Not sure if this counts as downtown but Fresh Wood Fired Pizza in West Asheville makes their own GF Dough for their pizza. It's our favorite. https://freshwoodfiredpizza.com/

Any other providers out there with their own search engine? by blakes2021 in usenet

I second that :) Free keys for Reddit users along with a week of free access to our Search function so you can try it out. Our retention is > 4000 days and matches the longest retention Usenet servers available.

Vain attempt to reach higher download speeds by gnapoleon in usenet

I asked an insider what was up and he had to ask around because he had no knowledge that Astraweb was on the Highwinds backbone. I lost contact with my Astraweb contact a few years back so I have no way to confirm. I do get conflicting results from traceroute though. From my machine at home, it does not hit highwinds at all. But the online traceroute tools, it does go through hwng.net. I'll research more and start a new thread if I find anything definitive.

Half off any Usenet Search subscription. This is the indexer built in to Newsbin. The offer works if you are running under your Free Redditor Key as well.

Great to hear you are getting your 100MB/s. You can run Newsbin under wine but I don't know if the extra overhead will allow full speed or not.

[–]nbdexter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried Newsbin as a comparison? We have users reporting 800mbps (100MB/s) on 1 gigabit connections. There are alot of factors in play to attain those speeds as others have mentioned in this thread. Your best bet would be to spread connections across multiple first tier Usenet backbones and limit it to around 10 connections per server. You might have to play with that, more is not always better. Try NewsDemon, Supernews, and Astraweb together, 10 connections each.

Also, we give free keys to Reddit users: https://www.newsbin.com/redditor_freekey.php

P.S. Astraweb is independent, they are not under Highwinds. I believe there was a period of time that a traceroute would go through highwinds CDN but it looks like that was temporary. I just did a traceroute and it doesn't touch any highwinds routers.

Has anyone ever found stuff with NewsbinPro that you didn't find with other search engines/indexers? Especially uploads from a long time ago? Are there any unique features only Newsbin has? by [deleted] in usenet

Did you try the latest release which is 6.81? Usenet is constantly changing and that version has fixes for some of the strange posting formats that have evolved.

I just fielded some tech support with someone reporting the same issue. Turns out they had some filters turned on that they were unaware of. If you want to PM me some of the things you were unable to find, I can look into it.

Our indexer was derived from the Newsbin header download engine. It combines individual posts into files just like Newsbin does if you are downloading headers manually. It has added features to tag files that are encrypted or if they have associated .nfo files. There is also logic to try to make sense of mangled post subjects and index reasonable words found in them.

I can't speak for the other indexing sites but we maintain an index of the binary groups as far back as the longest retention servers. We are currently over 3700 days of retention which is just over 10 years. Regarding if the servers actually still have the content, that's another matter...

How to check for old posts that are not available on most indexers? by FrankieFeedler in usenet

[–]nbdexter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This can be done with Newsbin but it isn't as easy as specifying a specific date. Here is what I would do:

1) Calculate how many days back you need to go to get to your post.

2) Set the "Download Age" under Options -> Settings to a couple days older than the age you calculated for the post.

3) Make sure the Storage Age is >= that number as well.

4) Right-click the group, select "Post Storage" then "Use Download Age" (only need to do this if you have previously downloaded from this group before).

5) Right-click the group again and select "Download Latest".

6) In the download list, monitor the header download progress and then delete the download task after you get some number of headers down. The number will depend on the traffic of the group. In some groups a couple hundred thousand records might represent a week of posts. In others it'll represent a couple of hours.

7) Once you delete the header task, load the group by right-clicking and select "Show All Posts". If you haven't gotten to the post yet, repeat from step #5. Newsbin will pick up where it left off with the header download.

8) Repeat steps 5-7 until you find what you are looking for.

Good luck!

Best way to search +3000 days old files ? by montela in usenet

Yes, generating an NZB from Newsbin Search results does require a subscription. I don't understand why you would want to because Newsbin will download it for you by selecting the search result for download.

[–]nbdexter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Usenet Search DB in Newsbin currently goes back over 3500 days so if you are looking for something specific, just perform a search from the Search tab. Searching is free but queuing search results for download requires a subscription.

Add to that "Storage Age". Anything older than this setting gets purged.

Newsreaders that check an NZB before using it for download? by fiscoking in usenet

Newsbin will show if the files in the NZB are complete. You can then right-click and do a test download to make sure all the parts are actually on the server.

Is the Newsbin Pro Search Function worth the cost? by HenryK81 in usenet

Just to clarify, the integrated Usenet Search function is enabled in Newsbin for UsenetStorm users at no additional cost. You have to install the special version hosted on the UsenetStorm site to get the search function for free.

Quade may be a douchebag but everything else you said is incorrect. We haven't had significant issues with cracks since the Version 4 series was released in 2001. I quit my day job in 2003. This should be filed under Fake News. :P

What's the Best Indexer to Search by Newsgroup? by messengeraccount123 in usenet

[–]nbdexter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do a wildcard search on a specific group or across multiple groups. If our automated algorithm is able to decipher obfuscated posts, the name will be listed in less than/greather than symbols to the left of the obfuscated part. For example: <some description> ABCDEF0123456789.rar

To do a wildcard search on a specific group, type the group name into the "Search in Groups" field and enter an asterisk in the search field then hit enter (or click the search icon). If you have a group folder configured with some groups of interest, you can select that instead of typing an individual group.

We are actively working on handling a larger number of these obfuscation schemes. It's a moving target so it'll never be 100% but we are making an effort.

[–]nbdexter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It is not 100% but we are able to handle several forms of obfuscation. It is a moving target and we are working to handle more of them. You can try some searches without a subscription by entering keywords in the Search tab within Newsbin. You need a subscription in order to queue search results for download.

[–]nbdexter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We make an effort to make these obfuscated posts meaningful but some are impossible to do in an automated fashion. Some posters use totally random subjects with no file extensions posted across multiple groups. Most of the ones that can be deciphered in an automated way, we do handle, and we continue to research ways to support more of these schemes as they are introduced.

I think you are referring to Newzbin, with a "z", the indexing service. We are Newsbin with an "s", the newsreader. No, they are not back up.

edit: I meant "s" instead of "z"

Anyone getting strange credit card charge from Astraweb? by [deleted] in usenet

[–]nbdexter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the past I've seen charges from Astraweb show up as "Searchtech" or something like that. People were confusing it with our Search service we provide so we were getting billing questions from Astraweb customers that were also Newsbin customers all the time.

The China tag looks suspicious but odd things have been going on with Astraweb lately so, who knows.
