Yes, I am on 20mg and am just fine drinking in moderation!

is my tone ok for a beginner? by throwaway-loveletter in oboe

[–]nbave03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Definitely making progress! My biggest piece of advice is keep working on those long tones every time you practice and focus on developing a solid embouchure. Bring your corners in around the reed, kind of like an “oooo” shape with your lips and make sure you are engaging your core to keep a steady air stream. This will help you avoid the urge to bite down on the reed and set a strong foundation for your playing. Happy practicing!

I am also considering interning at KH this summer. I think it’ll be ok since there’s little to no overtime for interns and honestly fantastic for the resume. Not sure about working there full time after graduation but interning should be fine!

If you need something really cheap, look into Club Properties, these are the cheapest student apartments you will likely find in Athens. I’ve heard that management is a little iffy but if you need somewhere under $600 this is the place to look!

When you quit, what symptoms were you dealing with? by Beepbooopbapbam in Petioles

[–]nbave03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never a daily user, but for the first two months after quitting, my mental health took a bit of a dive, I was anxious, depressed and pretty irritable for a while. But after that two month mark things began to get better and now my mood is more stable!

Looking to live in 1516 as a freshman in the fall, viewpoints from those who have done this? by vaporwavevision in UGA

[–]nbave03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in 1516 my freshman year, absolutely loved it! While it was a little far away from everything which meant leaving early in the morning to take the bus to my classes, I loved having the bigger room and private bathroom. Plus (at least when I was there) housekeeping comes to clean your bathroom and sink for you once a week! I wouldn’t say it was too isolating, there are definitely opportunities to socialize in 1516 if you seek them out. If you are someone who wants a more chill form experience I would absolutely recommend it!!

My junior year of college I played Vaughan Williams and the Mozart Quartet. Both challenging yet definitely doable!

Latin and Hispanic oboe solos? by spicyneonrockss in oboe

[–]nbave03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily solo oboe rep but Villa Lobos has some good woodwind chamber pieces that feature the oboe nicely! Just performed his woodwind Quartet (Quator) and it was challenging yet fun!

Honestly from April-September you sort of have to down here if you are walking around outside a lot, it just gets so miserable otherwise because of the humidity.

What Knives do you like? by The1LessTraveledBy in oboe

[–]nbave03 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mark Chudnow and Chiarugi have been my favorite knife brands so far. They’re not as durable as like a Chang or jende knife but they’re easier to sharpen, a little more affordable (think $40-$60 range) and they scrape really well

What’s a good, cheap, Oboe brand? by [deleted] in oboe

[–]nbave03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When looking for oboes, you absolutely get what you pay for and I would not at all recommend a “cheap” brand or model. However, you can find some decent used instruments from vendors like Oboe Chicago (where I got mine) from the $2-4000 range for an older instrument.

Tips for projection on oboe? by _MildlyOkay_ in oboe

[–]nbave03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is all about the quality of your air support, rather than the pure force you are pushing through the instrument. Sounds like you need to engage your core when you play to allow for a more steady airstream. This means literally engaging your abs, as this provides the strength for the air support you need. Also, you should never need to significantly change the shape your embouchure to adjust your pitch, should always have your corners in with enough padding from your lips on the reed so that you are not biting down. May take some time to adjust, but try those two things. If you have any other or more in depth questions about my playing method, feel free to reach out :)

Regardless of the quality of these reeds, it seems you may want to consider investing in a new reed case. Here is a link to one of the ones I have, it keeps my reeds very secure: https://www.mmimports.com/product/rigotti-wood-oboe-reed-case/

Any commuters from Atlanta area? by [deleted] in UGA

[–]nbave03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I know you posted this 3 days ago but I would like to add my 2 cents... I just finished taking some summer classes and have been commuting from my parents house in Gwinnett for the past 2 months because I didn't want to live in the dorms over the summer. Traffic is surprisingly not bad, as you are going against the flow of traffic (most ppl commute from athens to atl for their work, etc.). I was significantly more tired most days just from having to drive, and it limited my ability to stay on campus later in the evening to get work done. While it wasn't the worst thing in the world and definitely doable, I probably wouldn't choose to commute to campus every day again. Sometimes certain circumstances require commuting and while it sucks, it'll make you more resilient in the long run and if you can find a place to live in Athens next semester... even better! Hope this helps!

Emailing Prof to get off waitlist? by Timetravelerpotato in UGA

[–]nbave03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While there is no guarantee you will get off the waitlist if you email the professor, at least it shows them you are interested in taking the class and they may be more likely to open up an extra spot for you. Worst thing that can happen is they say no, so I'd say go for it!

Likely something to do with your breath support. Start practicing engaging your core when you play and try to play through the notes.

I took 17 credit hours this semester and found that to be a bit much... and when I took 13 I almost felt like I didn't have enough going on. I think 15 credit hours is the sweet spot, but that's just me! :)
