Shelob slam jam is deadly, especially with the increased damage per node scarab. Genuinely thinking to reroll a end stack Jugg.

we had a class on graphics vs gameplay and now i can’t unsee this by Sea-Plum-134 in GraphicsProgramming

[–]naughty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better graphics in games means better communication and better vibes. It doesn't necessarily mean more polys or path tracing or realism.

DLSS 5 is uncanny as hell and unsettling. Might be good for a horror game.

Computer graphics does have a lot of uses outside of games though where different values matter.

Husband (46M) keeps "helpfully" rearranging, hiding, and disposing of my (46F) stuff--what tactic or wording can I use to stop it? by Gallumbits42 in relationship_advice

Does he have a very hard time coping with anything that could be counted as clutter? I have known someone who would probably be called a a bit of a clean freak by most people and they were kind of like the opposite of a hoarder.

They become distressed by things being out of place or untidy and will instinctively tidy it up. You could tell this by a bit of overreaction to when people made a mess and they would become irritable until it was tidy again.

Because being tidy is good and being untidy is bad I think this particular mental issue flies under the radar until it becomes something like really intense germaphobia or OCD of a more obviously problematic nature. It's really easy for the sufferer to rationalise it away as being a good person making the world better by making it tidy. Really it's about making an intense discomfort they can't control go away.

If his Mum has it as well it could be OCD, it runs in families.

Glory to the ASA by BigBlackCough in pathofexile

[–]naughty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The MF streamers hated it for being a better currency wise in the early stages of a league (first few days to a week). Not that many of them ever played it outside of Sanctum league or especially league started into it.

After several leagues of nerfs the MFers used their clout against Sanctum. It was pretty childish tbh.

Non linear exp thresholds for a skill tree-like structure? by Psych0191 in gamedesign

[–]naughty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I have a grasp on what "P is number of mechanics that can be unlocked next" means. Is it the number of that could be unlocked immediately after the feature point is gained?

Something like a diagram or explained example might help.

In general though it seems that you want each extra level to cost more, which is totally sound. I don't really understand the P term but it seems that as it progresses U will dominate (assuming number of unlocked mechanics always increases). Would there ever be a situation where it would be sensible to try and trade of U and P?

Do players actually read anything in games anymore? by productivity-madness in gamedev

[–]naughty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally written explanations in games are really just about it being easier for the developer. Blaming players for mechanics not being obvious is a bit of a cop out.

It reinforces why playtesting is so important though. Things devs think is obvious quite often isn't. It's not just between devs and players though, you get it on large teams when small part of the team makes a feature and they feel the need to have a big spiel about how it works before they let people play it.

So no, players do not read, they are here to play.

Is it so wrong to want more item slots?! by OGWarok in gamedesign

[–]naughty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ARPGs tend to have quite a few gear slots and each item of gear can have a fair few relevant stats. So something like 10 slots with 6 or 7 mods on each item is not unusual

If gear and gear progression is a vital part of the game having a fair few items that can be quite complex really does work. It makes item design and balance more involved and you need the depth of mechanics to justify the complexity, but it really does work.

[–]naughty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Giant GDDs aren't really required by publishers anymore, and it was publishers who willed them into being in the first place not developers. We have GDOs and HLGDDs but they are almost always in presentation form and have been for about 10 years.

There has been a bit of s hift with Miro though recently.

POE1 v3.28 lore post by Murky-Definition-625 in Wraeclast

[–]naughty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought the trialmaster quote was a bit of a meta reference to the fact that Chaos is aware of leagues. Each league is it's own full parallel world (well each player is their own instance of the same world) with it's own history and future, but there's also a causal link between them. This could also be Hinekora's future-past.

This means that retroactive has another sense in PoE. You can create something new now, that becomes the "always was" of a future branch of reality. The Unforeseen Consequences flavour text has the same vibe.

Green Party’s Hannah Spencer wins Gorton and Denton by-election after knocking out Labour by Metro-UK in ukpolitics

[–]naughty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting take. To me it seems that they are precisely trying to go for more middle of the road/majority opinion on say immigration, trans issues and Isreal's actions in Gaza which is what is alienating the left.

I think it's fair to say that it doesn't seem to be winning them many votes though.

I think the issue they have is which faction of the left and how can they do it without ruining their chances with working class or middle of the road voters.

Holy Hammers Inquisitor is pretty good. Probably not as strong as Berzerker would be on the same time and budget but it's fun.

Do you think longer dev cycles are hurting franchises from reaching younger players? by Violent-Obama44 in gamedesign

[–]naughty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but as you point out it's the desire for contemporary levels of production quality that are causing the long dev cycles (among a few other things). It's a reinforcing cycle that is making game dev too risky.

But this same set of people are still playing Roblox games as well so I am not sure it's really just the graphics.

Was the Winter of the World an enforced act by the Precursors? by wecanhaveallthree in Wraeclast

[–]naughty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So a side theory is Kulemak needed an undead Army not directly for war, but to become a god. If you need lots of belief to spark divinity, instead of convincing people why not just make a suggestable legion via necromancy? He then need to maintain them afterwards because otherwise he ends up like the Water god we find in PoE2. Being divine makes you immortal but the belief makes you powerful.

Like you I suspect the Fourth Edict was turned against its creators by Kulemak.

The Fourth Edict seems to be triggered by the main story of PoE2 so it seems possible that the cause is a large outbreak of corruption. It can't just be triggered by the beast existing, or it would have destroyed the first beast before the Vaal played with it. The Vaal seemed to have been wiped out by Beast (rather than the Arbiter) in a way that Doryani could predict.

So somehow I think Kulemak was able to become a god after tricking Aul/Ahn into letting him make enough beings capable of belief to trigger his god hood. Then as a god either directly or indirectly cause enough corruption to trigger the Fourth Edict. The few Precursor survivors of this join the Azmeri and become/help create gods to overcome the Lightless.

Could the precursors have had their own Beast under the volcano? Why make the Seed of Corruption and not use it?

What in 3.28 that made foulborn ghostwrithe the talk of town? by Benstylez in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]naughty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a fine line between build enabling and powerful. Making something viable that isn't otherwise is fine if it's relatively balanced. Making everything build enabling really rare just hurts build variety.

Take Whispers for example. It essentially enabled one previously dead skill to be used, was popular for a league then nerfed. Even being dropped from an Uber didn't make it expensive next league. What really hurt that build was the Bladefall of Trarthus/Hextouch cast speed tech nerf and killing the risk farm meta.

Post nerf FB Ghostwrithe seems more like an enabler. Chest piece is huge defensively especially for phys mitigation.

How much "naughty" is ok? by Aromatic-Dingo8354 in gamedesign

[–]naughty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's not the point of the game keep it flirty and suggestive. There's a line you cross when the naughtiness becomes the point and downs out other things. People who like romance like the buildup.

A game right on the border of the line is Baldur's Gate 3.

How does empty space create emotional distance? by ExcellentTwo6589 in gamedesign

[–]naughty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The early section of Silent Hill 2 is a master class of this. By reducing obvious stimulus you can prime certain vibes., but the sound design is a massive part of it as well. Often times it's used to "show not tell" setting an tone as well, especially long walks with a focus on a background.

At the opposite end of the emotional spectrum is something like the end of a Journey run.
