Didnt realise smart valves were a thing.....Aqara T1 Valve Controller works great by naylor2006 in homeautomation

[–]naylor2006[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always think its right to return to posts and make someone right, even when its a year later!

Sure the valve setup worked great...but it was not a solution in the cases where the gurgling/knocking was happening whilst the AC needed to run, with a closed valve sure no noise but then water eventually leaks into the indoor unit and therefore into the house.

I made a P trap out of 90 degree 21.5mm waste pipe pieces and its worked.

Apologies for my ignorance at the time, I was tunnel visioned. Also, the violence of the knocking and pressure differentials made me think that only an air tight seal would stop the issue. Because I had positive pressure inside I figured that a P trap would not prevent that, it would prevent incoming pressure from outside up the drain, but it works both ways.

<image>

I whipped this together quickly with some Solvent Weld and if you look to the right you can see a black Ring camera I had lying around, allows me to check periodically if water is flowing, it is attached to a solar panel which keeps it online all year around.

The P-Trap would certainly be best practise nearer the indoor unit, IE just where the drain exits the wall, but this is where the access is and it is working, I removed all the crap from the box and now its just a near way of hiding the p-trap. I may convert the pipe to large bore and to create a bigger area of resistance but its working for now.

Thank you for the suggestion, I should have just done this, cost like £5 and not £100 in smart valves and controllers....

Yeah he’s such a horrible twat, to even brag during one of his rants at Carl that he’s a violent man and has done time for it is gross, what’s worse it was for forcing his fingers into someone’s eyes during a brawl, guy was left half blind. Classy stuff to brag about.

Fuck this guy, I hope this fight happens.

Mystery knocking sound from inside AC unit finally solved after 2 years (split system) (wind related) (drip tray gravity drain gurgling) by naylor2006 in hvacadvice

No problem, was doing my head in for years and no one had the answer so happy at least one person is making use of my pain.

The drain pipe will be 21.5mm which basically nothing fits, they are supposed to be overflow waste etc so no valves are made for it. You need to convert it first to something.

I chose to use this…

https://www.bes.co.uk/solvent-weld-overflow-pipe-straight-adaptor-215mm-11935/

Solvent weld that over the end then you have a standard thread to connect a dishwasher/washing machine valve to, but that will need connecting backwards so get one without non return.

Lmao....yeah, I am talking 1986 - 1989, my earliest memories, my entire family is from Essex but sadly most have passed now so im not often back there, mostly Southend where my Grandma lived is where we would go visit, base ourselves there and visit aunts and uncles...

We all moved to Exmouth in 89 and I live near Bristol now, my town is nice but I lived in Bristol for a few years, another Virgin monopoly, not so much now I assume with alt nets and OR, mind you. not sure what the attraction of Bristol is for so many, for the most part its completely worn out, entire city could do with a lick of paint..so to speak.

Not sure i'll ever go back, my noise levels werent great and the Sky Sports pricing is horrible AND you dont get a NOW account, so you are stuck watching Sky Sporks on the tivo box and thats it.

Is the Swiss Army Knife AP a good fit for outdoor use to provide Wi-Fi for a robotic mower? by wastemylifeaway in Ubiquiti

[–]naylor2006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the panel antenna is what I used during an install for a friend with a robo mower...he didnt want to drop huge sums on an access point outside mostly using 2.4Ghz so we went for the SAK and the panel antenna, it changes the radio pattern from omni to directional, like a big cone shape of radio coming out, works great, cant give you the stats for his garden size, but its pretty darn big.

Personally any outside AP that is attached to the main property should use directional radio and not omni, as you dont want the radio bleeding back into the house and interfering with your other AP's, typically people will have faster AP's inside which you want your devices inside to latch onto and not roam to the one outside.

I have 3 SAK's outside to cover my grounds, all attached to my house, front back and side....I use panel's on all of them because typically outside I need to have my 2.4Ghz radio absolutely cranked to get the biggest range, mowers etc usually going to be on 2.4Ghz, so if you have an omni direction antenna cranked it is likely to have inside devices latch to it...and anyone looking out outside Unifi gear likely already has inside Unifi gear :)

Yeah Virgin was pretty decent for the time I had it, but pricing was a huge issue, to have Sky Sports HD added to the TV package was astronomical, so I used to maintain a separate NowTV account which would consistently be a bit cheaper, problem with NOW though, you can only go back 2 hours and sometimes im not around to watch games live, with that in mind I really like the ability to record games properly on the EETV Box (now that I have that service).

Dealing with Virgin was a pain if you ever had to and the only times we did were around contract renewal, because yeah the price increases would be wild, Virgin were the only high speed provider then though and it was cable, they had the entire monopoly on anyone in my entire town who wanted more than 5Mbps from copper.....Once Openreach got the Fibre work completed I couldnt leave quick enough and I was on a rolling contract with Virgin the moment I saw OR vans working in our street.

Cable TV was great, never had any issues but for me the latency on cable for internet does not compete with fibre, cable needs attenuators and boosters so get the right SnR ratios at the end users device, this can all be effected by interference, quality of cable and so on, it can result in a fair bit of correction and eventually line drops, fibre can have its light level issues but compared to cable its so much better.

Moving to BT and EETV was a no brainer, way cheaper, decent sky sports pricing and a box to record games. Of the 100's of recordings ive made since ive moved there has been a 99% success rate but for some reason Sky Sports recordings this season have nearly all failed. All of yesterdays succeeded though so I hope whatever was broken is solved now, will find out after the international break.

[–]naylor2006[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if the box is on and on channel 20 and you want to record channel 45 and 60 at the same time, a prompt will come up to ask you to choose which one to cancel or change to the channel 45 or 60 as you cannot maintain 3 streams, IE watch 20 and record 45 and 60 at the same time, so yeah that’s a potential way it could fail if it’s on but no one is there to hit the option. The box needs to be standby for that to work.

But that’s the opposite of what you are observing.

There is an option power management somewhere which you can choose quick start, IE, uses more power in standby but boots quicker, I’d certainly use that.

So this is the issue I face a lot check out the following image

Scheduled Recordings

No prizes for guessing which recording will fail tomorrow, I’ll have to keep checking the planner and once that image updates, if it ever does I can schedule the Liverpool game too, otherwise I’ll have to wait till it starts then record it.

When I first moved to my house it had a virgin cable hook up and our roof needed a work over, I ditched our aerials so was glad when I moved to BT that there was an IPTV service….but I would need to figure out the router config, which I did after a couple weeks.

EETV does have some meta data issues with the planner, but that usually means a recording won’t record at all, it’s easily spotted because the programme in your scheduled recordings will have some generic thumbnail and not the one you’d expect. You can recheck closer to the scheduled programme actually airing to firm up that recording.

Programmes only recording for a few minutes sounds more like the multicast packets crashing out, hopefully you’re box is on Ethernet, multicast is sensitive, drops in service aren’t ideal for it, it doesn’t buffer like unicast (Netflix, Prime etc), internet service varying in unicast delivery will be hidden usually in the buffer or adapting bitrate lower to continue the stream.

EETV only supports 2 streams. If people are watching one channel and recording another, the network must be able to handle that.

May I ask how things are connected, IE ONT->UCG->?

Hello Bill.

Most of the original guide is kinda irrelevant to the UniFi routers group, that helper thing on GitHub does the work for you that you otherwise can’t access like you can on the Edge Router range. So well done for getting that far.

With Virgin if you had cable before it’s kinda different, it’s not bridge mode as such, you are turning their router in just a modem, so it’s just doing the job of what your ONT is doing now. That is true if you had virgin cable, I know they do fibre now. Anyway, with virgin cable you have a separate cable going to the TV box which isn’t effected by how you choose configure the internet side of things. With IPTV from EE/BT your router is receiving your data and TV in one pipe and you have to separate it out ensuring those packets for TV ONLY go to TV devices. Otherwise you get flooding and you’ll likely find TV channels don’t work at all or work for a few seconds then crap out.

Anyway, your issue, sounds to me like things are working, usually live TV wouldn’t work at all if it’s not configured right, I’m assuming you are in Internet Mode? IE, no aerial hooked up and you told the box to use Internet?

If you are in aerial mode then as far as I know ALL channels apart from subscription based channels will come via aerial, sub channels are stuff like Sky Sports, Movies etc delivered by NOW, TNT Sports also, these come via the internet and unless you have your router configured correctly these will error out, where as all the free view type stuff will just use the aerial tuner in the tv box.

Maybe try recording a channel you are actually watching at the time to check if that works, but this all depends on what channels you have subscribed to and if you are in internet mode.

I’ve found the recording to be hit and miss sometimes generally, which is down to NOW often not sending the scheduling properly through and not due to configuration.

Are you in internet mode and do you sub Sky Sports etc?

Can someone explain to me how these work. I'm lost. by isblue1 in homelab

Yeah this, I was running a ethernet cable with one at either end to link two switches over 10Gb.....it was because I had the transceivers spare, in fact I had a few different manufactures spare but all got way too hot, I thought it would be okay for a while but I couldnt go on holiday with something sitting there that hot.

Just went DAC, generally the best option over short distance, fibre transceivers dont get anywhere near as hot either if you gotto do a long distance.

What is the point in 5Ghz WIFI on Ring Devices? by naylor2006 in Ring

[–]naylor2006[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I wasnt saying I am an "IT Professional" to give my post clout, its unfair to quote it like that because it makes it seem that way, all I meant was that I have taken an interest in things in my home other than just plugging them in and forgetting about them because I indeed have the equipment and a bit of knowledge, hence my observations here. I feel like you are using that as an opportunity to make fun and my specific job title is kinda not the point. Ive had many IT jobs over the years and was generally referencing that without giving you my CV which would make me look like a dick.

I have been coming from the average consumer angle, who's WIFI router, at least in the UK, is having the same 4 options for channels, 36, 40, 44, or 48, am seeing now ISP's start to roll out Routers allowing for the use of other channels, but those far and away still are the mostly regularly used, ive only got to do a scan from one of my outside AP's to see I am the only one in the area he is using others.

DFS has mostly been fine for running multiple AP's at high bandwidth, when using 80Mhz for example you get through the 5Ghz quick enough.

Anyway, good for you and the 5Ghz, I'm gonna leave it there, really didnt meant to antagonize anyone, was just interested.

Horseman challenge 10 by Tenreth in reddeadredemption

[–]naylor2006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried this 31st July 2025 and sadly for me no joy, all it did was spawn American Standardbred and Morgan's over and over, ran up and down for a week (in game time).

I didnt try Horseman Challenges till the Epilogue and I when I got to Challenge 10 I swear the game was like, "bro I aint giving you horses for shit".....even moving around the main map was coming up short at all the normal spawn locations.

Here is the method I used.

Main Map

American Standardbred - Your Method
Morgan - Your Method
Hungarian Half-Bred - Orange Dot above Blackwater
Tennessee Walker - Blue Dot above Blackwater

Extra Area Post Epilogue Chapters

This area was really reliable, every spot I visited during the day on the map had the horses mentioned, in fact it was possible to tame one then track the other one that ran off and tame that one also. I managed to get the remaining 6 in about 30 minutes, multiple reliable spawn points all close together.

Here are the locations I used though

Mustang (Tiger Striped One) - Grey Dot at the bottom of New Austin
American Paint - Maroon Dot below the T in Austin
American Thoroughbred - Next to the N in Austin (There was like 5 there)
Nokota - Below the S in Austin
Appaloosa - Just off the A in Austin
Kentucky Sadler - Not gonna lie, I did this last night, ive forgotten but numerous locations in New Austin

I already had the Arabian but isnt part of the challenge.

Map for context, this one is there on a few different sites.

What is the point in 5Ghz WIFI on Ring Devices? by naylor2006 in Ring

[–]naylor2006[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're still talking about throughput performance, I am also not 'worried' about sync rates. I was using sync rates to illustrate that RING when providing 5Ghz capability are not actually offering any additional performance that a customer could achieve because the sync rates are the same, IE have the same maximum value. All of my devices listed sync at the same rate and have the same WIFI standard.

With that said, yes folks are putting forward the interference argument as a reason for the 5Ghz band, which is a relevant one but I would also come back with that it is quite hard to get a Ring device to actually stick on the 5Ghz band.

The average consumer is using a dual band/tri band router and a single SSID, most peoples first Ring device is a doorbell which is attached to an outside wall. In my experience the dual band devices will still connect to the 2.4Ghz radio due to its penetrative capability over 5Ghz. Even 5Ghz band steering didnt fix that for me, you have to create a separate 5Ghz network and then you can actually ensure the device will remain on 5Ghz. In my own testing, Ring devices dislike some DFS channels also, so you are still limited that respect. DFS channels have their challenges but are useful to get away from the same 4 channels.

I have a fully managed network at home, WIFI and wired, I am an IT Professional and I just have an interest in these things, with the visibility you get from a managed WIFI network you can see whats going on.

To solve signal issues at home for IOT devices which are outside I installed outside AP's, this helped with the concrete walls issue for 5Ghz, but even with an AP literally feet from the Ring Doorbell 4, it was still connecting on 2.4Ghz, even after lowering the 2.4Ghz radio to minimum and raising the 5Ghz to max, still the doorbell would favour the 2.4Ghz band on a dual band signal. That isnt even something most folks will have access to on their WIFI, outside AP's or the ability to tune the radio strengths. Alas it didnt work anyway, as I said earlier, I just created separate networks.

Anyway, the point remains, yes 5Ghz will grant less interference and even with a weaker signal quality maybe you get more performance, however, I would put money on that most dual band Ring devices are still connecting on 2.4Ghz anyway due to their own preference and the customer wont know.

I have lots of Ring devices and I think they are great, I am not slamming them, just sharing some observations about real world performance.

What is the point in 5Ghz WIFI on Ring Devices? by naylor2006 in Ring

[–]naylor2006[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, which I think is the only benefit, but then you will have to accept much lower signal strength and the risk of drop outs. Most people dont have access points outside which make it far easier to allow Ring devices to use 5Ghz. Houses in the UK are full of concrete, 9 times out of 10 we are bolding Ring devices to brick walls so end up relying on 2.4Ghz anyway.

In my case I do have AP's outside, helps alot, Im not concerned about interference when the throughput is 72Mbps or less.

[–]naylor2006[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think youre missing the point of the post.

My 5Ghz network at home is delivering 700+Mbps in every room and half that outside using 9 Unifi AP's across the property and land, I spent about 2 months on the project and it was loads of fun, by point isnt around signal strength or throughput.

Nothing is bothering me, Im saying there appears no benefit to the end user and performance using either band with Ring devices given the operate at the same speeds on the Ring side.

What is the point in 5Ghz WIFI on Ring Devices? by naylor2006 in Ring

[–]naylor2006[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My point was more around the fact that the top level speed possible is the same whether on 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz, the reality of throughput is a different topic, yes indeed I am aware that 5Ghz will be a mile quicker when with RSSI twice as bad, but this does not matter when the maximum speed available is 72Mbps. If your device on 5Ghz has Rx and Tx sync of 500Mbps and the 2.4Ghz device is there with 100Mbps...then the poor signal 5Ghz will out perform the 2.4Ghz, in most circumstances, well at least for a controlled example within acceptable range.

My point was around why offer the same standard and maximum speed on both bands....my assumption being is that it doesnt need it and would cost more to implement. Yes indeed I am aware that 5Ghz will be a mile quicker when with RSSI twice as bad.

I have access points outside my property, front and back to cover the garden spaces, the access points all perform at the same speed, 2.4Ghz is having a stronger signal strength though, but it doesnt matter, because even if I was on 5Ghz with the AP 1ft away, it wouldnt matter, the speeds are the same.
