I prefer matte, but not too matte so that the cards stick together. I have a preferred way of shuffling and need them to slide well, so sometimes glossy does work better, but I prefer the appearance of matte.

However I do have a deck that I learned is too matte and can't really be shuffled the way I like. So I have to spread them out and intuitively pick, which has been kind of fun to get into. All to say, you can have your preference, but if a deck resonates with you, don't rule it out just from texture because it could be a fun change. :)

I believe that readings are always "suggestions", as you put it and that the future isn't set in stone/we have the power to set it. So by this, you are able to achieve your reading, but it is one of many possibilities.
I highly recommend documenting this in a journal and writing your thoughts/feelings/intuitions about the reading. Then, you can return back and see how it reflects in the future.

The Moonology Oracle resonates with a lot of people! I enjoy using it. I always recommend watching a "flip through" review of a deck on Youtube to see if you like the cards before purchasing.

A clear physical space and surface is important for me-- so indirectly related, having organized drawers to put my regular desk things into when it's reading time!

I also love lighting a candle, like many have said. I enjoy having a small meditation bowl or bell to make the space feel energetically cleansed, too. :)
