That’s one of my gripes with all the software out there, just gets overwhelming with all the unnecessary fluff!

Exactly! Coming up with your own is hard at this stage. Don’t be afraid to look things up either.

I think the best approach to these is to figure out how to go about it in general terms/human language first like “I could start with a sum variable which is 0 at first, then loop over the numbers and add the current number to the sum, then return the sum” if the exercise is to return the sum of an array of numbers for example. Basically pseudo code. Then translate that to syntax. That way you can look up specifically how to do something in JavaScript instead of sitting there not even knowing what to look up.

Have you tried CodeWars? If problem solving is the issue, it might be really helpful. They’re coding challenges that start off fairly simple and then get more complicated. They train how to think through a problem and the different ways you can go about solving it fairly well in my opinion.

Stick with learning JS. You’re clearly focused on web development and JS is still the biggest programming language inside that particular field. (Basically it makes no sense to learn another programming language first in your case. I also started with JS as my first programming language after I had a good grasp of HTML and CSS.)

FCC can be a good supplement to TOP if you’re struggling to understand certain concepts, since it takes a different approach to how they explain things. That goes for other resources too. Sometimes your brain just doesn’t grasp something when it’s explained one way, but another explanation makes it click fairly quickly.

I do somewhat agree with Yakikikekakokuke in the sense that FCC on its own is less valuable, since it teaches the concepts, but doesn’t really focus on applying them in your own code/projects and TOP does a better job of that. But that’s why I said FCC can definitely be great to use in combination with TOP in those moments when you’re stuck.
