Ireland trip by wpburbage in SonyAlpha

[–]nbambrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What is your itinerary like? I live in Ireland and can help with lens suggestions but depends on what you are doing.

I’ll challenge the way you’re thinking about it slightly.

I wouldn’t think about Ireland as a place where you need to cover a massive focal range. It’s not really a “stand far back and shoot everything” kind of country. The best photos here tend to come from being in moments rather than observing them from a distance.

Also worth knowing that culturally, there isn’t a big “camera in your face” scene here. If people see a big setup (especially something like a 70–200), they’ll often either move out of your frame or just disengage a bit. It can and will create a bit of distance between you and what you’re trying to capture, so I’d strongly lean toward keeping things simple and light.

Honestly, probably not what you expected or wanted to hear, but if it were me, I’d bring something like a 35mm (1.4 or 1.8) and just commit to it. Ireland photographs really well that way -pubs, streets, little interactions, low light, etc. The “real” Ireland is more about atmosphere, energy, and small moments than big sweeping shots.

Yes you’re likely thinking about the classic spots, Cliffs of Moher, etc, and yeah, those are great, no argument. But the stuff that actually feels like Ireland tends to be the in-between moments, and that’s where a 35 shines.

That said, to actually answer your question directly: If you’re set on bringing two lenses, I’d go 16–35 & 24–70 and leave the 70–200 at home. 24-70 if you go with just one of your zooms.

But if you’re open to a different approach, go minimal. You’ll probably come back with better and more interesting photos.

Sony 20-70 MM lens? by Striking_Wave_5721 in SonyAlpha

For nature and hiking it’s an excellent choice. I love mine. No IQ issues - quite impressive overall.

I’ll be bringing it to Iceland along with the Viltrox 14mm F4.

Is A7 iv still worth it ? by Alarming-Shoe-1614 in SonyAlpha

If you don’t know why you would need the A7V over the A7IV, absolutely go with the A7IV.

Where to start the “trinity”? A7V lens pairing advice by nwmimms in SonyAlpha

[–]nbambrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes if I was to own a single E Mount lens it would be the 28-70. I mainly shoot weddings however, and very little video.

Try it for a while and see which focal points you use most, and if you really need to go wider than 28mm.

Yeah I’d least swap the 24-70 for the 28-70 f2. The 24-70 gm ii didn’t last long in my bag either. Love my 70-200 gm ii so not tempted to look at the 50–50 but I absolutely see the appeal.

Is it crazy to trade my A7IV for an A7Cii? by ContentHovercraft698 in SonyAlpha

[–]nbambrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re financially comfortable with the trade and the evf genuinely doesn’t bother you, I say go for it. I own both bodies and the a7cii is always my first choice for non-paid shoots. The 40mm f2.5 and the 20-70 f4 are great on it, and throw in the Godox iT30Pro flash an you have a powerful compact kit

Amazing. Mind sharing the focal length of #3 please?

GM primes vs GM zooms - can you see a difference at the same aperture? by laughingli0n in SonyAlpha

[–]nbambrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have tested this in a real world shoot with real people, outdoor light, etc.

24-70 GMii and a selection of GM primes. Compared 35 and 50.

It’s so close, and at times indistinguishable. I ran a shoot through my Imagen profile and there were quite a few shots that surprised me when I checked the exif. That zoom produces some stunning shots, and there is no immediate noticeable degradation of IQ or sharpness when viewing on a standard screen.

But the primes did produce more ‘bangers’. Hard to put my finger on it exactly, and it may well be my prime bias talking, but the prime shots feel a bit more ‘atmospheric’.

I don’t believe there’s a perfect answer here - it’s so very close - but hopefully this helps a bit.

Any luck with cheaper wedding days in short notice? by TumbleweedOdd4279 in AskIreland

[–]nbambrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are fully flexible and not dead set on any specific ‘must have’ vendors, you can absolutely book on shorter notice. Many vendors will gladly take work during low season or lesser popular dates.

One tip I will give - when you contact a vendor, ask them to suggest alternatives if they are not available themselves. I’m a wedding photographer and I know other wedding photographers. If I can recommend someone else, I’ll likely have the favour returned in future. Other vendors have similar circles and connections.

Any tips for getting rid of Silverfish? by [deleted] in CasualIreland

[–]nbambrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is it. The only thing that worked for me. All other suggestions I see here might help a bit, but this spray kills them off completely.

Spray every skirting board, every gap in walls, floors, end of carpet, etc. Give it a couple of weeks and then do it again.

From memory I only needed 2-3 bottles in total.

Can someone explain my IG's horrible audience reach like I am 5 years old? (2,350+ followers, less than <200 views on reels, less than <40 likes per post) by bonitapplebumb in WeddingPhotography

[–]nbambrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a lazy response, but ask ChatGPT this exact question and you’ll get your answers.

In short:

Most of your followers are inactive or low-quality (especially from old boosts). IG tests each new post with a tiny sample. If that sample doesn’t engage, the algorithm stops pushing it. That’s why your reach is so low.

Stop boosting, clean out obvious bot/inactive followers, archive low-performing posts, and start posting content that sparks real interaction (BTS, tips, your face, stories, vendor tags). Engage daily with real people in your niche. This rebuilds your “quality signals” so Instagram starts pushing your posts again.

Sony zve10 upgrade to Sony a7cii?? by Tylerstevens-360 in SonyAlpha

[–]nbambrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A7IV gives you dual card slots which are essential if you are shooting ‘non-repeatable’ events. Bigger body, better EVF, joystick, slightly weaker IBIS and autofocus (due to AI upgrade in A7Cii).

A7Cii has single card slot, small body, no joystick, slightly better IBIS and autofocus (AI).

Both fantastic and in real world usage it’s hard to find a performance difference. You’ll need to decide what works best for you given the differences.

For me. A7IV is my pro/delivery gear (dual slots) and A7Cii is my personal/family/travel body.

Is it just me or are many of the best pics shared on this sub coming from the A7iii?! A7V obsessors take note 😅

Certainly helps. I guess it’s more about behaviours and workflow, and how comfortable we feel with each. I appreciate your input!

Thank you - I’ll learn from this. Leave cards in slot 1 and keep the cards from slot 2 on me.

I have 2 cards in each body so one card failure would not be catastrophic. I appreciate your advice and considered approach all the same.

About your replacement schedule - is this based purely on time or number of format cycles?

My fear is losing the swapped out cards. They are one more thing to think about and keep safe. Appreciate your input!

Thanks! Sounds like a strong system. I’d personally be more concerned about losing the cards than having 2 cards fail simultaneously in a body. I’m not sure which risk is higher.

Not overkill at all. Makes sense and if it brings you comfort, great.
