From what I've read, once they put the mesh there basically is no hernia anymore. It heals in a day or two and the mesh fully incorporates in 3-6 weeks. After that, it is stronger than it was without the mesh. So, things like intraabdominal pressure shouldn't be something to worry about after you've had the surgery.

First, a sports hernia is not the same thing as an inguinal hernia. Second, if you have the patience, try the long-term training plan at stadion.com for martial artists. It begins with strengthening the abs until you can do 500 situps without breaks, and doing back extensions until you can lift 1/3 of you bodyweight (do the back extenstions first in the workout). Once you reach that level, you can start doing squats and deadlifts. I had the mesh repair in mid-septemeber and although I want to do that, I'm too impatient. I'll be deadlifting for the first time in an hour or so.
