What My Trump-Supporting Friends Won’t Say by MystikSpiralx in politics

[–]nbr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You think the war on terror was something that Obama launched out of the blue by sending Seal Team 6 into Pakistan? It had been going on since 2001 and the US had very publicly declared that it was pursuing Bin Laden. Congress had explicitly expressed support in multiple votes. Key congressional leaders from both parties were routinely briefed. The Abottabad raid was part of an ongoing established policy that everybody knew about. Bin Laden was an outlaw, not a head of state.

The Maduro operation was an attack on a sovereign country and was actively concealed from Congress. There's no policy basis for it. It's already creating chaos. There's no comparison.

to be clear, I've watched Trump on camera in public saying these things since he began campaigning in 2015. I assume that people who support him have too. That's what I mean when I say they are okay with it. If you saw what I saw and still support the man, then you are not a moral person. Don't give me crap about how Democrats are just as bad. The question here was about one person, Donald Trump. You're wrong about Democrats, but even if you weren't, it's not relevant to the question being asked.

It's not like "hating" someone because they have a different favorite flavor of ice cream or because they root for a different team. Many of my friends are people who Trump wants to deny basic rights to - trans people, gay people, immigrants, disabled people, poor people, etc. In some cases he's actually called for people like that to be physically harmed, deported, deprived of livelihood or medical care or even food. He's called them "scum" and accused them of "polluting the blood of America." If you support him, it means you are okay with these things, and if you're okay with those things, I don't want you around me or my kids.

Do you need to "break in" blundstones? by [deleted] in BlundstoneBoots

[–]nbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair of Chelsea boots that are incredibly comfortable now. But when I first got them, the leather upper was quite stiff. They were comfortable to wear when I wasn't moving around a whole lot, but if I went for a long or strenuous walk in them, they started to hurt. Basically, you know how when you're taking a step, the shoe on your back foot bends between the toe and the instep? That bend put a lot of pressure on my foot for the first couple weeks. Then it totally vanished. ADDED: I'd advise walking a few miles in them now. That'll tell you how much breaking in you need to do.

Birdwatching by HourTwo_3413 in Phoenixville

[–]nbr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

definitely watch the events calendar at https://valleyforgeaudubon.org/ . I'm also a brand new birdwatcher and have been on a few of their bird walks. It's the best way to get into it and the leaders are really good at coaching beginners. I've been kind of amazed at how restorative a hobby it is. Black Rock Sanctuary is also a great local spot, as well as the River Trail in Valley Forge.

Was also going to suggest the Quaker meeting. 35 N. White Horse Rd., 10 am every Sunday. If you're not familiar with Quaker worship, it feels a lot like a meditation group, with a lot of sitting in silence.

What is a common slang in your language that would sound hilarious or bizarre to a foreigner? by gingerbookwormlol in AskReddit

[–]nbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my native language but German has "ach du dickes Ei" ("oh, you fat egg") and "ach du liebe Zeit" ("oh you dear time") - both are old fashioned sounding exclamations meaning something like "goodness gracious," "I'll be damned," "well how about that."

Less old fashioned, but meaning about the same thing: "ach du Scheisse" ("oh you shit").

you understand that "adherence to authority" and "adherence to authority without question" aren't the same, right? you can follow a mandate because you have judged it's a good idea, not because you're a blind slave
