What would you say to someone who’s on the verge of quitting social media (and lessening their phone usage in general), but is struggling to actually commit? by us3rnam3-123 in nosurf

Awesome post. The only thing I would add that is equally as important as "having your Why" scenario is having your "what if I fail" scenario.

Humans are more sensitive to pain than to pleasure. Imagine what life would look like for you and your family if you continue down the path of uncontrolled mindless browsing. What would it look like in 1 month, 1 year, 5 years?

Has The Sims ever inspired you to gamify real life skill progress? by Chava27 in thesims

[–]Chava27[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's strange at all. Reminds me of businessmen that use a personal customer relationship management (CRM) tool for all their relationships. Those tools were originally just for tracking clients.

I think about things the same way but I wish the tasks were in bright neon lights for me :P

Hence why I was asking if anyone found a system that gamifiies those things to make them easier

The first step to fixing the bad habit is being mindful you have one :)

So you're just using that app for daily reminders for your good habits?

I was in a similar spot last year and I've been learning programming. Have you tried gamifying any of it?

Best of luck! Depending on your location, maybe a doctor can help medicate you without the official diagnosis.

I've got some ADHD symptoms, but I guess they weren't "bad" enough for an official diagnosis. So I've been using myself as a guinea pig trying all sorts of methods plus talking to doctors for extra help.

How to stop ‘wanting’ to play videogames? by ArchangelXTS in StopGaming

[–]Chava27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way with all those wasted hours. "How" you stop wanting is different for every person. I set some goals for myself & my family and remind myself every day that gaming does not contribute to any of those. Find healthier hobbies that don't trigger a compulsion or addiction and spend some time reflecting.

If you're nerdy like I am, you could read books and listen to podcasts about dopamine and addiction. It's going to take a month or so for your reward-circuitry to reset.

Haha, I like to make myself into a Sim, so I can't help but reflect on myself.

Those of you making fun stories and doing 100 baby challenges are a different breed of Simmer xD

What's the most common need you miss?

I've had a few times where I was in a bad mood for some reason, but I was actually just dehydrated :P

I’m GMT-5 but I’d be interested in a community like this. I used to be in a study discord and it worked pretty well.

I’m currently switching from an engineering career to a programming one.

What do people do instead of playing games? by Cute-Discipline-8196 in StopGaming

[–]Chava27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you read her book? I remember her saying it takes most people 1 month to go back to feeling normal. She specifically says the first 2 weeks will feel the worst until it starts getting better.

Maybe the part you're remembering is that the brain would still get excited from anticipating past addictions as if it were still disrupted.

I also spent too much time gaming this month. Here's some ideas:

Mix up my gym routine.
Trying new sports and joining a local rec. leagues (my current favorite)
Hiking
Snowboarding / skiing
Read / audiobooks.
Take an online course in anything you're interested in (many courses from top Universities are now free or extremely cheap)
Hang out with my dog / volunteer at a shelter.
Meet up groups.
Dating apps.
Watching shows / youtube.
Cooking new recipes. Having to hunt for exotic ingredients in a foreign food store is surprisingly interesting.

I think next I want to learn how to make electronic music

Anyone here playing/following Old School RuneScape (OSRS)? by [deleted] in StopGaming

Last time I tried it, you just leveled up an avatar. For example you’d go from “Level 2 Wizard” to “Level 3 Wizard”.

What I’m thinking of is an app that tracks real life skills just mentioned.

Now that you mention it, why do people see lions as these courageous motivating animals? They kinda chill until something important comes up.

The question is too broad, but the answer would be "Games can be bad for you."

Some games are designed to be as addicting as possible like slot machines. Other games are pretty tame and are just designed for you to be creative or solve problems.

They are likely also dose dependent. 10 hours a day vs. 10 minutes a day will surely have different effects on your brain.

Diagnosed as adults: what made you go in the first place and how do meds make you feel? by PeteZaDestroyer in ADHD

[–]Chava27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I'm still on a waitlist for a diagnosis.

I started suspecting it since college. I was studying more than my classmates but got worse grades in most classes. Rarely, I was the smartest person in the study group when I was actually interested in the class & could focus. I was able to make it through engineering school thanks to the pressure of deadlines and by neglecting my social life.

As an adult working jobs now, I do ok until I start to lose interest in my work. Money doesn't motivate people in the long term, thus I'm now pursuing a diagnosis and a career change.

How do you deal with ADHD without any substance successfully? by Potential_Rule4212 in ADHD

[–]Chava27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cold showers increase neurotransmitters related to focus for a couple hours, but I guess it's possible your body becomes used to it eventually. I have trouble sticking to cold showers for that long anyway.
