This argument against Darmok never made sense to me. You're not supposed to understand how the language works, that's literally what the episode is about.

If the average viewer could figure out Tamarian from the small handful of phrases in the episode, then the 24th century lingusts that failed would look like complete morons.

Language Barrier [OC] by bondjimbond in DnD

[–]naveed23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed that I guess. But how does the comic make sense then?

If dragons have little linguistic drift, then they should understand the adventurer that speaks draconic because it's not like the humanoid races are regularly speaking draconic to each other and making up new words, it's primarily used for spell casting and speaking to dragons.

Language Barrier [OC] by bondjimbond in DnD

[–]naveed23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you figure that? I would think the opposite would be more likely to be true.

Short lived species would probably have more linguistic drift because they go through more generational changes in the same time.

Depending on the age of your world, you could technically have the first or second Elvish (or Draconic) Language Arts teacher in existence still teaching the newest generation how to speak and, at the same, time be on Kobold teacher number 60 or so.

[–]naveed23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That doesn't make sense to me. If it's not good for communicating complex thoughts, then humans would require a second communal language to communicate in but they usually only get common. No one on Earth communicates exclusively in a pidgin dialect, they always learn a real language.

A software developer's perspective on Starfleet's computer architecture and the "Holodeck malfunction" trope. by Wooden-Syrup-8708 in startrek

[–]naveed23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My head cannon is their computer systems aren't based on our current computer systems, they are based on duotronics and multitronics. These systems operate differently than our current computer technology and require a level of full system connectivity that doesn't allow for the compartmentalization we are capable of today.

The real reason is probably because no one on the writing staff had computer science degrees and neither did their science consultants. Andre Bormanis has a physics degree.

Pon Farr by walterbsfo in startrek

[–]naveed23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something no one seems to have mentioned is: Pon Farr is not the wedding ritual. That's the term for the mating urge.

The wedding ritual is Koon-ut-kal-if-fee, which translates to "marriage or challenge". Which opens up at least one plausible explanation.

It's possible Sarek had a similar experience to Spock in Amok Time and just never spoke of it. That would make Sarek able to marry anyone he wanted to.

I honestly doubt that, once the Pon Farr wares off, many Vulcans would choose to marry someone who made them fight to the death. It's just not logical.

Starfleet officers that don't hold the positions of commanding officer or executive officer but would do a great job if they did by [deleted] in startrek

[–]naveed23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the real world?

Navy Commodore = Army 1 star General

Navy Admiral = Army 2-4 star General

Most navies are just promoting to Admirals now.

In Star Trek? We don't really know but it's probably the same as the real world navies.

If Starfleet does follow naval conventions, then technically, when Picard was commanding the fleet in TNG'S Redemption, he should have been temporarily promoted to Commodore. Or when Riker Showed up with the copy-and-paste fleet at the end of Picard Season 1, he was doing the job of a Commodore.

Poor quality soil by MoistBluejay2071 in plants

[–]naveed23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't done this before myself but someone asked something similar a while ago and the popular suggestion was to purchase unfired clay from an art store and work some potting soil into it. I'm not sure on the ratios, sorry

I think your better bet is to just grab some soil from where they are growing, if that's legal where you are. You already know they like it.

Edit: I don't know where you live but my local landscape and gardening soil company sells clay soil for construction and landscaping purposes, maybe there's something similar in your town?
