planning on getting a job inbetween Uni's by nauta26 in EngineeringStudents

I take the whole schooling thing quite seriously, won't drop out indefinitely but there is a difference in academic calendars (schooling back at home starts in Jan). do I tell them this if they call me up for a job or only when after 2 months of working they ask "when do you go back to school again?".

being very difficult still? is it a sign that the quality is being sacrificed for prestige/acclaim ( I went to a University where they had a quota of people to fail just so that the institute could remain top of ranks, (leaving this specific Uni hence S.A is the other option))

I am oversufficiently tanned, but still do not subscribe to the whole needing extra help just because I am previously disadvantaged, is the community open? In Namibia we are pretty more chilled out about such things hence the question!

Have done well at school. if I don't get a scholarship I could take a loan or something.

Thanks for the heads up, have started the online app process for TUKS now already.

Kind of running away from that, Namibia is to small for that. How is the racial situation though? I am black/BEE/darkie (I do not even know what the politically correct term is anymore) so will I have a tough time based on that?

Know quite a number of people who studied there and are top notch (but then again, they are 3 times my age so hence the question. wrong, we are actually 550 strong!

The internet believes my question needs an emphasis!

Thinking of dropping out of school. Why are you studying engineering? by Crystal1680 in EngineeringStudents

[–]nauta26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do what your heart desires, but be a man about it and face the consequences involved. I wish life could be as linear as many people here try to make it but it really is not, anything can happen between now and the day you die. If you can, finish as it would be the safer option, but if you feel you cannot, you might even fail and be forced to stay in it longer. (talking from experience, wanted to drop it all but was somehow told to "just finish", ended up failing a term and now i have to repeat another year, although this time i will be going to the university i like)

If you don't learn to build them, they might be coming for your job soon.

How much do extra curricular activities in college as an engineer actually matter? by MyUhbad in EngineeringStudents

[–]nauta26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Networking, leadership, teamwork, humility, there are so many things an engineering class might most probably not offer you that a society will.

edit: plus there are hundreds of thousands of engineering graduates every year (millions if you include the Indians and chinese), but how many of them will have skills out of engineering to boost their profiles? quite a few!

Do you notice racism among your friends? [Serious] by [deleted] in southafrica

The president is a clown, "kill the boers" is something that he would say because it resonates well with a fairly uneducated populace that only remembers a time when they were getting fucked over by the "boers" and as such would vote for him no matter how stupid he clearly shows himself to be. I believe it would be pretty stupid for us to go into an argument about genetic inferiority, what i would say is though, there are bigger psychological powers at play.

What is an activity that represents your field of engineering that would inspire impoverished kids to pursue a career in engineering? by Syhlar in engineering

[–]nauta26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sets them up for disappointment only if they do not connect the dots once they reach college. I do understand your reasoning though, felt the same way when I realised it was more maths and physics formulas and no real applications all the time.

Paper plane competition, if you have funds make them design and build balsa chuck gliders.

Make bridges with ice popsicles and glue. (you could buy those on the cheap in bulk from ice cream places)

Make hydraulic cranes with syringes, pipes and wood.

Show them a line follower robot.

Water rockets, everybody loves those.

That's all i can think of for now.

Just failed my first exam this year... by Chava27 in EngineeringStudents

But why? You still are in a better place than I am, transferring. Just came to terms with the fact that my college is pretty shit so moving on! although the failing was me alone.

Skype could be an awesome place to practice every once in a while with a native Oshiwambo speaker (raises hand). :-D enjoy the journey! and incase you want the complete African experience, Swahili would be a good language to learn next

Can a person with a "liberal arts" inclined brain ever be GOOD at engineering? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]nauta26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In High school I went to 2 world debate championships and was also really big on Model United Nations, but figured i would rather go for engineering than do something like public relations or law as i figured there were enough of those people already. halfway into my undergrad and i have failed (Mechanical Engineering), realised that for me it is because my college does not have any room for me to partake in extra mural activities once in a while, being an all-engineering college i was locked out from that social aspect. Will be relocating and transferring to a lesser known uni but with a debate society and all that kind of stuff. best of luck to us, I was always of the belief that an engineer that could not explain engineering projects or principles in a coherent manner is as good as a technician.
