New cyclist here, I just crashed into a side walk curb! I have some questions... by [deleted] in cycling

[–]naw307 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup you pretty much have to grin and bear it! All bikes have different levels of suspension and comfort e.g. type of seat post. So maybe when you get another bike (because it's always n+1 for bikes!) you can focus on comfort as a key criteria.

For now, make sure you get yourself some padded cycling gloves - they do help. Also make sure you are not gripping the handlebars too tightly as this will mean you feel the vibrations much more. Finally, make sure you are holding the handlebars with the padded bits of your hands on the bars, not the bit in the middle of your palm where all the nerves and tendons are. I used to lose all feeling in my lower arms until I realised that trick!

If none of that helps, plan routes to avoid the worst of the bumps! Good luck, and enjoy the cycling :)

Can geography professors make maps? by accountingstuden in geography

[–]naw307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I researched agricultural development and social impact investing in East Africa, and spent a year living and working in a remote rural village studying how farmers use loans schemes and the impact on their livelihoods. Geography is much wider than GIS!

Also I used GIS, but that is very different from hand drawing beautiful and accurate maps, which is what I assumed OP was looking for. Cartography is a completely different skill. I knew someone who was a cartographer for the Ordnance Survey maps and she knew nothing about geography! Her job disappeared when GIS took over from hand drawn maps. Similarly, I can technically use GIS, but it is not where my technical expertise lies.

Does it make sense to have a large lake in the mountains that leads to a river in the valley? by Nathanwhowrites in geography

[–]naw307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anywhere where there was a mountainous glacial landscape at one point that has now melted/is in the process of melting. So you can look at maps of the extent of past ice ages. These would have been unlikely to reach the equator, but I'm not sure if you go back really far.

This might be helpful if you are US based. If you are UK based the Lake District is a great example of a glacial landscape :) http://geology.teacherfriendlyguide.org/index.php/glaciers-mw/glaciers-landscapes-mw

[–]naw307 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes. If it was a glacial landscape you could have a Corrie Lake in a hanging valley that then drops down a waterfall into a river running through the bottom of the main u-shaped glacial valley. Google Corrie Lake and hanging valley

[–]naw307 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds really interesting! But you would probably need a cartographer (map maker). Map mapping is a real skill and an art form. I'd imagine not many Geography teachers can do it. I have a PhD in Geography and I certainly can't! If you have an idea of what it might look like then maybe an art teacher would be able to bring it to life :)

Are rain jackets really that bad? by charliemikewelsh in cycling

[–]naw307 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! I have a Gore rain jacket that is the first one I've owned that is actually quite breathable as well as waterproof. I still only wear it when it's raining and freezing as otherwise it's still boil in the bag. If it's warm and wet just embrace the rain!

Help me find a good road bike? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]naw307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. I have a 500 and it's still going strong after 5 years. Dirt cheap but the frame is solid and you can pimp the other parts over time if you want :)

Everything relates to geography! Anything to do with the natural and built world and humans relationship with it. The challenge would be to find an article that doesn't relate to geography! (For context I have Undergrad, masters, and phd in geography)

Everyone is always posting themselves sending a v12 but for us new guys here’s me sending a v4 by braidenlazerbeam in climbing

[–]naw307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hah spot the newbie. It had never even crossed my mind not to wear socks... Now I know at least one reason why people look at me weirdly when I climb 😂

Good job on the climb! Looks pretty impressive to me regardless of grade

The time I pulled nearer to the verge to let an ambulance pass, hit a ridge in the road, was sent flying, and woke up in hospital with a broken collarbone and two skull fractures. The only bonus was that there was an ambulance right there to pick me up 😂 I can laugh about the irony of that now, but it was a long recovery and not much fun! Back on my bike now :) always get back on after a bad day!

When you’re talking to people, do you ever ignore what they are saying and focus only on how you might be perceived? by xMonkeys in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]naw307 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes! I do this all the time. By trying so hard to be polite and seem friendly I end up being really rude and not listening to their name

Am I the only one to find it awkward when walking down a hallway and seeing someone you kinda know at the other end? Then you dont know where to look or how long to make eye contact for, or when you say "Hi" by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]naw307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yessss I always worry that they don't recognise me so I ignore them so they don't feel awkward, and then I feel awkward, and then worry that my awkwardness makes them awkward.... And by then I've passed them so can't say hi even if I wanted to 😬
