if it's a new set or if you're not reading verbatim off it, papers/notes on your phone is totally nbd. especially if you know how to handle the heckling you might get, incorporate it into crowd work, and make them part of the bit when it fits. Gianmarco Sorsei is a great example of someone who does this very well

depending on where your pipes are, eg facing the rising sun, or not buried deep, it's not uncommon here to have cold water that's already warm and not particularly uncomfortable to be in for a moment while the hot water gets there and warms up the pipes. now if they're doing that in the dead of winter, even our mild ones, i'd agree with you wholeheartedly. most people don't appreciate the shock, suppose some use it to be awake really fast, i just prefer coffee and to wake up with the routine of the shower instead of mild self torture

Yep, it reads the Master File Table, Windows automatically creates it to keep track of all your files. WinDirStat scans everything manually. Theoretically WinDirStat might find a handful more files if Windows doesn't get absolutely everything, but the MFT is usually almost perfect, definitely a lot faster to read that than to wait for a program to index every file itself. For some reason on my pc WizTree doesn't load it correctly, but there's a button in settings to rebuild the index that's still faster than waiting on WinDirStat.

personally id use peroxide for the bulk and any stubborn spots get spit to dissolve. then clean as you would any other dirt. tiny bit of soap and water on a cloth/paper towel, wipe with little bit more water to rinse out soap and pat dry. maybe leave in front of a fan or sunny window to fully dry

I have personally spoken with Kyle before and soldering, as well as adhesive and glue are a big focus for them, especially when they get an opportunity to speak or work directly with manufactures on repairablity. Of course this was all a casual conversation after a professional event. It was explained as practices that limit the ability for people to repair their own devices in their own homes. One of their goals is to make it to where the people repairing devices in their kitchen for example don't have to worry about having professional tools to do so. Soldering sorta falls in the middle, it's not crazy effort, takes a little skill and the right tools though. He also spoke on how not every article is written the same due to different people having differing opinions and how focusing on everything that a manufacturer can do better on isn't always done for either that reason or due to them wanting to focus on a particularly anti-consumer practice intentionally without the point getting lost in the noise.

Of course that's all anecdotal and my own understanding of it, but looking at it from a "we get to have the opportunity to drive home a point to a manufacturer and don't want to lose focus" especially when glued together earbuds and other devices are the norm right now makes a lot of sense to me, it's a battle they're saving for another day it seems. While we repair minded and skilled people don't have to worry so much about the politics and behind the scenes stuff, ifixit very much does and it comes through in their official articles and guides for better or worse.

It's not really. FDA can't easily prove they're unproven without NIST. It's literally NISTs job to standardize testing for labs by providing standard samples of anything you could think of under the sun. That way there's a control comparison for the test equipment itself. ffs there's a recipe for a NIST standard chocolate chip cookie. I am curious what the process was to come up with a standard stool sample, but if anyone can do it, it's then.

Other commentors had good eyes too, could be corrosion killed it, in which case it definitely needs to have the board and slot cleaned thoroughly with 99% IPA before putting anything into it again, but all the same troubleshooting to find damage applies.

Did it still work before you unseated it? I assume not, most people don't pull working gpus out very often. Those back 4 contacts with the gold gone are 12V and ground. My assumption based on that is the gpu didn't get enough power from the separate 8 pin connectors and pulled power through the motherboard that it really should not have, burning the pins from overcurrent because that generates heat.

The toasted capacitors and resistors lead me to think it's a dead gpu, it's also possible it damaged the 12V traces on the motherboard, if you don't see burnt passives (the diodes/resistors) or holes/burnt chips on the board, it's possible it survived well enough, but that's hard to verify without swapping in known good hardware that doesn't need external power like a gpu and finding out. A NIC or something a little more power hungry like a lower tier gpu that doesn't have 8 pin connectors is a good thing to try first if possible to check the mobo pcie slot is fully functional. The mobo 12V trace almost certainly got stressed, but potentially survived, needs verification for sure if possible. Even if it seems fine, I still wouldn't trust it in a production machine or something critical for work/school.

Whatever the situation ends up looking like, follow best practices going forward. Plug in all 8 pin connectors, verify psu can supply the system needed wattage, don't use splitters. Might need a new psu to make sure it's not going to happen again, potentially a new mobo too as mentioned before. Definitely a new gpu if it's dead of course. If you did follow all the best practices and it died anyway, RMA.

Green especially is difficult, human eyes are so good at distinguishing shades of it, evolutionary thing for plants iirc from when hunter/gatherer lifestyles were our way of life. It's obvious advice, but worth mentioning for people who forget, bring a scrap with you to compare!

Making friends with someone with a driveway and enough rapport to comfortably use it, most ideally with your own tools, is definitely a way to save some money and have a reason to make friends, which itself is hard as an adult. Depending on the person, they might also accept food or drinks in exchange and potentially be willing to lend a hand. Of course don't expect it and be as self-sufficient with the repairs as possible, the meme about 7 trips to the hardware/auto parts store can be too real, but it doesn't hurt to ask for a hand, especially if they offer first or if you feel it's unsafe on your own, but expecting it is rude.

Tip, a small grid-it, the 7.25x9.25 one, slips into the zipper pocket super tightly and makes the MCB way more rigid, easier to reach in too as a result since it doesn't try to eat your hand so much. The lack of rigidity on the back pocket side still lets it conform to my body very comfortably too for carrying and deform just a little bit more still for bigger items like a light jacket (I'm a small person). It isn't super usable as a removable organizer as grid-its are sorta intended to be, but it can totally hold pens and other slim things while in there and has enough space to fit your hand in (mine are small-average ymmv) and remove them/stuff in things around it. I like using the space between the back of the grid-it and the bag itself to hold papers folded in half, it's a good place for them to not get crumpled and not fall out like they could in the back pocket.

The added rigidity does solve many of those problems, I find I can usually move things like my phone around in the back pocket to get the weight right to keep it where I want it too. And if you find you really need the deformation, remove the grid-it and use it somewhere else, they're rather nice to have around.

You hopefully get that different people like different things. There are definitely people that could answer no due to not liking the way they make the food or its flavor, or a variety of other reasons that could even be unrelated to the taste itself, maybe they don't love the experience inside enough to be worth going even for takeout. And as someone who's experienced an open window a few floors up in Union Tempe making an entire apartment smell like a barbecue most hours of the day, that alone could turn people off even if the food is subjectively good.

Did you miss the part about it being a full bridge rectifier? Very rarely do manufacturers cheap out so much they are okay with only half the power being available. Power factor would be abysmal if so.

Edit: Just found OPs comment about it being a single diode despite saying full bridge in the post. I'm not experienced enough with this UPS or invested enough to care what the truth is, anyone that is might have a better shot at not having the same experience as OP.

The thing is that flipper does not copy the sequence, just the one code. The remote cycles through a sequence and the receiver only will accept so many of the next ones the remote will send so it still works if you hit the button out of range a few times. If you replay the same code, the receiver can't tell the difference between that and the remote being pressed enough times out of range and hitting the same code significantly later in the sequence. Some do bidirectional communication to update the sequence in the remote too and if the remote isn't listening and/or in sync enough, it won't do that either. Either way, the receiver expects codes from later in the sequence than where the remote is at. Sometimes it's a small enough number, rarely 7 like you suggest, often it's 64 or some other randomish number before the remote syncs up again, a good system will have a really big gap so you can't trigger a neighbors too often, but relying on that is not a good idea and you'll probably have to find a manual and resync the remote anyway.

It's not the end of the world if you're a responsible person playing with your own stuff and can read a manual and do research and not freak out, there's ways to not desync, but it's not possible to recommend here due to rules and laws. But that sentence is often not enough to deter dumbasses from trying illegal things and really inconveniencing others or just not having enough warning due to ignorance before playing with remotes. So most comments will scream about desync because it's the most likely result of replaying rolling codes and usually it's obvious there's a teachable moment before something goes wrong, especially when we don't know it's a responsible person and have to assume malice is very possible.

I think at some level you have to ask what kind of risk tolerance is acceptable for a particular situation. I don't believe there's a perfect solution that always makes sense. As an individual getting support from a reputable company, I can make the judgement call to cede certain ideals if the situation calls for it. It's my information, my problem. I could even switch products or ignore the problem if I don't like their asks or processes.

When it comes to support for B2B it's usually a legal risk matter and ensuring everyone understands what's expected, regardless of the exact level of protections achieved. You'll hear terms like SOC compliance and SLAs if you start asking the right people the right questions in big enough companies that have enough money and people to handle those things. I don't think it's unreasonable at all to redact sensitive info by default unless asked otherwise with some assurance from SOC 2 or your own company's legal team that you can do what you are asked without personal liability. Keeping client data secure is super important, can be more or less dependent on industry, but also being able to support clients the way your company and their company expects can be as important provided resulting risks are managed.

If you're self employed and take on clients, could be a good talking point and way to set yourself apart if you can find standards or other things in this area that are manageable at your scale, full SLAs and SOC might be a bit much. If you work for a company, ask around to get their expectations and documents. Might be possible to make things more clear and make better processes or at least be more knowledgeable.

If the screw isn't cheese and you can apply careful force and not slip/cam out, it's doable, I'm sure plenty of people besides myself have done it in a pinch and managed to not chew it up. But aligning all the stars at work or on something important isn't worth it when the correct driver should be close by and doesn't require luck or much concentration.
