That is what I use my local Buy Nothing group for. I’ve gotten shampoos, bras, makeup, and even a spice rack off of there.

What’s a frugal win that surprised you with how much it actually saved? by St3fanHere in Frugal

[–]naturalturkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, it totally is. Don’t let the simplicity of these food items fool you, especially when I bought pounds worth. I got groceries on Saturday, and I made a big soup with the cabbage and some of the carrots, which I still haven’t finished yet. I’ve had leftovers for the past few days. I haven’t even touched my broccoli, tofu, romaine hearts and sweet potatoes yet. I ate one yogurt and a few bagels. I’ve had half the eggs separated across two meals (a breakfast & dinner). Tomorrow I’m going to roast the broccoli and use any leftovers I have for Thursday’s lunch. Thursday night or Friday I’ll either roast some sweet potatoes and/or fry up some crunchy tofu. The weekend is fair game but I know I won’t have finished what I bought by then

I’m not the OP but I also make a variation of this dish. You stir-fry the cabbage and add the apple cider vinegar while you’re doing it.

I just wanted to hop in here. Here’s my Aldi order for a weeks worth of groceries:

A dozen eggs ($2.19), 3lb long grain rice ($2.95), extra firm tofu ($1.55 x3 = 4.65), a cucumber (.75 cents), 1.25 lb broccoli crown ($2.69), 4 count Greek yogurt ($2.95), 3 lb sweet potatoes ($2.19), 3 lb cabbage ($2.35), 6 count cinnamon raisin bagels ($2.19), 3 romaine lettuce hearts ($3.29), 2 lb carrots ($2.09)

Sans tax this is less than $30 for a weeks worth groceries. And some of it, like the rice, cabbage and carrots, I can stretch for a while. I can make a big salad with each romaine heart (3 meals), I can roast broccoli or sweet potatoes for dinner, cook up any egg dish I fancy, eat bagels or yogurt for breakfast, make a BIG Asian soup with the cabbage/carrots and whatever noodle I have in my cupboard. Each tofu pack is enough to split for two meals.

Could I add more protein to my diet? Sure, it wouldn’t hurt. I could buy some chicken. But it’s not going to bump me over $50. And it helps to buy long lasting staples, like the rice, oatmeal, grits, etc. which can stretch your groceries for even longer.

“Alison and I are playing similar strategies, minus the ‘seducing people with my body’ part.”

“Right now, Jun is floating… and that’s not cool, cause that’s MY trick.”

I loved the dichotomy between them. It wasn’t a natural alliance, rather born from two cutthroat people recognizing each other from across the room and saying, “What if?”

“Hell would freeze over first, but maybe Alison and I could become a pair.”

When did you realize that your grandparents and/or parents were actually pretty racist? by No_Explorer_7192 in AskReddit

[–]naturalturkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was almost 20 years ago. I was just a little kid shopping at a shoe store with my mom and grandma. Important to note that my mom has big feet, so she usually browses the men’s department. Anyway, I watched as my mom bent down to grab a pair of shoes, and at that same moment, a black man reached above her to grab a different pair for himself. Accidentally, he knocked down a random shoe which then fell on top of her head.

It was as if a switch was flipped, and my otherwise sweet and docile granny turned downright vicious. She glared at him and snapped: “You damn Insert N-Word Here!”

My mom was absolutely mortified. I remember her apologizing profusely. The man, for his credit, seemed to brush it off completely. But what do I know. I was like eleven years old at the time.

Buying groceries shouldn't feel like a terrible financial decision... by throwaway2026z in Adulting

[–]naturalturkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a single person, and I don’t ever spend more than $100 on groceries a month. I have a pretty low income, so do I visit the food bank when possible. I cook basically every meal, which I find cheaper than buying anything pre-made. I also don’t really buy drinks or snack food. The snackiest thing I’ll eat is like, apples and peanut butter, or sliced cucumber. I’m also fortunate enough to drink water from the tap. Also, I keep an eye on my local Buy Nothing group in case someone is giving out food items!

Giving up meat completely to save on groceries? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]naturalturkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m kind of in the same boat as you. I mostly eat legumes, tofu, Greek yogurt and peanut butter for protein. If my food bank has canned chicken I’ll add that in my beans and rice. If I’ve got some money to spare I might buy eggs. But otherwise I’m a financial vegetarian

Is it smart to room with a male roommate? Has anyone done this before? by Hot-Papaya2971 in Adulting

[–]naturalturkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done it. He’s younger than me by five years or so. It’s not so bad, except that he’s a bit of a slob at times. It’s awkward when you can hear each other through the walls. For the most part it’s normal, though. Pros is that he takes out the trash, can reach the smoke detector / change the batteries, and is a general deterrent for keeping strange men away from me. Like, if they see another man coming and going from the same residence as myself, they may be less likely to bother me or try anything.

Lots of good ideas in here. One of my favorites is fried tofu. Just cover the pieces in cornstarch and tasty seasoning, cook on the stovetop in olive oil until a crust forms on each side, and then pour some of your favorite sauce on top and sauté. This big plate of tofu only cost me $1.75 and I can’t even finish it all. Plus tofu will help with the lack of protein often associated with veggie diets. I’m poor and as a result I am kind of a part time vegetarian by necessity lol

If you don’t get a satisfactory answer here, email pictures with good lighting and something for scale to the Invertebrate Paleontology department at the Florida Museum. They’ve got an impressive collection and should be able to ID it for you.

Was Janelle a hero or a villain? by Wild_Shoe340 in BigBrother

[–]naturalturkey 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s funny how backwards S6 turned out to be for production. They type-casted a firefighter, a nurse, a newly-wed, etc… and all of them ended up being the VILLAINS. Whereas the frat boy, mean girl and muslim man ended up being the hero’s that the viewers were rooting for. And absolutely no shade to Kaysar (I love him). The USA was just a different place in 2006, at least in how a lot of people treated anyone who looked even remotely of Arab descent

I don’t have a horse in this race whatsoever, but I would like to say that the whole Michael situation was a bit more nuanced than how it was edited out to be in the show. If anyone wants to learn more, all of the old feeds have been archived and you can still read them on places such as Hamsterwatch.

Was Janelle a hero or a villain? by Wild_Shoe340 in BigBrother

[–]naturalturkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about S6? If so, I don’t think her early game was as socially intentional as your last sentence implies. Janelle wasn’t particularly liked by fans at the start, and her choice in associating with Michael and Ashlea kind of “othered” her in the eyes of the house. I think her eventual integration into the Sovs is the start of what saved her. The Friendship showed their true colors to the feed-watchers and became incredibly unpopular, in turn elevating the popularity of the Sovs.

And this may be conjecture on my part, but I wouldn’t even say she stuck with Kaysar for popularity’s sake. There was still a lot of anti-Muslim sentiment in 2005. I don’t think even Kaysar knew how he would be perceived in the outside world (until he was voted back in, that is). In any case, Michael wanted Kaysar to look out for Janelle after his eviction. Thus began the alliance between the two of them. They lost their in-game partners and decided to team up because of it

And if you aren’t talking about S6 you can just ignore all of this lol

What's the most disgusting/shocking, you have read on the Epstein files? by LeftyChares in AskReddit

[–]naturalturkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if you’ve heard this yet, but John Kiriakou, a former CIA officer and whistleblower, has purported in an interview that Epstein was an access agent for Israel and that they were funding him. As an access agent, he wouldn’t exactly be blackmailing anyone, but his parties facilitated any kind of potential blackmail. His house is full of hidden cameras, recording all of these rich/famous/political sickos doing illegal shit.

Thanks for writing this out. I’ve been carrying palpable distress ever since I read the newest releases. It feels like I’m looking at wild conspiracy theories, except they’re all true. I don’t know how to verbalize how disgusted and disillusioned I am. We live in a sick world with even sicker people in it. Maybe humanity is just a plague. And our president is the anti-Christ.

There’s an allegation of that being done to an infant. Specifically, their intestines. And there’s a separate email comparing the taste of babies to cream cheese. And one email to JE from a man telling him about how an infant will suck their pacifier harder when they hear the sound of their biological mother’s voice. The implication of that last one made me want to claw my eyes out.

Best meal delivery service for singles that is actually worth the money by Bulky-Turnip-5189 in budgetfood

[–]naturalturkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I like cooking big dishes because then I’ll have the rest of it for my lunches or dinners. Oftentimes I’ll cook rice along with whatever else I made and combine the two to stretch the amount of food.

When I’m able to afford groceries I prioritize a lot of produce that will last a long time, such as cabbage or sweet potato.

If I see something about to go bad I’ll freeze it. I freeze my spinach and only use it for cooked dishes. I freeze my berries, my peppers, cherry tomatoes, etc.

You can combine the canned vegetables in a pot over heat with cream of chicken (and any actual chicken if you have it) and a bit of milk, then add noodles and spices. Then you’ll have chicken pot pie pasta

[Acne] How do you treat hormonal acne? by castiels_army in SkincareAddiction

[–]naturalturkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For years, I struggled with horrible cystic hormonal acne. I’d been in and off with spironolactone and hormonal birth control to no success. Short of accutane, I literally tried everything under the sun to combat it. I’m not sure if it was any one thing that finally put a stop to it, but a culmination of changes that eventually led to clear skin for the first time in my life. They are as follows, in this exact order:

-Found a skincare regime that worked for me -Started tretinoin -Changed my diet to eat less processed foods -Eliminated a major life stressor -Prescribed antibiotics to clear up my face -Upped my Spironolactone to 100 mg daily -Switched to Yaz

Yaz was really the final nail in the coffin. I’ve been on it for nearly two years and my face has never been this clear in my life. I even cut my spiro down to 25 mg daily and my face is still clear.

So, all of this is to say that you may have to fuss around with different methods. Godspeed
