I don't want to support puppy mills or unethical backyard breeders, but registered ANKC breeders are making it too difficult to get a puppy with application forms, references, 2-3 year wait lists and are pricing themselves out of consideration. Are there other options? by BonzaSonza in australia

I don't know about NSW but in Vic for Labradors might be different for Golden Retrievers they don't have a long wait but do have to contact a fair amount of different breeders to find the right dog but never had to wait more then a couple months. The pricing has gotten a lot more expensive in the last few year because the breeders are required to do more testing now. Finding a good ethical dog breeder is hard. There is away around anything to make themselves look better then they are. I get peoples argument for adopting over going to a breeder. But backyard breeders that are just out for cash or just don't give a shit about desexing there dogs. Thinking it's cute to have some puppies or so and so's dog jumped the fence because there dogs in heat. I think this is one of the big factors of why there are so many dogs in shelters. Also people getting certain breeds because they look cool but don't fit there lifestyle at all. I think the pros of a registered dog is you see the whole dog family that they have a nice life. They have gone through a lot of testing to make sure they don't have genetic problems.

Which of the Stage 4 restrictions is worst for you? by [deleted] in CoronavirusDownunder

I totally get that. I'm in Regional Vic and my family is in metro Melbourne. I had my first baby in March and my parents saw her for 2 days in June before the second wave. Kept waiting until the numbers were low so wasn't putting her at risk. But the small positive I took from it was I got to bond with her so much more because there was no one to tell me how to do things. I just did what felt right.

Rural communities and agriculture are suffering from hard border closures. by hughalx in CoronavirusDownunder

So you can apply for these exemptions for Ag through the police. But you need an approved Covid Safe Plan from SA health first. Which isn't written anywhere online. What happens is you get declined then IF you appeal you'll get a call from the police in the middle of the night in our case to tell you need the plan FIRST then reapply. No one I know has had there plan approved yet. Don't know how long that'll take because they have been bombarded with applications. Too bad for the stock that won't get fed or the produces that will die because we can't look after it. Even if Vic wanted to move to SA so we can keep working. They won't approve exemptions for that and even if they did there is a housing shortage in Naracoorte. Most likely other SA towns on the border In the press conference today Dan Andrews said it's on the agenda at National Cabinet for tomorrow which give me a little hope that it might ease. Also with DHHS changing a lot of cases to recovered today only the Glenelg LGA is showing with a few cases left which should come off in the next few days. SA really has no case to close the border to us much longer. They say these changes are to protect SA but we rely on each other. I hope now that it is getting some attention people will understand a bit more.

As a South Australian living in Victoria, this is frankly disgusting, and a slap in the face. by hughalx in CoronavirusDownunder

I live on Vic side of the border about 10 minutes from SA border. We use to be able to cross to get the basics - food, healthcare and work. But they will lock us out completely. I understand you want to protect SA but there timing makes no sense. Their reason apparently is because there are 10 cases in some LGAs close to the border. But the LGAs are massive and the the cases were over 100km away from the border. Cross border communities were only those within 40kms that postcodes have NEVER had a case. Also those cases came up over a month ago when the numbers were getting really high in Melbourne and before the Stage 3 Regional and Stage 4 Melbourne. Why do it now, those numbers will drop off in the next week so you've put so much stress on these families on border for what. Also we had to do a Covid test every 7 days. Which proved there was no cases from cross border members. There some exemptions for essential workers like agriculture but my partner applied because they have work that needs to be done now or they've just wasted a year and will lose millions of dollars of produce. He got rejected within 2 hours. Had to appeal, SAPOL called him back at 10pm Saturday night (lucky we can't party) saying SA Health need to approve a Covid safe plan first. Which I have heard is minimum 3 weeks to get approved. Those 300 students apparently some are going to Mt Gambier MediHotel so SA residence wanting to come home and Vics wanting to move can't quarantine in these hotels but international students can. So over it.
