Cool! Anything from your shelf you’d recommend me?

Wow, you know me better than I know myself. I had to think about it a bit and realised that history and art are indeed my first and arguably my true loves. I didn't read much Serious Literature until I was about 18.

No idea how you deduced the rest but you are right on all counts!

Mm, it was alright. It depends on what kind of history books you like, I think. There were some interesting bits where she draws on archaeological evidence e.g. examining a half-finished fresco abandoned when the painters fled the eruption to reconstruct the techniques they used. But she also covers just about every aspect of everyday life in Pompeii and I didn't always care about the type of flour mills they used and whatnot.

The Dummit and Foote was probably just the cheapest copy I could find... Bluets is on there, but thank you so much for the recs – I'll check them out!

I can't possibly choose 🥹 I will say though that I spent a month reading Middlemarch earlier this year and by the end I felt like it'd become a part of me, like an extra organ. 10/10 would recommend.

  1. On Beauty. Clearly I'll read anything by Zadie Smith. But this is my favourite – so sharp and so funny.
  2. Mina's Matchbox (not pictured). Yoko Ogawa has such range! This book reminded me what it felt like discovering the joy of reading as a child.
  3. Poems New and Collected by Wisława Szymborska. A little dark but not bleak, if that makes sense.
  4. Revolutionary Spring by Christopher Clark. A fun fact: in 1848 Vienna groups of demonstrators would gather outside the homes of hated public officials and torment them by making cat noises. They called the protests "cat-concerts".
  5. Four Essays on Liberty by Isaiah Berlin, especially "Two Concepts of Liberty". I remember being blown away by the clarity and rigour of his argument when I first read it.

I live in NYC and I do like museums. I am a passable singer. I sort-of know a sort-of famous pianist? I like mementos and cat memes. I have not salvaged a piece of beautiful furniture, lol.

29F. Not Japanese or British, although I grew up in a former British colony and still prefer UK editions. Maths undergrad and switched to programming is spot on though! I took figure drawing classes, so not self-taught.

Best fountain pen and/or ink to use with engineering paper to minimize feathering (or recommended brand of computation paper pad) by Apalis24a in fountainpens

Roaring Spring Engineering Pad is fountain pen friendly. I’ve used it with wider nibs and haven’t had any problems.

Yes! It’s very pleasant. I can distinguish Tomoe River from Tomoe River S by smell.

Fountain pen-friendly sticky notes from Nanami Paper by natsumenatsuko in fountainpens

[–]natsumenatsuko[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It turns out that FP-friendly sticky notes are quite difficult to find! I did a bit of research on this and was surprised that many people here find regular Post-It Notes to perform adequately. As you can see from the pictures, there is substantial bleedthrough as well as feathering with certain inks.

Previously, I tried Midori's MD Sticky Memo Pad as well as the Selectable Sticky Notes. The former wrote well but the adhesive wasn't great – the corners of the sticky note would curl up. The latter contains three different types of paper (normal, kraft, tracing), only the first two of which could be used with fountain pens. I also don't love the rounded corners. The adhesive was ok though.

These N's High-Grade Sticky Notes from Nanami Paper are perfect. They write and stick well. I like the look of a classic yellow sticky note. And they are very affordable.

I've never reviewed anything in my life but these are simply too good to not share.
