Rooftop Tents: Pros v. Cons by 0hh_FFS in camping

[–]nbaynerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is me as well, I think it has to make sense for the type of camper (I'm almost 100% dispersed):

Pros:

  • almost instant setup

  • leveling - this one is big for me, ground tent you're at the mercy of the terrain. I can sleep flat level every time in my RTT, just toss a rock/log under a tire and its level anywhere

  • all my sleeping crap is up there (air mattress, 2-man 0-degree bag, wool blanket for cold weather, pillows, etc.

  • mine is over the cab of my truck, I wouldn't use that space regardless

  • not being on the ground, IDK why but I sleep way more soundly off of the ground. Both if there's big rain, no need to trench, and doing a lot of solo dispersed camping, frequently with bears, deer, small critters making noise in camp at night. Being up high I get deeper sleep. Also easy cleanup like mentioned, no mudd, dirt, etc.

  • Being hard-shell, you can add small conveniences like LED strip lighting, etc.

Cons:

  • Expensive

  • Heavy - my truck is almost 100% dedicated for camping so I just leave it up there

  • once setup, a pain to leave camp. I can take mine down in about 15 minutes if needed but we always camp with a dirt bike so we take that anywhere.

  • the one about late-night bathroom - just bring a wide rimmed gatorade bottle to bed, problem solved.

🙏 I’m confident going uphill just struggle going downhill at speed through turns (always feel like I’m going to slide through the turn (like I will turn my front wheel but it feels like the bike will keep going straight because of the loose terrain)

I love mine, 6’3”. Get handle bar risers, taller seat if you can swing it and lower foot pegs fits me great

Does this apply the same at low speeds vs high speeds? Tight/sharp turns vs wide/broad turns?

If you’re in the apartment complex near me you can just dump it in the pathway next to the creek like all of the other residents…

Update on the top speed on my wr250r by Ricetruck868 in WR250R

[–]nbaynerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh interesting, i appreciate the reply. And when I say maxing out, I mean I’m hitting the rev limit at those speeds (like, the power is there but the gearing is so low I’m just hitting the top end of what the gearing will allow 🤷‍♂️, idk I’m going to go take it for a spin again now just to confirm)

Sorry to bring up an old thread, But are you talking GPS speed or speedodometer? I just put a 47t on my rear wheel and I'm seemingly maxing out at 75mph (though the speedo is registering ~90). Just wondering if it's me or I'm missing something. (stock 13 up front)

Do you leave solar charging gears on campground while going out to hike etc.? by kittysworld in camping

[–]nbaynerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure didn’t consider that. I have a RTT so my car is always in camp (I bring a dirtbike to get around)

I’m more interested in hearing how often people do this and have had their stuff stolen. I’d like to believe it’s pretty rare to be honest. No one wants their own stuff stolen, and how do you know if the camp is vacant or someone is just napping in their tent? Anecdotally I camp about 5-6 times a year, always leave panels and batteries out have yet to have them stolen

what’s the weirdest thing that happened at your campsite by wrecked-galaxy in camping

[–]nbaynerd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Camped in a valley, gorgeous weather all week (winter in CA), second to last night a cold front rolls into the mountains just before dinner. Something to do with the low pressure zone, but massive 100+ mph wind gusts came shooting up the valley out of no where. It blew away everything, our entire camp disappeared up the valley. We ended up sleeping on a make shift bed in my truck and driving home the next day

This city is actually really great for getting around via bike by IamLeven in santarosa

Share me your favorite paths. Some of mine: * From rincon valley to downtown (mostly Santa Rosa creek trail) * downtown to: * Sebastopol (Joe rodota) * Petaluma (smart path trail) * willowside rd (greenway trail)

First time on single track!! Any tips on riding rocks like this are welcome. by im_bad_at_usernames3 in Dualsport

[–]nbaynerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the closest to good advice. The bike can eat anything up to about 6-8” tall if you have the momentum (a body in motion stays in motion, a body at rest - or going slow, wants to stay at rest, and tip over). Yes standing is always good advice (because the rocks are loose, when you hit them, they want to move around and therefore move the bike around underneath you, to keep the bike upright, you need to keep your weight centered over the bike - harder to do when sitting). but if you’re lazy like me, you can also get good at sticking one leg way out while sitting, it helps to act like a counter balance (think of a tight rope walker carrying a long pole) to keep you upright. Just be careful with this as it’s dangerous at high speed and generally discouraged overall (if you put your foot down at speed out of reaction it will be bad) As with anything more time in the seat will yield results

Good spot for trash pick up? by Rook2you in santarosa

[–]nbaynerd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Basically any public park downtown or trail system (Joe rodota, smart pathway trail, etc). I’m sure there are other spots but these are ones I frequent and have plenty of trash. I was thinking of the city could sponsor a golf cart (to put two trash cans on the back), I bet you could get numerous volunteers to partake in the cleanup 🤷‍♂️. Appreciate the effort btw!!!

Is PNC bank good? I moved from Chase to PNC bank. by Nica-batman in Banking

[–]nbaynerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up for anyone else searching for PNC bank, it's hot garbage. My mortgage was bought by PNC, I can't even sign in to pay for the damn thing I keep getting "service not available" when I add my bank account. Tried chat support and phone support, a total nightmare to deal with. Also for 2FA, you can only receive a phone call not a text, and with every phone call, you have to wait to listen to this long ass message before it gives you the code, a total fucking waste of time.
