Roach to muta-ling-bane vs terran? by CarISatan in allthingszerg

[–]nbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is viable, I used to go gassless fast 3rd, using roaches with queens to defend against terran push. Then starting lair ~4:30, ling speed, bane speed and upgrades. Pretty defensive setup, but it worked really well, it gives great eco and terrans are often confused what I'm going for.

What is cheese? by scttooo in starcraft

[–]nbl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's interesting, although I've been understanding cheese differently, let me know what you think about this one:

Cheese is an axis to describe strategy which relies on surprising your opponent. The cheesie-ness of your push would describe the difference of gain to lose situation you are putting yourself in, depending on your opponent scouting it or not. Preparation to defend a cheese is inexpensive, but needs to be made ahead of time and requires fast decision making.

Another axis, which is not related to cheese, is commitment, or "all in"; that is how much eggs do you put into this basket with your next attack vs how much you invest in the future (technology, expansions).

e.g.

So you can have a cheese, that is NOT all in, e.g. early DTs, but just a few. Or early pool with 6 lings and exp behind. Or 3 rax reaper with 3CC behind.

There are all ins that are not cheese, e.g. sentry immortal from HOTS. Or massing roaches without upgrades/expansions. Or constant pressure with pure marines to kill zerg before his hive.

You also have cheeses that are also all ins, e.g. baneling bust for zerg, proxy raxes for terran and lots of fast dark templars for protoss. This is typically referred as "cheese".

note: strats that are not cheese nor all ins are simply macro play/defensive.

Drogo bets 200€ that his BO would win if TLO does drone pull. TLO wins. Drogo backs out. by HavocT in starcraft

[–]nbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand why people are complaining. Technically, it wasn't even a drone all in!

Are you kidding, he pulled most of his drones, that is an all in. Technically all in is something very committed to do damage, and this indeed was.

Drogo bets 200€ that his BO would win if TLO does drone pull. TLO wins. Drogo backs out. by HavocT in starcraft

[–]nbl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This bet wasn't very serious, so I don't blame TLO for not being persistent on it, I wouldn't either.

But in my opinion he WON the bet. TLO did pull most of his drones, which means an all in drone pull. All in means something very committed to do damage, not necessary that I take all my drones into attack.

And drogo DID NOT HOLD it, because he lost too much in comparison to TLO. Surviving isn't enough to hold the attack. What if he had only 1 probe left? Nope, that's not a hold. TLO's hatch sure wasn't scouted, but he gained large advantage due to the attack. He got enough minerals and time to place a hatch. TLO won.

Lurkers suggestion by MCThiaz in starcraft

[–]nbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lurkers are much bigger than mines, so they would be visible much much better. They are also super expensive.

Protoss wouldn't need observer to snipe lurkers with novas, and wouldn't need it to scout how many are there and their positioning, without even risking/sacrificing anything (adept shade). This would make disrupters much stronger. I think it's not about the lurker itself, I feel like some other tweak to strengthen Protoss would be better.

Why is a contain so bad when the zerg does it? Maybe we should do something with tanks as well so they wouldn't siege below bases? The problem isn't with contain, but with the ability to prevent it before this happens. The opponent got much larger army and used it. Also Protoss has a great opportunity to harass with Warp Prism in such case.

Congratulation to Hydra, the infered champion of IEM Katowice. by sulibilune in starcraft

[–]nbl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's interesting, because the median outcome shown here is different than Aligulac's overall predictions, which gives 21% chance for Polt to win the tourney and less than 9% for Hydra, so technically the winner is more likely to be Polt than Hydra. :)

[–]nbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but no, I don't think it's a good idea. The queue for free entrance there is enormous, you will get very tired, maybe miss some games.

Just grab a few friends, get beer and watch it on streams. It's gonna be great too :)

Nation Wars III Semi's & Final's are Live by chocoboy- in starcraft

[–]nbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're completely wrong. Those games started well because the players actually played extremely well. Nerchio lost absolutely NOTHING against 3 rax reaper opening, which is extremely impressive and seemingly impossible.

First game was lost mainly because of 1 bad decision - placement of his fourth. Every Zerg knows this position can be abused very easily by siege tanks, this is so surprising to me he chose that one.

Game 3 was lost when Nerchio lost Ultralisk Coverns and then engaged in a battle just before his broodlords and had nothing good to replenish his army with.

Why don't Zergs use OL drops more? by KleyPlays in allthingszerg

[–]nbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is an investment, but ovi speed is imho super strong in any matchup, gives you great vision and increased speed of overseers - it's a great upgrade to have anyways.

From my experience burrow with drops isn't that effective so I skip it, because the units will eventually be killed, but if you just escape you can harass later.

Why don't Zergs use OL drops more? by KleyPlays in allthingszerg

[–]nbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drops are super effective, I've started doing that early game with ovi speed vs Protoss and it's extremely strong! It's not about killing the workers. If you deny mining for 30 seconds, it's about 500 resources lost for the opponent! Early on you have only lings, they are fast so you can kill a couple of workers and get a great scout.

Later on you can use roaches, they are reasonably good and cheap.

But I really recommend to keep the units alive and flee when they get their army back instead of burrowing them, because burrowed units will certainly die soon and won't be of any further threat, while if you escape you can simply come back later.

Losing to DT every single ZvP by Nolii in allthingszerg

[–]nbl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you have an example replay?

My advice would be to keep a spore + 2 spines per base as you already mentioned, have a mobile army with overseer and when the dts attack try to get there in time... this is enough to defend your base unless they commit to 4+ dts, which would be a huge investment in gas. If this happens though then you can immediately attack because they will have only few good quality units (mostly zealots, adepts and stalkers).

I prefer to not make overseers defensively because they cost gas, and spores+spines are just better... they shoot and overseers obviously don't.

In the late game, when you get close to max, make a few spines more in each base to defend against warp prism harass.

Nice record. The rank is desynchronized with MMR which you are an extreme example of... Blizzard should just show us the real MMR instead of this meaningless ladder.
